In Bless Me, Ultima by Rudalfo Anaya, the main character, Antonio, is a child that gains his maturity very quickly. At the age of seven Tony goes through a traumatic experience of seeing a neighborhood friend, Lupito, get killed. The most horrifying part for Tony was when Lupito said,“‘Bless me--’ I thought he cried, and the second volley of shots from the bridge sounded...” (22). Those two words had a major impact on Tony since it reminded him about his mother’s wish for him to become a priest.
