Crèvecur stated in Letters from an American Farmer the theme quite clearly in the first paragraph saying that European civilization makes up the American frontier for great hopes to bring back or regenerate the humanity and society of the American environment. As a lieutenant and a great surveyor during the French and Indian War Crèvecur moved to America and started observing the emergence of American society through cultivating farms. The main reason Europeans came to America was because the rich and the poor are not so far removed from each other as they are in Europe. He uses many literary devices such as rhetorical questions to set you up to think about the question. “By what invisible power has this surprising metamorphosis been performed?” he sets this question up as he is talking about the change in the American system during and after the American Revolution. He also uses a few metaphors such as in the first paragraph he uses a long metaphor comparing England to a wilting, withering, water deprived vegetation field then says that America is like the flourishing water filled field of vegetation. He uses anaphora several times in the letter also to show emphasis on what he is describing such as in the above quote where he talks about the family of very diversified people he says whose before every new person such as, “...whose wife was dutch, whose son married a french woman, and whose present…” this shows the diversity as he repeats the same “whose” to show repetition and flow. He also uses a few Biblical or religious references such to compare the King of England to a religious person or to compare America to a religious place. “Americans are the western pilgrims, who are carrying along with them that great mass of arts, sciences,vigor and industry which began long since in the east: they will finish the great circle.” this is a religious reference to Mecca as America is the new place to go for religious freedom.
