Fuller distinguishes Brown and his European equivalent from all other writing. She illustrates how the quality of his writing and ideas is far beyond anything anyone else has done. Her work is a contribution to the general discussion on how American and European writers compare. The target audience is clearly literary scholars. The language and subject matter are complex enough that it would make it impossible for anyone in that period who isn’t highly educated to comprehend her message. It is also likely that only those who have been paying attention to or contributing to the discussion on Brown and other early gothic writer would read or understand it. She thoroughly describes his positive attributes and how others are not ready for his ideas. She also implies that those who aren’t like him are unintelligent. One organizational form Fuller uses is compare and contrast, but she focuses on compare. She discusses Brown’s and Godwin’s similarities as great writers. She also contrasts him with other lesser minds. Her tone throughout the essay is reverent. She believes that his work is so excellent that when he writes it is “for the mint of the world” (1). For the portion of the essay she proudly displays his perfection. During the second portion of the essay, she smugly continues to boast his attributes while disparage those who don’t appreciate him. Three tools Fuller uses are imagery, likening the author to successful others, and insulting those who disagree. Rich descriptions punctuate all of her critical arguments cementing themselves in the reader's mind. She says that Brown is equal to Godwin, the gold standard of European masters, to add credibility to her argument. She describes anyone who doesn’t appreciate his writing as foolish and doomed. This makes her opinion appear as the correct opinion
