When the Emperor was Divine is a novel written by Julie Otsuka which tells a story of a Japanese American family during the time of World War II. The novel exemplifies the typical life and actions of Japanese Americans of the time period. The novel is told from five different perspectives, the mother, the girl, the boy, the father, the boy and the girl. The chapters are described by the family members and it is expressed from a third person point of view. At first, the father is arrested by the FBI because of the suspicion as a spy from the government. Therefore, the mother has to take care of her two children. Endo refuses while the government asked to free her after filing a habeas corpus petition. Instead Endo came to decision wanting her case to address the entire issue of Japanese internment. Couple years later, the Supreme Court made the decision, but gave President Roosevelt the chance to begin camp closures before the announcement. A day after President Roosevelt made his announcement, the Supreme Court revealed its decision. Not until years later in 1987, where there was the Civil Rights Restoration Act, which is when the U.S. government address the wrongs that they have committed with their retribution was paying 20,000 dollars and an official apology for each surviving individual affected by the Executive Order 9066. The first remedy was not introduced in congress until 1983, until it was passed in 1988 due to a lack of funding and the decision of the Supreme Court in the 1940s. The civil liberties act of 1988 was signed by President Ronald Reagan on August 10, and the final authorized fund was used for reparations to
