Kudler Food’s aspires to move the direction of their current business model to the realm of e-commerce. In comparison to other organizations in the same business of providing specility foods, this is a smart business choice that would benefit the company immensely and substantially increase accessibility. Currently Kudler Food’s utilizes a website to bring the quality product they offer to a larger audience. The website currently is actually well constructed, though, the design is very basic. There is much room for improvement.

Implementing the attributes of an online store brings added benefits. Some these benefits include: * Allows people to carry out businesses without the barriers of time or distance. One can log on to the Internet at any point of time, be it day or night and purchase or sell anything one desires at a single click of the mouse. * The direct cost-of-sale for an order taken from a web site is lower than through traditional means (retail, paper based), as there is no human interaction during the on-line electronic purchase order process. Also, electronic selling virtually eliminates processing errors, as well as being faster and more convenient for the visitor. * Ecommerce is ideal for niche products. Customers for such products are usually few. But in the vast market place i.e. the Internet, even niche products could generate viable volumes. * Another important benefit of Ecommerce is that it is the cheapest means of doing business. * The day-to-day pressures of the marketplace have played their part in reducing the opportunities for companies to invest in improving their competitive position. A mature market, increased competitions have all reduced the amount of money available to invest. If the selling price cannot be increased and the manufactured cost cannot be decreased then the difference can be in the way the business is carried out. Ecommerce has provided the solution by decimating the costs, which are incurred. * From the buyer’s perspective also ecommerce offers a lot of tangible advantages. 1. Reduction in buyer’s sorting out time. 2. Better buyer descisions 3. Less time is spent in resolving invoice and order discrepancies. 4. Increased opportunities for buying alternative products. * The strategic benefit of making a business ‘ecommerce enabled’, is that it helps reduce the delivery time, labour cost and the cost incurred in the following areas: 5. Document preparation 6. Error detection and correction 7. Reconciliation 8. Mail preparation 9. Telephone calling 10. Credit card machines 11. Data entry 12. Overtime 13. Supervision expenses
(Ecommerce Benefits, 2007)

Some challenges are presented with the notion of moving to an online store. One of the main challenges stems from the issue of security. In today's world, credit card fraud seems to be everyone's concern. At the business owner level, this should be first and foremost. Many consumers are extremely reluctant to embrace the idea of purchasing merchandise online. Money can also be a factor when considering moving to an online store front.

Another factor to consider is compensation. There are a variety of specialty food vendors online as is. Top competitors would be specialty food shops such as igormet.com, Zabar’s, ChefShop.com, and Earthy Delights. The focus should be on differentiating Kudler Food’s from all the others. The process for this follows.

To have a fully operational online storefront some of the things required are, an online shopping cart program of some sort, it way to accept payment from credit card or debit card, a way to track inventory, a quick means of navigation between product and the shopping, etc. The most important of this process is actually the shopping cart and checkout procedures. Both of these functionalities are what make the consumer shopping experience.

The current Kudler Food’s e-commerce prototype site is just the foundation for what's to come in the next 4 to 6 months. The first major milestone was the implementation of the basic shopping cart functionality. The next major milestone will be utilization of the current marquee in use on the current website, which we expect to see next week. A flash media video of the owner, Kathy Kudler delivering the mission statement of the business is scheduled to be filmed April 20th, 2012 and embedded on to the site within a two week time frame.

Let's take a closer look at what has gone into the current prototype. Web page development is an always evolving discipline. As soon as a particular language becomes common place, it is replaced by a new one that increases performance and usability. The prototype web page design for Kudler Fine Foods, though not a final design, and certainly not an expert design, includes some popular styling methods and mark up languages. The most common web languages, including HTML, XHTML, Javascript, and CSS are important inclusions to any web page. Administration at Kudler Fine Foods required a “shopping cart” or “add to cart” function added to their already sharply designed site. They also needed ways to improve the search engine optimization through metadata.

Extensible hypertext markup language, or XHTML is based on the previous HTML and allows developers to create their own tags and have more control over the creative design. Though XHTML provides an advantage over HTML in control, browsers are very picky about XHTML code syntax, and it needs to be utterly perfect to run error free. XHTML use in the prototype was limited for that reason, though XHTML tags are used in the page headings.

Google Chrome is now the most widely used web browser in the world, and it was used as the default browser for testing the prototype. Google chrome displays the page as it is intended to be. The background colors are all accurate and the color shifts with the CSS are accurate as well. When the page is opened with Internet Explorer, the background displays in the color for background from the CSS. Google chrome uses the HTML background color and not the CSS background color. This is most likely an error in the coding, particularly in the CSS, where Google Chrome is detecting an error that Internet Explorer is not picking up on. Other than the background colors, all other functions and aesthetics are the same for both browsers. The CSS function as intended in both browsers, and the shopping cart function works accurately. Cascading style sheets are an excellent formatting tool. They allow developers to carry a standard format throughout multiple pages on a site, without having to use HTML tables to form the layout of each page, one at a time. The primary use for cascading style sheets in the prototype are for formatting the main menu on the home page. Style sheets align the menu options and allow for color changing functions when the cursor is dragged over the selections. CSS were used for forming the margins, centering the text, font size, font color and the color changing function on the menu options. These are very basic uses of CSS, but CSS make the whole formatting process much easier and quicker. The design process for the prototype site was multi-staged. The team developed a site model, developed code, tested it during each step, and tested it as a finished prototype. The project involved collaboration between team member, increasing the creative element and adding critical evaluation. The design, though very simple, is user friendly and clearly illustrates the design modifications that Kudler administration requested in the prototype. The prototype uses current, up to date technology like cascading style sheets. The site uses well-written and grammatically correct text and easy to use menu options. Metadata is also included in the home page to optimize the site for search engines. Metadata has become an integral part of search engine optimization, the process of improving a site’s likelihood of being highly ranked in a search engine. Metadata gives information about the site, like a short description and key words, to the browser and search engine, but it is not displayed in the browser. This information is used for indexing when a search is requested. The meta tags included in the code help search engines find the site based on the description and key words. Unique characteristics about Kudler Fine Foods are included in the metadata. The premium products they offer are promoted in the meta tags that may set the site apart from other competitive companies and sites. At this point in the web design world, not including metadata and meta tags gives a site an instant disadvantage. It is basic site upkeep and optimization to use meta tags.

With the utilization of the processes and web development tactics listed throughout this document, Kudler Food’s transition to the e-commerce world should be smooth. The potential for added an added customer base is very large and for the new customer experience that the regular’s will have just compounds it.

...Kudler Fine Food's Frequent Shopper Program BSA310 Kudler Fine Food's Frequent Shopper Program Kudler Fine Foods, a “fine” grocery store based in San Diego, is looking to implement a frequent shopper program. This program is to enhance their current database that tracks sales and performs low-level data analysis, the kind most current stores use to keep inventory current. The program is set to provide a more detailed analysis of shopper’s spending habits at an individual level, which brings in a number of ethical, legal, and information security concerns. This paper is to discuss these concerns, what the company can do to protect such sensitive information, and what potential legal issues that may be faced implementing this system. Ethical Concerns This, above all else, should be the first consideration when implementing a system like this. For a system like this to work, customers will have many attributes of their lives revealed through deep analysis of their spending habits. Most people will be uncomfortable with such a notion, so the program cannot be mandatory. This must be left to the customer to choose to participate or not. If customers do opt in to the program, everything the company plans to do with their info should be laid out for them to know right up front. Especially when it comes to sharing sensitive information with other companies, customers may trust Kudler, more than likely they will not trust other companies that do business with Kudler.
