2 The lexical characteristics of English Sports News
2.1 Using brief and expressive vocabulary
One of the distinguishing features of English sports news is using brief and expressive vocabulary (powerful word). Contrary to the long, complex words, the sports news prefers to use short, specific vocabulary. Especially, the headlines of the news are much more prefer the brief and the expressive vocabulary. Following is a sports news from Xinhua English website: . Here, we see a China Daily from the English website:
Chinas Gao wins women's pole vault title(Xinhua)Updated:2006-12-13 09:01
Chinese Gao Shuying excelled to bag the women's pole vault crown at the Asian Games athletics finals here on Tuesday. The Asian record holder,27,beat the first two heights of 3.80 and 4.00 meters and then cleared 4.30 meters on her first attempt of the height for the title, while the eventual silver medalist Samsu Roslinda of Malaysia followed to failthe 4.40 height.Japan’s Ikuko Nishikori and Chinese ZhaoYingying shared the bronze medal in 4.15 meters.
We could calculate that there are totally 104 words and most of them are very short and have specific meaning. Using this vocabulary helps to quickly access and understand information.
2.2 High frequency use of “acronym”
The acronym are used in a lot of sports news, in order to save the paper, quick to seize the reader's attention. There for the news reports require to convey as much information as possible in the limited space. Therefore, acronyms become an important character in English sports news. For example: FIFA(Federation
International Football Association), IAAF(International Association of Athletics Federations),CTA(Chinese Tennis Association), CIsS(International Committee of Silent Sports);NASL(North American Soccer League), and so on.
2.3 The high frequency appearance of terminology
The words which concerned with sports figures, events, time, place of the English sports news could be seen everywhere, and the terminology of the sports stars, sports events could be seen in the English sports news. We have listed a lot of sports institutions and events in the last paragraph; now let’s see some more examples:
a) China defeated defending champion South Korea on Tuesday to be crowned in the badminton men's team event at the 15th Doha Asian Games.
b) Defending champions China won a final rematch over South Korea at the Asian Games in Doha on Sunday to claim their seventh AsianGames men's table tennis team title.
We could find names of people, countries, places and events in the above news. There’re 32 words in paragraph a, and there’re 12 terminologies in this paragraph. There’re 29 words in paragraph b, and there’re 15 terminologies in this paragraph. We could find out the high frequency of the terminology.
2.4 Accurately use of figure
There are so many kinds of sports games and all the games are different. Some games compete speed, some games compete distance, some games compete degree of difficulty or quality of execution or performance, and so on. Generally, every kind of sports needs to use a specific figure to represent the process or results. On the other hands, the figure could also measure the value of the news. Therefore, the figures in the sports news should be accurate. For example, in a 160 words sports news in page97-98 of “A Textbook of English-Chinese Translation”, there’re 25 figures describing the scores and rankings, and there’re 24 figures in another sports news in page 99 in this book. All the examples could show that the figures are very important to the sports news.
2.5 Extensive use of synonyms
In order to avoid repeating, to make the sentence vivid and add interests to the reports, the synonyms are extensively used in the English sports news. There’re many kinds of narrative style and vivid words in English, and they are extensively used in the sports news. For example, it would use conquer, overcome, outclass, outplay, down, oust, crush, knock off, triumph over, prevail over in the news to express the meaning of victory.
3. Conclusion
Generally speaking, the English sports news should not only transfer information, but also should quickly grasp the attention of the readers. All the words must be brief, accurate, specific and expressive. The sports news has its typical style and features. We could find that short words, terminology, acronyms are extensively used in the sports news, and the digital in the reports must be accurate. Through understanding the characters of the English sports news could help us to better understand and learn the sports news and to fully appreciate the splendid sports events.

...syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and practical application provides a sound basis for the study of translation as a professional activity. Mona Baker is Chairman of the...

Translation and Gende

...In recent years, a considerable volume of academic literature and researches in the field of translation are being focused on the concept of gender in translation (e.g. von Flotow 2001, Simon 1996, and Chamberlain 1998). According to Chamberlain (1998: 96), “the issues relating to gender in the practice of translation are myriad, varying widely according to the type of text being translated, the language involved, cultural practices and countless other factors”. Von Flotow (2001) offers a comprehensive overview of research areas in which the issue of “gender and translation” could be investigated: - Historical studies (who translated what when and how, and how did gender play into this?) - Theoretical considerations (how do different gender affiliations, definitions, constructions play themselves out in translation and translation research?) - Issues of identity (how does gendered identity or a lack of it affect translation, translation research?) - Post-colonial questions (does our largely Anglo-American "gender" apply in other cultures and their texts? Does it translate into other languages? And what does it mean if it doesn’t?) - More general questions of cultural transfer (is the current government-supported export of Canadian women’s writing, a hot commodity in some literary markets, really about Canadian tolerance and egalitarianism?) Whereas most of researches done regarding gender in translation have dealt specifically with the issue of the translators’ gender...

Linguistics

...of linguistics include sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, comparative linguistics, and structural linguistics. Discourse[edit] A discourse is a way of speaking that emerges within a certain social setting and is based on a certain subject matter. A particular discourse becomes a language variety when it is used in this way for a particular purpose, and is referred to as a register.[25] There may be certain lexical additions (new words) that are brought into play because of the expertise of the community of people within a certain domain of specialisation. Registers and discourses therefore differentiate themselves through the use of vocabulary, and at times through the use of style too. People in the medical fraternity, for example, may use some medical terminology in their communication that is specialised to the field of medicine. This is often referred to as being part of the "medical discourse", and so on. Dialect[edit] A dialect is a variety of language that is characteristic of a particular group among the language speakers.[26] The group of people who are the speakers of a dialect are usually bound to each other by social identity. This is what differentiates a dialect from a register or adiscourse, where in the latter case, cultural identity does not always play a role. Dialects are speech varieties that have their own grammatical and phonological rules, linguistic features, and stylistic aspects, but have not been given...

The Media

...The media Anne O’Keeffe Historical overview of media discourse ‘The media’ is a very broad term, encompassing print and broadcast genres, that is anything from newspaper to chat show and, latterly, much more besides, as new media emerge in line with technological leaps. The study of ‘the media’ comes under the remit of media studies from perspectives such as their production and consumption, as well as their aesthetic form. The academic area of media studies cuts across a number of disciplines including communication, sociology, political science, cultural studies, philosophy and rhetoric, to name but a handful. Meanwhile, the object of study, ‘the media’, is an ever-changing and ever-growing entity. The study of ‘the media’ also comes under the radar of applied linguistics because at the core of these media is language, communication and the making of meaning, which is obviously of great interest to linguists. As Fairclough (1995a: 2) points out, the substantively linguistic and discoursal nature of the power of the media is a strong argument for analysing the mass media linguistically. Central to the connection between media studies and studies of the language used in the media (media discourse studies) is the importance placed on ideology. A major force behind the study of ideology in the media is Stuart Hall (see, for example, Hall 1973, 1977, 1980, 1982). Hall (1982), in his influential paper, notes that the study of media (or ‘mass communication’) has had...

To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language. Yule’s crisp and thought-provoking presentation of key issues works well for a wide range of students.” Elise Morse-Gagne, Tougaloo College “The Study of Language is one of the most accessible and entertaining introductions to linguistics available. Newly updated with a wealth of material for practice and discussion, it will continue to inspire new generations of students.” Stephen Matthews, University of Hong Kong ‘Its strength is in providing a general...
