Analysis Of Lieutenant Theodore Robitaille's Song O Canada

In 1880, Lieutenant Theodore Robitaille commissioned the song “O Canada” to be used during the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony. While the music was composed by Calixa Lavallee, the words were written by the judge, and poet, Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Originally, the lyrics for this song were in French. In 1906 an English version was created. While the official English version is the most popular, it is not the literal translation of the French version. While the French version remains unaltered, the English version has been revised twice in order to take the present form in 1980. In 1980, "O Canada" became Canada's official national anthem.
