Analysis Of The Article 'Hidden Figures' Behind The Space Race

To start with, Jazzy B promoted music in Evertown by playing in local churches and by teaching music to kids who cannot go to school because they are stuck in poverty. It seems that all of Jazzy B’s hard work ethics were all forgotten. This is similar to the people who were in the space race to prove their passion about space. In “Hidden Figures “Behind the Space Race, it depicts that people at that time thought women were not capable of doing (STEM) activities. As the article was saying about the American setting foot on the moon, “...women are still underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. This illustrates that there was a lot of discrimination, not only race but gender discrimination as well, and people

...by McDonald and James Harder while testifying before the Congressional Committee on Science and Astronautics, in July 1968.[3] Skeptic Philip J. Klass used it in his 1968 book UFOs--Identified.  In 1969 physicist Edward Condon defined the "Extra-terrestrial Hypothesis" or "ETH" as the "idea that some UFOs may be spacecraft sent to Earth from another civilization or space other than earth, or on a planet associated with a more distant star," while presenting the findings of the much debated Condon Report. Some UFO historians credit Condon with popularizing the term and its abbreviation "ETH". Chronology Although ETH, as a unified and named hypothesis, is a comparatively new concept - one which owes a lot to the saucer sightings of the 1940s–1960s, it can trace its origins back to a number of earlier events such as the now discredited Martian canals and ancient Martian civilization promoted by astronomer Percival Lowell, popular culture including the writings of H. G. Wells and fellow science fiction pioneers such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, who likewise wrote of Martian civilizations, and even to the works of figures such as the Swedish philosopher, mystic and scientist Emanuel Swedenborg, who promoted a variety of...

Social Media Technologies and Brand Loyalty

...Social Media Technologies and Brand Loyalty | Abhishek Srivastava | Social Media Technologies and Brand Loyalty | Abhishek Srivastava Executive Summary The study deals with finding relation between social media technology and brand loyalty. Nature of the research is secondary. First the sudden explosion of data has been encountered in early sections. Various seminal research papers are undertaken as a part of the literature study, all of which point to one general trend, i.e. of rise of power in the hands of the consumer. Examples of various companies are cited which have embraced this change in the paradigm shift and have emerged on the top. Concept of “Brand Community” has also been discussed at length which is nothing but an entire ecological system that springs about a particular brand. Various models and frameworks have been suggested, some of which are Social Media Strategy Framework and various conceptual frameworks to substantiate the literature. As far as key findings are concerned, the most important is letting the customer adopt a more active role as against to a passive role. One of the ways in which this could be achieved by providing a free environment which encourages discussions and not to erect silos within an organisation. Many studies across the country such as that of Revlon India and Shoppers Stop is analysed. Case studies of Dr. Pepper and Nike are also presented to bring home the point of letting customers become collaborators. ...

Robotics

...Control Laboratory The Robotics Institute -- School of Computer Science -- Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-3891 ABSTRACT Aircraft flight pressurization/depressurization cycling causes the skin to inflate and deflate, stressing it around the rivets that fasten it to the airframe. The resulting strain, exacerbated by corrosion, drives the growth of initially microscopic cracks. To avoid catastrophe, aircraft are inspected periodically for cracks and corrosion. The inspection technology employed is ~90% naked-eye vision. We have developed and demonstrated robotic deployment of both remote enhanced 3D-stereoscopic video instrumentation for visual inspection and remote eddy current probes for instrumented inspection. This article describes the aircraft skin inspection application, how robotic deployment may alleviate human performance problems and workplace hazards during inspection, practical robotic deployment systems, their instrumentation packages, and our progress toward developing image enhancement and understanding techniques that could help aircraft inspectors to find cracks, corrosion, and other visually detectable damage. KEYWORDS: automated robot visual NDI inspection enhanced remote stereoscopic multiresolution 1. INTRODUCTION Pressurization and de-pressurization of an airplane during each takeoff and landing cycle causes its body to expand and contract like an inflating and deflating balloon. Cycling thus induces stress fatigue at the rivets that hold...

Often gender and sex are used interchangeably, but gender is socially constructed and sex is biologically determined. The word gender has been used since the 14th century but this did not become common until the mid of 20th century. In human societies sex differences are experienced as gender differences. Concepts of gender are cultural interpretations of sex differences. Gender is related to sex differences. Gender depends on how society views relationship of male to man and female to woman. Every culture has prevailing images of what men and women are ―supposed‖ to be like. The concept of an ideal...

Lean & Six Sigma

...Introduction In race to be a leader, most companies are realizing that traditional management, manufacturing processes, and other orthodox approaches, are not enough. More effective methods are needed: • Lean Manufacturing • Six Sigma Lean “Lean is a way to specify value, line up value-creating actions in the best sequence, conduct those activities without interruption whenever someone requests them, and perform them more and more effectively. In short, lean thinking is lean because it provides a way to do more and more with less and less – less human effort, less human equipment, less time, and less space – while coming closer and closer to providing customers with exactly what they want.”- Womack and Jones (1996). “Becoming ‘lean’ is a process of eliminating waste with the goal of creating value.” – Womack & Jones There are FIVE overriding principles to Lean. Identify Customers and Specify Value - The starting point is to recognise that only a small fraction of the total time and effort in any organisation actually adds value for the end customer. By clearly defining Value for a specific product or service from the end customer’s perspective, all the non value activities - or waste - can be targeted for removal. Identify and Map the Value Stream – The Value Stream is the entire set of activities across all parts of the organisation involved in jointly delivering the product or service. This represents the end-to-end process that delivers the value to the...

Walter Benjamin

...Transcribed: by Andy Blunden 1998; proofed and corrected Feb. 2005. ________________________________________ “Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. For the last twenty years neither matter nor space nor time has been what it was from time immemorial. We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing \change in our very notion of art.” Paul Valéry, Pièces sur L’Art, 1931 Le Conquete de l’ubiquite Preface When Marx undertook his critique of the capitalistic mode of production, this mode was in its infancy. Marx directed his efforts in such a way as to give them prognostic value. He went back to the basic conditions underlying capitalistic production and through his presentation showed what could be expected of capitalism in the future. The result was that one could expect it not only to exploit the proletariat with increasing...
