Cisneros heavily relies on descriptive language throughout her essay to convey her message. She says that the only literature that her father reads is “the brown-ink Esto sports magazines” and “the bloody ¡Alarma! Magazines” containing “wife’s revenge… basing his skull” (7). Through this imagery, she clearly portrays her father as a man who is not accustomed to reading serious material. Therefore, she does not receive the support she desires about becoming a writer.
