...performance of the presentation team: ■ The value of supplemental readings ■ Quality and content of the concept lecture ■ Quality of the case analysis ■ Strength of the case recommendation ■ Presentation and communication skill Value of Supplement Readings The analysis team recommended the following additional readings: Chapter 8 of Brigham/Ehrhardt’s “Financial Management” textbook, Burton Malkiel’s “Reflections of the Efficient Market Hypothesis: 30 Years Later”, and Malkiel’s “Passive Investment Strategies and Efficient Markets”. All three recommendations are excellent sources for basic and advanced understanding of the case’s key financial concepts. “EMH: 30 Years Later”, especially, is a terrific read providing the original EMH founder’s thoughts on the theory’s relevancy even in today’s financial world. We also would like to recommend two academic papers that offer inquisitive views of EMH and its potential fallacies. Both works - Daniel Kahneman’s Nobel prize work “Maps of Bounded Rationality” and Lawrence, McCabe, and Prakash’s “Answering Financial Anomalies: Sentiment-Based Stock Pricing” - explore the realms of behavior finance. By questioning the assumption of rational behavior in investors, a pillar of EMH, they present an opposing argument unanswered by the efficient market hypothesis. While not largely pertinent to the case, an eager mind may be engaged by the divergent point of view. Quality and Content of the Concept Lecture The content of the lecture...

...his case follows the performance-review and financial-statement-forecasting decisions of a Value Line analyst for the retail-building-supply industry in October 2002. The case contrasts the strong operating performance of Home Depot with the strong stock-market performance of Lowe's. Students examine a financial-ratio analysis for Home Depot that acts as a template for generating a comparable ratio analysis for Lowe's. The student ratio analysis is designed to build intuition with respect to interpreting individual ratios as well as ratio interrelationships (e.g., the DuPont framework). The historical-performance comparison suggests that investors are skeptical of the ability of Home Depot to maintain its performance trajectory, yet they project sustained improvements for Lowe's. Students are invited to scrutinize the analyst's five-year income-statement and asset-side balance-sheet forecast for Home Depot. The case expressly focuses on the asset side of the balance sheet as a preview for other cases using free-cash-flow forecasting. The Home Depot forecast exercise exposes students to the mechanics of financial-statement modeling and sensitivity analysis, which they can use in building their own forecast for Lowe's. Finally, the strong-growth assumptions for Home Depot relative to the modest-growth forecast for the industry suggest that the company can be expected to capture massive and perhaps unreasonable market share in the near term. The exercise provides a striking example...

...existing project. Currently, as practically in every industry there is a huge competition, so must be carry out a market analysis before proceeding to any movement. The analysis must be conducted in a fair manner and give to meaningful results that will take the right decision for the future. Many schools give a lot of methods of market analysis. In addition to the well-known SWAT and PEST analysis, there are many other approaches such as Value Chain Analysis, Porters Five forces, Core Competencies and Stakeholder Mapping that may be useful. This work will present two approaches of strategic analysis process such as Value Chain Management and Potters Five Forces. Those two methods seem to be the most authoritative and covering the largest range methods. The information and conclusions drawn from them give a clear view of the situation in which the company is located and whether the plans for the future have any chance of entry into force and to bring relevant results. The first section presents the method of analysis of the value chain, its advantages and disadvantages, and presented examples of its application in practice, as typified by several companies. In the next part in a similar manner presented the advantages and disadvantages of the Potters five forces, also supported by examples of application. Finally, a brief summary is presented. 2. ...of importance of political structures and market forces in economic development. This dynamic serves as one of the basic foundations of the discipline itself as well as subsequent major schools of thought. Theories in International Economy have been founded on empirical observations on the economic conditions of a set of cases and are, as Robert Cox posits, critical of the circumstances from which certain politico-economic configurations emerge[1]. A contemporary theory that has surfaced in the last few decades is the developmental state theory which sought to explain the precipitous economic progress of East Asian states after the Second World War. Although the initial outcome of adopting developmental strategies among East Asian states have shown the theory’s potency as a basis for economic development policies, subsequent events especially the results of Southeast Asian attempts to pattern itself after developmental strategies have put into question the developmental state’s efficacy as a long-term arrangement. Specifically, the Philippines’ status as an “anti-developmental” state[2] serves as a channel for criticism of the developmental state theory through other IPE theories not only in terms of strategies and policies, but also in the deeper level of societal conflict and political structures. The origins of the Developmental State and its basic premises The literature on developmental state theory attributes its conception to Chalmers Johnson who argued...

...Southwest Airlines Case Study Jared G. Sanders BUSN412 Business Policy April 1, 2012 SOUTHWEST AIRLINES WWW.SOUTHWEST.COM AIRLINE INDUSTRY BACKGROUND /HISTORY/ COMPANY TIMELINE: Southwest, founded by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher, began as a small Texan airline almost 35 years ago and has grown to become one of the largest airlines in America. It was created on the following premise: “If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline!” (www.southwest.com). Today Southwest Airlines flies more than 70 million passengers a year to 60 great cities all across the country, and they do it more than 3,000 times a day. They have 436 of the newest jets in the nation, with each plane being an average age of 9 years. (www.southwest.com). Southwest’s combination of low fares, outstanding customer service, and strong leadership have helped the airline remain profitable even in the midst of tragedies like the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. SWOT ANALYSIS: Southwest was set up for success from the beginning because of its unique upside-down organizational structure. Upper management is at the bottom and supports the front line employees, who are the real experts. Kelleher’s unorthodox leadership style, in which everyone in the company makes management decisions, is largely unheard of these days. The company doesn’t...

In this course, we will go through various theories, strategic tools and cases to understand how this type of analysis can be conducted effectively. More generally, the focus of this course is on strategic management - the process of choosing and defining purposes and objectives, formulating a strategy and implementing it. The course aims to develop your ability to see an organization as a whole and to understand how and why the various functions of a business are interdependent and need to be coordinated. Hence, the thrust of the course is the organization in its totality - the environment in which it operates, its strategy and how this strategy builds on the firm’s internal administrative activities. The emphasis is on the kinds of problems...
