...Movie Review and Analysis Paper Kaitlin McFarland Sociology 201-001 Mrs. Cole July 28, 2015 Abstract As you review this paper, you will find an overview of the movie “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls” with specifics on the issues that were presented from a wide variety of sources and countries. You will also find explanations about the various social problems that were highlighted in the movie, and I will give you insight into my personal opinions about the movie and how it affected me and impacted my outlook on the subjects presented in the movie. Movie Review During our class time, we reviewed an inspirational movie called “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls.” This film is a documentary of modern day sex trafficking and slavery. Though out the movie the movie producers and directors travel to 19 countries that are centers for major sex trafficking including, Cambodia, Thailand, Moldova, Las Vegas and Amsterdam’s Red Light District with most of the women being sold coming from the Eastern European areas. This documentary goes beyond the black and white facts about the sex trafficking industry and how it works. They go beyond the factor of just poverty and how it meshes with prostitution and sex trafficking; it informs the audience of the law in different areas of the world. For example, prostitution is a legal act in Amsterdam. During the film the movie producers and directors take a trip down the Red Light District and film many girls standing in windows making...

...In the film, Don't Look Back, the documentary starring Bob Dylan, we see both the dark and enlightening sides of Bob Dylan. throughout the film it’s clear that Dylan has a level of comfort with the director, and as a result we are allowed into his personal life on and off stage. there are also a few moments of ambiguity and some highlights in the film that indirectly give us a sense of ageism, sexism and cultural values. The directors craft helps tie these together in a way that is appealing to the audience and can be drawn back to David R. Shumways’ of that era. First I’d like to analyze my impression of the film. Before the film I knew of Bob Dylan, his music, his legacy. I was under the impression that Dylan fell into the category of mellow pot smokers or “stoners” of the midsixties who were heavily involved in politics and current events. Then having heard a few of his songs, I thought, “wow this guy really wants the best for our society”. With that in mind, I also believed Bob Dylans personality would be sort of gentle and affectionate. Dont Look Back pretty much challenged all point of views. Dylan gets into a lot of conflict throughout the film. There are several moments, when we are unsure if Dylan is being civil or argumentative with people. Although, we do get a glimpse at Bob Dylans sensitive side, we are preoccupied by his radical actions throughout the film. The introduction to the documentary, is a flashback into Bob Dylan's career, showing his origins ...

...Vračević Željka University of Banjaluka Faculty of Philology English Language and Literature REPRESENTATIONS OF FEMININITY IN DISNEY CARTOON PRODUCTION: An Analysis of Selected Examples The purpose of this essay is to explore how media, especially Disney cartoons, affect gender, particularly young girls and how the representations of females within the media affect the viewers through stereotypes or ideals to live up too. THE INTRODUCTION (the explanation of media influences and basic notions of women representations in Disney Production) A good deal of feminist writing in the field of culture has been concerned with the representations of gender and of women in particular, and it is claimed that these representations of females reflected male attitudes and constituted misrepresentations of “real women”. Meehan (1983) analyzed the stereotypes into which women are commonly cast on television and the analysis showed that “good women” are, or are expected to be submissive, domesticated and home-centered while “bad women” are rebellious and independent. She concludes that “American viewers have spent more than three decades watching male heroes and their adventures, muddied visions of boyhood adolescence repete with illusions of women as witches, bitches, mothers and imps “. All researches about the media influence give the same conclusion that the mass media is a powerful resource through which viewers develop their...

...Rhetorical Analysis Michael Moore’s documentary “Bowling for Columbine,” was an eye opening look at violence and the causes of it in America. Before watching this film I was already aware that there is a problem in America when it comes to gun related violence and watching it helped to reiterate this fact to me. However, because of the overall confrontational style of this film and all of the facetious undertones implied by Michael Moore, the message it carries with it could have more of a negative than positive effect on the viewer, as it did on me. To start, I would like to focus on what was positive about the film. As a whole, the film focused most on connecting with the audience on an emotional level, the “Pathos” side of things. The most heart-wrenching and pitiful examples are the interviews of victims and those most personally affected by each gun related tragedy. The level of emotion expressed by each victim was enough to make any viewer feel a lump grow in his throat, the most poignant include a realtor choking on his words mid- sentence at the very mention of the Columbine Shooting (:23), live footage of children running and screaming in a cafeteria while listening to distressed 911 calls (:30-:32), and interviews with individuals and victims involved with each of the tragic events focused on, one being the Columbine shooting (:34), the other being the incident in Flint involving the death of a six year old girl (1:23-1:25). Every one of these interviews included...

...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily...

...INTRODUCTION This study is conducted to determine the physical image of women portrayed by Filipino beauty commercials. A feministic view of these commercials is applied in trying to show the ideal image they present which influences the decisions and perceptions of women. Specifically, the researchers are defining how it has shaped the outlook of women towards beauty with regards to the physical aspects. The methods used to achieve results were documentary analysis and interviews. Through interviews, the researchers were able to generate information based on perceptions of selected individuals with expertise on feminism and visual communication. The documentary analysis deals with the examination of sample commercials which are part of the research scope. CHAPTER I THE RESEARCH AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter contains the background of the study with a short introduction of the whole research and the reasons why the researchers chose the topic. It also contains the specific problems of the study as well as the theoretical and conceptual frameworks which were the foundation of the research. The limitations and scope are also provided in this chapter. It also contains the significance of the study to different people affected by the research and the definition of terms as to how they were used in the study. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY As people tend to watch television, we also tend to encounter the commercials that come along with watching. According to a study conducted...

...This journal entry is designed to help you document ideas about conflicts in literature, which will contribute to the information required for the Week Three Draft and the Week Five Literary Analysis. Recognizing conflict is essential to understanding the various commentaries literature can provide. In Journal One, you identified conflict as it might appear in our everyday world and from other sources. Now, consider the following definition of conflict and how it relates to literature from the textbook or the story/poetry links provided under the requirements for the Literary Analysis: Conflict is opposing actions, ideas, and decisions that hold a plot together...the struggle that shapes the plot in a story. Chapters 1-7 of our text contain a number of stories and poems, each of which rely on at least one conflict. Choose two of this week’s assigned literary works and write about the conflicts presented in each of them. In 250 to 500 words Individual versus Society --- “Still she had come down the road toward the big white church alone. Just herself, an old forgetful woman, nearly blind with age” (para 3.1,2) --- appears to be the main conflict in Alice Walker’s narrative ironically, yet metaphorically named "The Welcome Table”. The theme coming across is that of racism, correct me if I am wrong, with the imagery/ symbolism of “the big white church” versus the lone black Elder. This is the story of an elderly African-American woman, who on a winter night wonders into...

...Introduction What is cancer? Cancer is defined in so many different ways. The definition that sticks out to me is a malignant growth or tumor resulting from the division of abnormal cells. Cancer is one of the leading diseases in the killing of the human race. Cancer is a disease that has taken many lives over the years and will continue to do so until researchers find a cure. It is found that when diagnosed with any fatal disease it is difficult to deal with. Some people want to just give up and feel that all hope is gone and then you have those who will fight to beat the disease. This brings me to a strong will yet amazing person by the name of Farrah Fawcett. Farrah Fawcett childhood was filled with baseball and ballet. Her dad wanted a boy and her mother was determined for her to be a girly girl. Farrah attended the University of Texas majoring in Art. At the encouragement of a publicist in 1968 Farrah struck out to LA at which time she landed a role on several shows. She then met an actor by the name of Lee Majors after which they were married in 1973. Farrah Fawcett was a world renowned actress who was best known for her role in the TV series of Charlie’s Angels (1976). For over 30 years Farrah Fawcett had a rocky relationship with Ryan O’Neal her longtime boyfriend. Ryan was very abusive to Farrah during this relationship. In 2001 she and Ryan O’Neal reconnected. During this relationship they had a son by the name of Redmond. Farrah would do anything to...

...The beginning of the song starts off polyphonic with no lyrics. The beat keeps going back and forth as if something is moving. Later, we find out that a girl and a boy are actually in a moving train going anywhere in the middle of the night. Then, the lyrics stop and the electric guitar starts playing a fast and loud rhythm. This gives the listeners a chance of anticipation of what the young people will do next. Then, when the drums enter it gives an upbeat feeling that everything is going fine and the girl and boy are happily experiencing a new lifestyle. They meet each other in the streets and are hopeful to find their hidden identities. When the lyrics stop, the listeners imagine the boy and the girl trying to adjust to their new home. Later on, when the phrase “It goes on and on and on and on” is sung, the previous beat stops and then goes in sync with the word “on” followed by a fast couple beats by the drums. The steady beat signified a modulation because the key was changed afterwards. Then, the vocalists stop singing and the texture becomes really thick with the electric guitar and all the other instruments. This texture was used to build up the finale of the...

... On December 14th 2012, a fatal shooting occurred, the lives of twenty children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary school were taken within minutes. Though he does not deserve any attention, the man that took these innocent lives was named Adam Lanza and he was just twenty years old at the time of the shooting. The children of Sandy Hook Elementary school were only in the first grade, and their lives came to a tragic end. I chose to talk about this event because I think that it is important to remember these victims, who were not old enough to have any chance to defend themselves or hardly begin their lives. As well as the fact that in 2012 I was in high school, and had cousins in Elementary school, it was so frightening to me that something like this was possible. I think that its important to raise awareness to students that terrifying things can happen. But most importantly to keep the story of these children and women that gave their lives, alive. Background Information of the Event The Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting shook the small town of Newtown, Connecticut. At about 9:30 a.m. on December 14th in 2012 a 911 call was made that there was a possible shooter in the Elementary school. Just under three minutes later police responded to find that a tragedy had in fact already occurred. These deaths were at the hands of a twenty-year-old boy named Adam Lanza. On the day of the shooting prior to driving to Sandy Hook, Lanza also took the life of his mother, Nancy...

...The increased speculation is what lead to the second video apology which went out via Youtube. In which she employed new strategies. She recognizes right away that her first apology was not effective which was smart. Instead of digging a deeper hole she starts to spin the story in her favor by stating “I kind of missed my opportunity to sincerely apologize and express how I was feeling, because I was too busy preaching about my issues with the food industry. Which is not… I feel…relative.” The next strategy she uses is minimization and carries an attitude of this will be yesterday news. “I’d rather just apologize, and I feel like now’s my chance, before the whole thing blows over.” In this video she uses a ton of Mortification I still have doubts on how genuine it was. The realest part in my opinion was when she stated "Seeing a video of yourself behaving poorly, that you have no idea was taken, is such a rude awakening, that you don't know what to do -- I was so disgusted with myself.” While I do believe that statement is true I think it is more of apology where I am sorry I got caught but maybe I am not sincerely sorry for what I said. Other celebrities were also mad and turned to social media to voice their opinions. Rob Lowe for example and made the connection to her and the Dixie Chicks. The fact that she had a huge social media presences and chose Youtube as...

...Contributing Factors to Various Eating Disorders Introduction The proposed topic discussed throughout this research will be eating disorders, specifically on the contributions to various eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, athletica nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. Through much research, it is shown there are larger causes to these eating disorders. It is no longer a psychological factor (brain chemical misbalance). There are greater forces that influence eating disorders such as the mass media, family, stress (sense of identity), community (peers/school), and negative body image (which links to mass media). It is important to know these contributions to eating disorders because, the more one knows about the various factors for an eating disorder, the easier it will become to treat these disorders (help one suffering with an eating disorder cope and become healthier.) Throughout the 21st century, eating disorders have become more common among North American teens. With a higher percentage rate of eating disorders in the 21st century, (Sneddon, 1999, p.35) it shows it is an area that should have greater focus. Not only does it have a negative impact on the individual who is battling it, it has a negative impact on society; an impact that could destroy our society – mentally if we (as a community/society) do not help or treat this in the way it should be. An eating disorder can tear apart someone’s morals, eat at their brain – which means with it becoming more...

There are several substantial areas that you must consider in your analysis. The following questions will help you to begin your analysis of the ethical dilemma you have chosen. • What is the ethical dilemma and who are the individuals involved? Be sure to fully describe the dilemma and its context. • What are the main ethical concerns presented in the dilemma? What sources and references can you use to support your analysis? • How could you apply the theories and techniques of human service professions to a wide variety of ethical dilemmas? • What documentation would you provide for the Ethics committee if it were a real-life situation? What decision making process would you present to them upon review of this case? How would you define and relate the role and functions of ethical standards in scientific research in the human service professions? These questions are only meant to help you start your analysis.
