An article “Weight-Lifting Injuries on the Rise” by Nicholas Bakalar talks about injuries from weight lifting. Author provides some statistics to support his arguments. Some of them are percentages and graphs. In this article, author incorporates percentages and graphs to support and backup his claims. For example, “About 82 percent of the 970,000 people injured were men, according to the study, which appeared in the April issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine.” Author also cites his evidence so that readers know they are not reading myths. Nicholas Bakalar provided some visual representations of the data that was given. There were three graphs. First graph shows estimated weight-training injuries for men and women (in thousands), second graph represents the injured area (in percentages), and third graph shows us the type of injury (in percentages). Statistics were presented in the article. Use of percentages is very important because they compare information the sample sizes are different. Mathematics helps author to persuade the reader and to strengthen his claims. If an article like this was made without percentages and diagrams it would've been ineffective because there is not enough information to support the arguments.
