Analysis on the Business Opportunities

Article: A village in a million
The article, “A village in a million” written by “The economist” on December 16th 2010, shows a great insight into the Indian culture, highlighting with it the job opportunities that are beginning to arise as the country modernizes and with it how long-held and deeply embedded traditions are on the verge of becoming extinct.
Shahabpur is a small village located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. For centuries defined by its ancient ways and unique and diverse culture it is slowly being modernized. Shahabpur is located very close to the tracks and therefore not far from cities such as Mumbai. As the world progresses at a rapid rate coincidentally so does India.
The farming in Shahabpur doesn’t bring in enough income, realising this many fathers send their children to work in factories in bigger cities, such as Mumbai furthermore many fathers are giving up their agricultural ways and moving towards factory work too, bringing in as much as 200rupees a day, twice what they can bring in back home.
The business opportunities that arise from this vast movement to industrial work, is the opening of many more stores in Shahabpur bazaar and the increased exchange in money. As money comes in, Shahabpur is growing; three local schools have been set up, with more children being able to attend because of increased financial stability in the family.
Parents are now realising the importance of education, for their children to have higher chances of succession in the future. However, on the downside not all children/fathers enjoy or much more settle into a hectic and demanding work schedule, of many hours per day of industrial work away and little time at home. In conclusion, bringing the family back to where they started with struggling income from an acre of land they own for a farm.
On the upside, a mobile company has been set up in Shahabpur and last year (2009) most families were said to own at least one mobile phone.
However this change happening slowly yet gradually brings with it a deepening sadness in the elders who are carriers of traditional artisan skills. These traditional skills that once brought in so much income, are now considered “useless” and “unnecessary”. Such skills include those of the pot maker (taken over by companies making and selling plastic dishes) and “traditional hymn songs” (to bless fields and inspire growth). Only one man still sings these songs for an income however has refused to pass the skill on as it is unnecessary in todays’ society.
Thus what once created this small society and brought and kept money afloat is now being taken away by the need to become wealthier due to the worlds rapid growth rate/the economic boom as the world continues to modernize.
More and more people are moving to cities to work and giving up their inherited careers. But whilst the eldest suffer, the young prosper and the village continues to grow economically bringing with it jobs needed for the others back home.

...Modern SWOT analysis in business and marketing situations is normally structured so that a 2x2 matrix grid can be produced, according to two pairs of dimensions. Strengths and Weaknesses, are 'mapped' or 'graphed' against Opportunities and Threats. To enable this to happen cleanly and clearly, and from a logical point of view anyway when completing a SWOT analysis in most business and marketing situations, Strengths and Weaknesses are regarded distinctly as internal factors, whereas Opportunities and Threats are regarded distinctly as external factors. Here is the explanation in more detail: Strengths and Weaknesses the internal environment - the situation inside the company or organization for example, factors relating to products, pricing, costs, profitability, performance, quality, people, skills, adaptability, brands, services, reputation, processes, infrastructure, etc. factors tend to be in the present Opportunities and Threats the external environment - the situation outside the company or organization for example, factors relating to markets, sectors, audience, fashion, seasonality, trends, competition, economics, politics, society, culture, technology, environmental, media, law, etc. factors tend to be in the future swot matrix (2x2 matrix using internal/external categories) Here is a typical extension of the basic SWOT analysis grid into a useful 'action-based' 2x2 SWOT matrix. The SWOT analysis in this format acts as a quick decision-making...

...WHAT IS SWOT ANALYSIS? SWOT analysis (alternately SWOT Matrix) is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses/Limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in abusiness venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500companies. Setting the objective should be done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This would allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization.  Strengths: characteristics of the business, or project team that give it an advantage over others  Weaknesses (or Limitations): are characteristics that place the team at a disadvantage relative to others  Opportunities: external chances to improve performance (e.g. make greater profits) in the environment  Threats: external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project Identification of SWOTs is essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs. First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must...

...1.SWOT Analysis The SWOT analysis is a business analysis technique that your organization can perform for each of its products, services, and markets when deciding on the best way to achieve future growth. The process involves identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, and opportunities and threats present in the market that it operates in. The first letter of each of these four factors creates the acronym SWOT. As a manager, your role in any strategic planning is likely to involve providing operational data to help assess the internal capabilities, and (depending on your job function) you may also be asked to provide market intelligence. The completion of a SWOT analysis should help you to decide which market segments offer you the best opportunities for success and profitable growth over the life cycle of your product or service. The SWOT analysis is a popular and versatile tool, but it involves a lot of subjective decision making at each stage. It should always be used as a guide rather than as a prescription and it is an iterative process. There is no such thing as a definitive SWOT for any particular organization because the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats depend to a large extent on the business objective under consideration. KEY POINTS 1. SWOT Analysis provides information that helps in synchronizing an organization’s resources and capabilities with the external environment in which the organization operates. ...

Situation analysis involves "scanning and evaluating the organizational context, the external environment, and the organizational environment" (Coulter, 2005). This analysis can be performed using several techniques. Observation and communication are two very effective methods. To begin this process, organizations should observe the internal company environment. This includes employee interaction with other employees, employee interaction with management, manager interaction with other managers, and management interaction with shareholders. In addition, discussions, interviews, and surveys can be used to analyse the internal environment. Organizations also need to analyse the external environment. Carrying out a SWOT analysis To carry out a SWOT analysis effectively, it’s a good idea to get a team together, drawn from across the business, for a brain-storming session. Consider each of the four SWOT areas in turn, and make note of all the ideas, suggestions and comments which are made. These can be reviewed and edited after the brain-storming session.
