The text started with an article from The New York Times about an 11-year-old girl who was gang-raped. The article, however, was defending the perpetrators and victim-blaming the victim.
Gay points out that people often joke about rape or jokingly using the term “rape” such as “rape shower.” These jokes and terms support Gay’s opinion that people often use a careless language of sexual violence.
