...The interrogation of Eric, which begins this act, is the last in a chain of interrogations which have structured the play since the Inspector’s arrival (in order: Birling, Sheila, Gerald, Mrs. Birling, Eric). Each of the Birlings has played a part in Eva Smith’s death, and each of them must take part of the responsibility for what happened to her and for her final, sad choice. This motif, as well as the structure of the play and of Eva Smith’s life (though, to get the order of events right, Mrs. Birling was the last, not the penultimate, character to affect Eva in reality), points to two of Priestley’s key themes: the interrelationship of cause and effect and, more generally, the nature of time. The “chain of events” that the Inspector outlined as leading to Eva Smith’s death in Act One is a key idea in the play. The chain of personal and social events is not simply a metaphor for the way the class system holds people like “Eva Smiths and John Smiths” firmly in their subservient positions in society, but it is also a neat encapsulation of the Inspector’s key moral: that everyone, contrary to what Birling explains, is indeed bound up with everyone else “like bees in a hive.” As much as we like to think of ourselves as individuals, we are also social beings. The Birlings and Gerald Croft are chained together by Eva Smith’s death. Birling sets off the chain which makes possible Sheila’s bad deed against Eva, which in turn throws Eva into the path of Gerald and then Eric and, finally...

...IndE 311: Stochastic Models and Decision Analysis Winter 2007 Lab 7: Problem Session Pr. 17.10-3) The Garrett-Tompkins Company provides three copy machines in its copying room for the use of its employees. However, due to recent complaints about considerable time being wasted for a copier to become free, management is considering adding one or more additional copy machines. During the 2000 working hours per year, employees arrive at the copying room according to a Poisson process at a mean rate of 30 per hour. The time each employee needs with a copy machine is believed to have an exponential with a mean of 5 minutes. The lost productivity due to an employee spending time in the copying room is estimated to cost the company an average of $25 per hour. Each copy machine is leased for $3000 per year. Determine how many copy machines the company should have to minimize its expected total cost per hour. • Describe queuing model (i.e, M / M /s, M / M/ s // K, etc.) [pic] • [pic][pic] | |3 machines |4 machines |5 machines |6 machines |7 machines | |E (SC) | | | | | | |E(WC) | | | | | | |E(TC) | | | ...

...Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation Mike Stephenson. EN3220-Written Analysis December 14th, 2012 Abstract This is a short paper on one of my few dealings with Neighborhood Preservation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The issue they had with me was the fact that our house had chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim. The rest of the paper includes what I did to resolve the issue they had with me. Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation This all started when one day coming home from our capstone class there was a piece of paper taped to the front door. The piece of paper was from the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation/Code Enforcement Division. It stated they were conducting inspections in our area and that our property was found to be in violation. The violations were for chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim of the house. If the violations were not corrected within thirty days then there is the possibility of being fined up to $2,500.00. Upon receiving this, I began to develop a step by step procedure to help resolve the issue, since most of my time was already being spent on work for our capstone class. The first step was to call and talk to the Code Enforcement Inspector. This step took almost a week to complete because we ended up playing phone tag with each other. Once we were finally able to catch each other, I was able to ask a few questions concerning the violations, time frame for completion, and to notify them of my...

...these programs are the best options for the company. This is very important job in any company as you are in charge of not only protecting the company’s data with these tools, but also recovering any information that may have been lost or deleted. There are many programs that are available that can be used to recover deleted files. Two of the programs that you could use are the MiniTool Partition Recovery and PC Inspector File Recovery. The MiniTool Partition Recovery is a free program that has a wizard-based interface which makes it very easy and straightforward to use and understand. You can point the MiniTool Partition Recovery at the problem drive, specify the area to be searched, and it will scan for the missing partition. Then a report will generate that will let you know what the program has found, and you can then recover that partition in a few seconds typically. The only downfall is that you won’t get a bootable recovery disk, so if the partition is damaged then the MiniTool Recovery program won’t be able to recover the deleted partition. The PC Inspector File Recovery allows you to be able to recover a full set of missing files on both FAT and NTFS drives. They are clearly presented in a simple folder view and there is also a simple search dialog to help you locate the files by name. The program can then restore them to local or a network drive. There are quite a few tools that can be used to gather digital evidence from a cell phone. Two tools that can be...

...Adam Fye Dr. Melo MGT 313-07 23 October 2015 Ethics Analysis Paper April 5, 2010 was a day that forever changed the lives of 29 coal miners from southern West Virginia, and their families. These twenty-nine men who worked at the Upper Big Branch (UBB) coal mine owned by the Massey Energy Corporation all perished in the largest mining disaster in over four decades. The dilemma that I will analyze in my paper is whether Massey Energy acted in an ethical manner with regards to the events at the UBB mine. The dilemma will be analyzed using two different ethical principles, the principle of lawfulness and the principle of harm. Along with the ethical principles, Massey will be subject to two different methods of ethical reasoning. These two methods are the human rights and utilitarian methods. After analyzing their actions in accordance to these principles and methods, I concluded by all accounts that Massey did not act in an ethical way. Ethical principles are society’s guide to moral behavior. They are basic behavioral rules that are considered essential for the preservation and continuation of organized life. One principle for ethical and moral behavior is the principle of lawfulness. This principle states that individuals are to not violate the law in order to act in an ethical fashion. Massey Energy Corporation was known for not adhering to governmental mandates that ensured the safety of the environment. Two years prior to the disaster at UBB, Massey violated policies...

...(eStJ) Supervisor Guardians [ESTJs] are squarely on the side of rules and procedures, and they can be quite serious about seeing to it that others toe the mark—or else face the consequences. They do not hesitate to give their stamp of approval, nor do they withhold their directions or suggestions for improvement. Like seasoned, stalwart umpires, Supervisors will set their jaw and make the call on anyone who steps up to bat. They even feel obligated to do so, and they’re sometimes surprised when others don’t seem grateful for being set straight. Comprising at least ten percent of the population, Supervisors go by experience and that is what counts, not speculation and experimentation, and certainly not fantasy. They keep their feet firmly on the ground and make sure that those under their supervision do the same, whether employee, subordinate, offspring, or spouse. If others wish to fool around and daydream, fine, as long as they do it on their own time—which means after the job is done. But if they fritter away their time while on duty, they should not be surprised when the Supervisor calls them on the carpet. The top sergeant will not put up with such nonsense. Supervisors are gregarious and civic-minded, and are usually key players of their community. They are generous with their time and energy, and very often belong to a variety of groups, supporting them through steady attendance, but also taking a vocal leadership role. Indeed, membership groups of all kinds attract ESTJs...

...Robotic Assistants for Aircraft Inspectors Mel Siegel, Priyan Gunatilake, and Gregg Podnar Intelligent Sensor, Measurement, and Control Laboratory The Robotics Institute -- School of Computer Science -- Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-3891 ABSTRACT Aircraft flight pressurization/depressurization cycling causes the skin to inflate and deflate, stressing it around the rivets that fasten it to the airframe. The resulting strain, exacerbated by corrosion, drives the growth of initially microscopic cracks. To avoid catastrophe, aircraft are inspected periodically for cracks and corrosion. The inspection technology employed is ~90% naked-eye vision. We have developed and demonstrated robotic deployment of both remote enhanced 3D-stereoscopic video instrumentation for visual inspection and remote eddy current probes for instrumented inspection. This article describes the aircraft skin inspection application, how robotic deployment may alleviate human performance problems and workplace hazards during inspection, practical robotic deployment systems, their instrumentation packages, and our progress toward developing image enhancement and understanding techniques that could help aircraft inspectors to find cracks, corrosion, and other visually detectable damage. ...formed into three subgroups. Each subgroup had a wirer and a supervisor. Moreover, two inspectors were hired to walk between the groups. This experiment provided an outcome where two informal groups (“cliques”) performed worse than the “normal” group, the reason for this is that “cliques” had a number of rules, such as: -If you do too much work, you are a rate-buster -If you do too little work, you are a chisler “You should not tell a supervisor anything that might get a colleague into trouble. If you do, you are a squealer.” This illustrates that “cliques” performed to protect the group from internal indiscretions and from outside interference. Those outcomes led to the human relations approach to management which held that work should be a source of social relationships for individuals, a way of meeting their need for belonging and for group membership. Moreover, such results showed that employees were willing to respond more to the social forces of their colleagues rather than to the controlling individuals and incentives of management. To draw your attention, Mayo summarized that “at work, within their social group, people fulfil their needs for belonging and recognition, which enhances their...

...PPG Li Liang, founder of PPG graduated from New York university return to china to develop its online apparel retailing. By June 2007, with daily average sale of 10000 shirts the company was close to the industry leader Youngor. The industry adopted vertical integrated value chain and manufacturing for more than 1500 retail stores through out the country. The company had 300 staff working for the call centre with no factory or retail store but with the powerful IT system that perform data stocking and transferring in more than 20 servers with this light asset model the entire value chain and company achieve subsequent growth for itself. They have targeted low end men apparel. The production standard from fabric to government was higher and therefore the risk for fabric suppliers producing in advance were lower, because the company contained complete value chain from cotton plating to government manufacturing. Although the Chinese customer was unfamiliar with the direct selling market. DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL PPG first store was its product catalogue and website other important stores was call centres which supported its value chain in gathering detail information such as customer location, age, buying habits, and occupation etc. This was an added advantage for lighter distribution channel. On the later run with intensive advertising data mining and supply change management were adversely affected. VANCL ChenNian is...

It is important to prove that a process is proven capable before developing statistical control limits because it would be a waste of money if they went through the whole process just to find out it wasn’t capable. It would also be a waste of time and there is no business that wants to waste both their time and money. 3. Integrated devices is being reactive because it was only after a call concerning a recurring manufacturing problem at Plant No.3 that Bill took action. They didn’t act proactively by conducting surveys or having a dedicated process engineer. They also weren’t checking up on the supplier and taking occasional samples so that they could make sure the supplier was continuing to deliver the promised quality, thus holding them accountable. If they had been proactive, this whole situation might have been prevented. 4. The purchasing staff should enter all negotiations with their supplier with clearly defined objectives and goals.
