...Previous studies on rock lobster species throughout the world have shown differences in the dietary behaviour across depth categories and size classes. However as females in the sampled lobsters only constituted 5.1% of the population, the dietary behaviour was only taken into consideration for the male lobsters across depth and size. Early studies at J.tristani at Tristan da Cunha islands on the biology of the species found inter-island differences in growth rates and dietary behaviour (Roscoe 1979, Pollock 1991). According to the Pollock paper, which assessed the inter-island variations in growth and population structure between Tristan, Nightingale, Inaccessible and Gough Islands. In the sampling process in the study, it was recorded that...

Hudson Jr, William Del Valle MGT/448 Global Business Strategies February 15, 2012 John O'Brien, MBA Final Global Business Plan Paper * In the previous weeks, Team D set out to gain a better understanding of globalization and determine if opportunities exist for branching out their fictional company DeltaCompCarib (DCC) into a new global market. During this time the team developed a business strategy to promote DCC and bring its product line to Puerto Rico. Early on DCC had to conduct a regional analysis, country analysis, and an organization and product or service analysis. Regional Analysis Regional Alliances and Economic Integration Puerto Rico is just one of many Caribbean countries, which make up the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). This regional integration between Caribbean countries, formed in 1973. According to the United States Trade International Commission (2008), “The purpose of regional integration is to achieve economic gains through free trade flow and investments between neighboring countries often by lowering or eliminating tariffs against imports from fellow member countries. These actions increase duty free trade, tourism, movement of labor, and the flow of capital across national borders, reducing the possibility of conflict. Regional integration promotes global business in that it removes, in stages or altogether...

Introduction Is there a way for Pacific island countries to opt for a more inexpensive and environmental friendly power source for rural electrification or should they just stick to the current source of energy they are using at the moment? This report provides then a summary of the evaluation on the economic and financial cost of these alternative renewable energy projects that the pacific islands may opt to in terms of their cost-benefit analysis. From recent data report the world relied on renewable sources for around 13.1% of its primary energy supply, according to IEA statistics. Renewables accounted for 19.5% of global electricity generation. (IRENA websites, 2009) According to the report, Woodruff stated that, “In the pacific islands alone approximately 70% (or approximately 50% excluding Papua New Guinea) of the region’s population still lacks access to electricity. In addition, Pacific Island Countries, despite their abundance of renewable energy resources, remain almost completely dependent on imported fossil fuels for meeting their energy needs. However, imported fuel from overseas account for an average of 40% of countries’ gross domestic products. With rising fuel...

...site of a barrier island had potential for development. He then used his savings and some financial assistance from his family to build Jumpin’ Jeff’s Beach Bar on the barrier island. After Jumpin’ Jeff’s opening, Mr. Johnson soon realized that there are lots of challenges waiting for him, such as price setting, menu development, staffing issues, and cultural issues. Situation Analysis Since Jeff Johnson owns the land, Jumpin’ Jeff’s Beach Bar is the only one on this particular island. Mr. Johnson had chosen a good restaurant location, as he has a monopoly of business on the island. He can do whenever businesses he wants on the island. Mr. Johnson spent a lot of money on design elements, as every supplies and equipment is shipped from Florida. The restaurant was designed in a South Seas beach-hut style with shutters, which should be pretty eyes catching. The island itself is a barrier island, open on the eastern side to the Atlantic Ocean and the western side to the Haven. The other side of the Haven is a very small town, Kingsville, with two grocery stores, three churches, two resorts, two gift shops, and a small open-air market open on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The Haven is popular in winter with cruising small boat sailors looking for a good anchorage in a sheltered harbor, amenities provided by the grocery stores and a place where they could order parts for their boats, engines and marine. From 1970’s, the beach was frequently used by the small boat sailors for recreation...

...Marketing Plan for Island Air: Ho`olaule`a- A Celebration Marketing Plane Time Frame: 2014-2015 Submitted by Jason Vellen from Vellux Marketing Consulting: To the Board of Directors of Island Air Submitted on: 6/7/2014 * Executive Summary Island Air is a niche player in the interisland market of Hawaii. It has a long history in the market, and its primary revenue source is achieved through selling tickets on its planes that offer transportation among five islands within Hawaii. It currently has a market share of 10% and an average load factor of 54.5% (percent of seats sold on each flight) Its main competitor is Hawaiian Air who has a market share of over 85% and a much higher load factor on their flights (1). Island Air does not have the resources to compete directly with Hawaiian Air for all travelers, rather through effective marketing which is outlined in this plan it will draw away travelers from Hawaiian Air thereby increasing its revenue by approximately 20 million dollars a year, or 30 million during the entirety of the marketing campaign. To achieve this increase in revenue both load factor and market share are going to be increased. The next year is an exciting time for Island Air and presents a great opportunity to implement a marketing plan that will achieve the above revenue growth. Island Air will be receiving brand new highly efficient Bombardier Q-400 planes that will replaced their tired and aging fleet of ATR-72 aircraft. Additionally 2015...

...Small Island Developing States Speech – St. Lucia’s Prime Minister as CARICOM Representative Written By Ms. Ingrid Baker: 620042573 (Advisor to Hon. Dr. Kenny and Dr. Anthony) For The Hon. Dr. Kenny (Prime Minister of St. Lucia) Head of Delegation Topic: The Opportunities and challenges for development now being posed to small state economies in light of the implications of climate change. Excellences, Mr. Secretary-General, distinguished ladies and gentlemen; I have the distinct honour to deliver this presentation on behalf of the 15 member states of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM. Now, this comes at a critical juncture for all Small Island Developing States. When, more than ever, critical leadership is required. As we already know, we face the same realities in "the Caribbean where we live," and we endure this reality through the threat produced on our islands by climate change. Climate is existential within the Caribbean, and is very badly affected by rising sea levels, but not that only, since we also need to think of things like the acidification of the oceans, the effects that this has on fish stocks and what this means for food security. Projections show that this warming that is taking place, will be accompanied by an increase in heavy rainfall events and other temporal and spatial changes in precipitation patterns, and by more intense or frequent cyclones/hurricanes. Agricultural land, water resources and biodiversity are already under pressure from increases...

...“Islands are fragile” (O’Riodan, 2009). The delicate and sensitive entities of islands need to be managed by the stakeholders in a sustainable way in order to maintain the natural and cultural environment. Sustainable tourism is defined as “tourism that is economically viable but does not destroy the resources on which the future of tourism will depend, notably the physical environment, and the social fabric of the host community.” (Brent, R., 2003). Islands suffer from special problems such as their limited carrying capacity, their lack of product diversity, their history, their peripheral and isolated nature, as well as having large endemism in regard to species. These problems can have diverse and wide ranging effects on stakeholders’ abilities to set up sustainable tourism projects. Space or carrying capacity is a major constraint on the creation of sustainable tourism projects. There is, as Bramwell (2004) suggests, an absolute restricted resource base which should act as a restrictive band on development and prevent sprawling unsustainable development. Developers and tour operators are at loggerheads with environmental agencies over this, as they are seeking quick short term profits with disregard for the future of the islands. This is shown in Bali, Indonesia on ‘Rama Beach’ the sea is littered with dead fish, oil and litter from the Rama beach hotel (personal obvs., 2010). This detracts from the selling points of an island resort (sun, sea and sand). Butler’s (1980)...

According to the news, the little island of American Samoa is one of the top countries facing obesity. Recently this year on CBS News accorking to Ben Tracy (2013), the obesity rate I American Samoa is 75%. This is a big issue whereby our people’s lives are at risk and it is the reason as to why we chose to create a new product to help beat obesity. Like a smoothie or slushy, we have decided to create a new type of smoothie called ‘Island Fruity.’ By hearing these two words ‘island’ and ‘fruity’, it simply tells what the ingredients used for production are local grown fruits. Instead of buying groceries or add other imports, we chose to make use of all the available local fruits we have on island like the pawpaw, bananas, and pineapples to come up with a new product. this way, there will be an increase in savings, less in spending and able to achieve our goals. ‘Island Fruity’ will help reduce obesity in a way and help promote a healthy lifestyle simply earning its worth.
