The Poster is an advertisement for a movie called “The Messenger” which was supposed to be shown in the cinemas.
The predominant colors in the Posters are yellowish/gold and black. The colors are the same as those one would usually find in old sepia pictures. In combination with the very old, damaged house, which is also mainly colored in black, this gives a very glooming touch to the Poster. The sepia-colors seem foreboding and dangerous. The color black connects with night and darkness, which the viewer further connects with nightmares, dark “powers” and evil creatures. The girl is dressed in white and a lot of light falls on her. The color white symbolizes purity and innocence. The fact that she her clothing and her skin are very bright and white give the poster not only a frosty feeling but also draws attention to the shadows in the girls face. The eyes and the mouth are in the dark and this emphasizes her worried expression. Furthermore the white lets the crow stand out in front of the girl. The black clearly stands out from the white. The Crow links back to the dominant color black and therefore symbolizes evil and threat.
The young boy – which the viewer might estimate to be 4-6 years old – makes the poster even more horrifying. The little boy stands for innocence, as he seems to portray a almost angle like appearance: blond hair, big eyes, etc. Similar to what the white color stands for, the boy impersonates innocence. This draws a contrast to the evil and seems to make the aura of the poster even more threatening. Both characters are in the foreground and right in the middle, which ultimately attracts the viewer’s attention. The little boy seems juxtaposed to the background and the crow but this draws the attention to the facial expression of the girl and the crow behind the boy.
