...Journal #1 – Week 1 – Foundations of Interviewing and Counseling My thoughts on taking a counseling class was very thrilling to me. I know learning about children should be a class I’d be more interested in but personally I am notorious for my “Coffee dates” and deep conversations; I absolutely love to sit down in a relaxing café and catch up with old friends. Over the years I’ve noticed my company really respecting me and considering my thoughts on situations their going through, bad or good. Learning the foundations of interviewing was very eye opening to me. The textbook really clarified that there was a difference between interviewing and counseling. The textbook defines interviewing as the basic process used for gathering data, providing...

...Summary of “A random walk down Wall Street” Written by Burton G. Malkiel Chapter 1: Firm Foundations and Castles in the air A random walk means that future steps or directions cannot be predicted on the basis of past history. In the stock market, this concept means short-term changes of stock prices are unpredictable. Burton, writer of the book, distinguishes between “investing” and “speculating” and I agree this conceptual difference. Investing is purchasing assets to acquire profit in the form of reasonably predictable income such as dividend, interest, rentals over the long term. On the other hand, speculator buys stocks hoping for a short-term gain over the next days or weeks. Traditionally, investment experts have used one of two approaches for asset valuation. One is “the firm-foundation theory”, and the other is “the castle-in-the-air theory”. The interesting point is, two theories appear to be mutually exclusive. The firm-foundation theory insists that each investment instrument has a firm anchor of something called “intrinsic value”, which can be determined by careful analysis of present conditions and future prospects. Williams, writer of “The Theory of Investment Value”, went on to argue that the intrinsic value of stock was equal to the present value of its entire future dividend. The theory is reasonable, because the greater present dividends and increasing rate, the greater the value of the stock. The castle-in-the-air-theory focuses on psychic...

...engineering, soil investigation is very necessary. It is essential to investigate the soil of the selected plot on which a structure will be constructed. Based on soil investigation a soil report is prepared for the purpose of designing the building foundation. When an engineer designs building foundation he/she must carefully read the report and design the foundation based on the data provided in the report. Soil investigation is required for the following purposes - To know the allowable bearing capacity of foundation for proposed building. To know the depth and type of foundation for the proposed building. To know the allowable passive resistance for the foundation of proposed building. To know the type, grading and nature of soil. To know the ground water level. Typical steps of soil investigation Soil investigation involves following steps – Details planning for the sequence of operations. Collecting the samples of soil from the plot. Determining the soil characteristics by conducting field tests. Study the condition of ground water level. Collecting ground water sample for chemical analysis. Soil exploration. Testing all collected samples in the laboratory. Preparation of drawings and charts Analysis the test results. Preparing report Depending on the load type, soil investigation can be limited to Penetrometer teats only for relatively good soil and light loads. For heavier soil, a combination of both Penetrometer tests and borehole...

...In my rhetorical analysis of the CoverGirl advertisement I analysis three rhetorical tools that are strongly conveyed to me. The advertisement uses these rhetorical tools to further persuaded audiences to buy the CoverGirl product and even stick with the brand. In this analysis I will cover the rhetorical appeals that try to convince viewers that the product is superior, the use of myth and how it is used to strengthen the persuasiveness of the advertisement, and the rhetorical situation of the advertisement. Let us move onto rhetorical appeal Rhetorical appeal is a very good way to structure any persuasive document and when used correctly it can service its purpose well. Let’s analysis how this persuasive advertisement uses rhetorical appeal. Pathos in this advertisement is very straight forward; it wants the view to be curious but also excited with a hint of wonder or in other words it wants “to raise emotions” (Aristotle, n.d. p. 146) within a viewer. The use of Taylor Swift along with the mention of more bang for your buck, since this cream can beat ones that cost $180, would draw on a viewer’s emotion and cause them to be persuaded because their idol is advertising a product that she, Taylor Swift, is using daily to perfect her skin and it isn’t an expensive designer brand. Next we will focus on logos and its use in this advertisement. Logos is the “logical appeals [that] stress the reasonableness” (Aristotle, n.d p. 146). This advertisement relies heavily on...

This has made it quite imperative for contracting parties to analyse project delays for purposes of making right decisions on potential time and/or cost compensation claims. Over the years, existing delay analysis techniques (DATs) for aiding this decision-making have been helpful but have not succeeded in curbing the high incidence of disputes associated with delay claims resolutions. A major source of the disputes lies with the limitations and capabilities of the techniques in their practical use. Developing a good knowledge of these aspects of the techniques is of paramount importance in understanding the real problematic issues involved and their improvement needs. This paper seeks to develop such knowledge and understanding (as part of a wider research work) via: an evaluation of the most common DATs based on a case study...
