Analyzing art in the modern day culture is an art form on its own. The exhibition, “The Look of Law”, shows the different point of views of politics and conveys a message that looks down upon the government. It concentrates on the way how our society interprets current law and the choices our government makes. Susan Silton’s sculpture, “Bomb, Leaflet”, displays a green missile that has the word, “empty” written on the side. Her art piece refers to the “weapons of mass destruction” that were found in Iraq. She exhibits a powerful disapproval to the war in Iraq, like most of the other art pieces in “The Look of Law”.
“Bomb, Leaflet” addresses the theme of the exhibition by pointing out the key aspect of poor political decisions in a variety of ways. First, the key word “empty”, is written on the side which condemns the lying and scheming of the government. Secondly, the missile is the color green that would be completely noticeable in the desert and would be impossible to “hide”. Susan Silton wants to make it sure the viewer realizes the premature decision of the government’s actions to go into war. One of the very sole reasons of why this country went to war with Iraq was because of the weapons of mass destruction. Also, “Bomb, Leaflet”, will remind people the original reason of engaging in a war has been lost in time. Most citizens have forgotten the cause and allow the media to tell us what to think or not to think. I believe this exhibition’s primary goal is to reverse that mind set in people today.

Analyzing Art and Architecture

...Running head: Art and Architecture Analyzing Art and Architecture HU300 Art and Humanities: 20th Century and Beyond Art and Architecture I have lived in California for three years, have visits San Francisco numerous times and it was not until this past weekend that I saw the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco for the first time. We took the trip to show our foreign exchange around and show her the beauty of our area and I was surprised to find myself in amazement not only that I did not rush to see such a thing before now, but the beauty and history of the building (pic. 1) as well. In the center is a large dome topped structure surrounded by intricate detailed carvings beautiful landscaping surrounds the front towering columns, stretching from each side is 200 feet of shorter square buildings with columns across the front. (pic. 2) As you stroll through the structure you see detail and beautiful carving in every corner and every inch, (pic 3) in the main Dome, when you look up, you’re surrounded by statues of angels looking down at you from every direction making you feel like you’re the center of their attention. (pic. 4) In the year 1915 architect Bernard R. Maybeck was given the task of creating a Palace of Fine arts for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, its sole purpose was to exhibit works of art. Bernard R. Maybeck used a classicism approach and chose the theme of a Roman style ruin with a romantic feel and Greek decoration. When Maybeck...

Analyzing Art

...Analyzing Art Josh Bedard Rasmusen College Submitted for G125/HUM2023 Section 14 Humanities - 2014 Winter Quarter Analyzing Art The piece of art that I chose was the Mona Lisa. This is one of the most well-known pieces of art in the world. It is also covered in mystery. The painting is one of a woman named Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. She is sitting in a chair looking at the painter. She has a subdued look on her face, yet if you look closely at her eyes and lips she almost has a smirk on her face. One that is trying to say “if they only knew what this painting was about.” As if it was meant for as a clue for one or two few special people to see and not the everyday person. I like many people are not sure what the reasoning behind this painting is. The painting could have been for just a painting or as some people think it could have been for a whole other reason. Some think that it could be a female version of the painter himself or have hidden meaning within the painting. When looking at this painting I think there is a story behind it. I think her eyes tell you a story that many people may not see. I think that there is a reason for this painting that many have not looked at. It almost seems like she is trying not to laugh while posing for the painting. As if what she is wearing and the way she is posing is as if she is trying to trick everyone who will be looking at the painting. This painting show perfectly what the...

Analyzing Art

...Analyzing Art For this module assignment I chose to do my paper on "Vincent van Gogh, Still Life of Oranges and Lemons with Blue Gloves, 1889". I chose this painting because I am rather familiar with it. In elementary school my teacher had us try to draw a painting by Van Gogh and this is the one I chose (didn't come out too pretty). My grandmother also has a imitation of the painting in her dining room. Today, Vincent van Gogh is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. The completion date of this post-impressionism still life, was in the year of 1889. The place of creation was Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France. Vincent van Gogh painted this picture soon after his release from the hospital, where he was recovering from the disastrous final days of Paul Gauguin’s stay with him in Arles. In a long letter to his brother Theo posted January 23, 1889, he mentions creating this painting alongside several other issues, including the need to make money through picture sales. He likely had the market in mind in painting this still life. Van Gogh was clearly attracted to the shapes and hues of the citrus fruit arrayed in the wicker basket, and the way their varied orb shapes play against the weave of the dried sticks, the whole set off by the prickly needles of the cypress branches. Van Gogh refers in his letter to an “air of chic” in this picture, prompted perhaps by the inclusion of blue garden gloves. The...

Furthermore, the article indicates that Nasca art is strongly concerned with the imagery of war, thus, indicating that there might have been a lot of violent conflict in this culture. It also mentions that the war for the Nasca people was internal as in the art there was no foreign prisoners, nor scenes of homage or tribute-paying rites. In addition, the...

Fine Arts Describing an Artwork

...Patric Rooney Intro to Fine Arts Gary Towne The fine arts are comprised of multiple forms of arts, two of them being visual art and music. I decided to analyze one piece of visual art and one piece of music, based on several different elements of the respective categories. I chose to begin with the visual art piece, The Arnolfini Wedding, because of its many small and intricate details hidden in the artwork. Jan van Eyck (Flemish, before 1390-1441), The Arnolfini Wedding, 1434, oil on oak panel of 3 vertical boards, 82.2 cm × 60 cm, National Gallery of Art, London, is an intricate piece of art with many minuscule details that contain an abundance of symbolism and meaning. One of the first things to catch your eye will be the man and woman standing in the forefront of the image. At first, one may believe that the woman in the velvet green robe is pregnant, but it has been found that this was actually excess fabric from her robe creating the bump on her stomach. Both the man and woman have their hands in positions that imply that they are taking some type of oath, more specifically an oath of marriage. The clothing worn by the wedding couple is common clothing of their time, for people of the upper class. If you were to zoom in on the picture, you begin to realize the realistic qualities of all of the textures in the painting. One use of this skill that jumps out at me is the lifelike beads that sit beside the circular mirror. If you look closely at the gear...

Menil Collection Analysis

...The Menil Collection This last week I visited the Menil Collection. I arrived at the Menil Collection around 1:00 pm and stayed there about two hours for visiting the many collections. Before I went there, I had thought that I was going to go there to look at a bunch of boring artwork. However, as I am walking on the sidewalk looking at this calm and peaceful neighborhood, I am falling in love with all the beautiful trees and the environment. It is a simple building, but it has a treasure inside awaits my curiosity. Going inside of the museum, I saw all types of different artwork pieces, but I was interested by one piece of artwork that I am going to write about. I chose a Violin on a Table by Pablo Picasso because it has many elements when...

Proposal Essay

...Proposal Essay Identity and animation will be the focus of my design process. The discovery of my identity and belonging through my art is what captivates me to understand who I am. The way variations to proportion can be modified by the artist, the super-deformed characters feature a non-proportionally small body compared to the head where as some animations completely disregard these proportions, such that they resemble Western cartoons and for exaggeration, certain body features are increased in proportion, the comedic effects often utilize these variations emphasize the story behind the artist. As Horace states “A picture is a poem without words”. I began watching anime at young age and it gradually developed to become a part of my identity. When I watch anime I feel happy, I kind of lose myself in the world of anime and the gripping storyline, which during that time, I feel satisfied with myself, like nothing has ever gone wrong. Throughout my design I aim to capture some of this imaginary with humanly features visual imageries and attempt to create through art endeavouring to refashion the same excited traits. The 19th century philosopher Henry David Thoreau quoted “This world is but a canvas to our imagination”. Watching anime I understand what he means. Over the past a few years I have been watching anime which I have collected images from the internet. Eduard Manet

...scenes of people and city life. He was a leading artist in the transition from realism to impressionism, and he lived from 1832 to 1883. Interestingly, Manet’s career choice was a little different than his parents had hoped. Manet came from royalty with his father, Auguste Manet, a high-ranking judge, and his mother, Eugénie-Desirée Fournier, the daughter of a diplomat and the goddaughter of the Swedish crown prince. They had expected for their son to “choose a respectable career”, preferably in law. However that was not in the cards for Manet. Ironically, his art career is still being appreciated over a century later. Manet's uncle, Edmond Fournier, supported Manet is his early art interests, arranging frequent trips to the Louvre. Eventually, Manet and his parents were on the same page and they supported his calling for art. The artist’s use of color, space and composition: The lemon by Manet is a unique piece of art. Manet utilizes realism to capture the simplistic form of the fruit. However, this painting is nothing less than sophisticated demonstrating Manet’s true command of color and touch with his brush. The painting is encompassed by dull, dark colors with sporadic brightness. Manet uses different forms of yellow to capture the color, shape, and texture of the lemon. The sudden brightness in the painting can be seen as the natural reflection that the lemon and the plate give off. He also utilizes dark browns mixed with green to reflect the depth and texture of the...

These differences allow an insight into a time period and a place in history. One can examine it on a small scale, analyzing what the piece meant to an artist or what the purpose was in creating it. Cinematography

...Cinematography today is one of the most popular types of contemporary art. The latter is the brightest expression of the human soul! What are the reasons for this? History of art shows us two basic reasons for its existence. One of them can be roughly called “art for art” and the second one is rooted in the necessity of human beings to solve vital social problems. Because these rapidly expanding problems interfere with the private life of everyone; we can witness predominance of the “second” type of art. As an example we can quote M. Moore’s movie, titled “ F 9/11”. Analyzing any work (piece) of art, we must take into consideration that every artist aims to make us think about a problem through his own vision. The question is whether he can pull it off or not? It is no secret, that there are various kinds of techniques to influence the audience. M. Moore brilliantly selects and perfectly times the succession of the episodes which makes him absolutely convictive. But we must tell the difference between the opinion of one single man and the reality. M. Moore, a talented journalist, uses the well-known mass media techniques, for example, he only chooses that footage, which goes along well with his understanding of a problem. The frames we are watching: the harrows of war, ruined and burning houses, soldiers, who are killing people and listening to a Bloodhound gang song, children playing in the streets before the war, determine our reaction (attitude) to the problem...

Filmmaking Analysis: an Art Form in Itself

...Filmmaking Analysis: An Art form in itself Robert Haskins ENG 225: Introduction to Films Hannah Judson 28 June 2010 Filmmaking Analysis: An Art form in itself The art of motion pictures have been compared to other forms of expression art, but what makes it unique is that other art forms are incorporated into motion pictures. Through moving pictures, a story can be told with fluidity and rhythm, like music. Much like a sculpture molds clay or stone into something beautiful; a filmmaker can show us their vision or perspective of a story. Motion pictures have a way of influencing us to change the world, make us laugh and make us cry. This powerful medium has altered our world and has helped shape our culture. Analysis and evaluation is only natural, as humans will always strive to understand why this form of art has made such a lasting impact. To use the techniques to analyze a film, one must first familiarize themselves with the literary elements. By recognizing what the theme is in a motion picture, it becomes easier to see the filmmaker’s intention to the motion picture. Soundtrack and musical score also has the ability to add texture and depth to the experience of watching motion pictures. Just as we place symbolic meaning to other forms of expression, we do the same for motion pictures. Each of us have a different perspective in viewing motion pictures just as no one can see the same piece of art the same way. The style and the way characters are presented...
