When I first read this poem, the first thing that I noticed was the author’s blunt diction when he said “I saw a groundhog lying dead.”. This line automatically caught my attention and my expectations changed. The title reminded me of a sunny day in June after the groundhog decided that spring has arrived. The thoughts of spring blooming and the images of Bill Murray popped in my head. Then as I encounter the poem, I realized that everything that I thought was the complete opposite. The author showcases how he loses his innocence as the found the dead groundhog on the floor and because of this memory, his perspective changed about spring and the significance about the groundhog.
