...Week 3 Analyzing Credibility Assignment Who paid for each example to be created? The news clip example was paid for by CNN. The TV commercial ad was paid for by Progressive Auto Insurance. Can you detect a slant—that is, a secondary opinion conveyed by the examples’ creators? In regards to the news clip I do not detect a secondary opinion by the examples’ creators. This clip is about remember 911 and I believe CNN agrees with what former New York City Mayor Giuliani has to say about the matter. I do not detect a secondary opinion in the Progressive TV commercial either. The purpose of the ad was to sell the product which is what the ad does. What does each example reflect about society at large? Is it credible? Explain you answers. The news clip is from a credible source. CNN is a popular world news resource. To me this example shows that our society at large can pull together in times of tragedy. People can forget about differences within our society and unite for a bigger purpose. We can do what is necessary to protect ourselves from more attacks. The Progressive TV commercial is also from a credible source. Progressive is a well-known insurance company. This ad says that our society is highly concerned with money, most importantly saving money. Are you skeptical of the sources’ credibility? Why or why not? I am not skeptical of the credibility of the news source slip. The clip is broadcasted on CNN, a well-known world news source. Larry King Live is also a commonly...

...that if people are having it appeals to more people, especially at this time with the economic problems that everyone is having. Wendy’s Commercial: Wild Berry Frosting * In the commercials from Wendy’s the ads were paid for by Wendy’s. Wendy’s slant to their commercial is that by having a Wendy’s product you can experience a mini vacation. The commercials from Wendy’s once again have the same reflection of society that Progressive’s commercials have, that they make everything more fun. I think that at this moment in time with the economic problems and everything that is happening, people are more apt to go for something that appeals to the light hearted, to their happier moments. 2nd Part I am not skeptical of Giuliani’s credibility as he, as well as every American, knows what happened on 9/11. His sincerity came across clearly and he was in no position to fake the topic, especially since it creates a very strong emotional feedback from almost everyone. * Giuliani did not appear to be biased as he was speaking his own opinion and giving only facts that could be verified. 3rd Part * Progressive Commercial: Meant to be Together * * The claim that Progressive’s commercial Meant to be Together makes is basically that by switching or choosing Progressive to be your insurer you save more money and get to have fun. The...

...In regards to the news clip “Giuliani Remembers 9/11,” CNN and its creators paid for the broadcasted interview. When I listened to Giuliani and King talk about 9/11, I didn’t feel as though there was any kind of slant. As Giuliani and King reflect back on 9/11, it shows that not only are they still affected by the tragedy, but so is America. I believe Giuliani to be credible because he experienced 9/11 himself. I am not skeptical on his credibility because during 9/11, Giuliani was in the middle of the chaos trying to help others. He holds those memories dear to his heart, and will continue to for many years to come. I did not detect any bias from him because he was speaking from his personal opinion, and experience. The commercial from the Pedigree website was also paid by Pedigree and its creators. In my opinion, there was no slant in the Pedigree commercial. The Pedigree commercial lets me know that Pedigree is just another type of dog food trying to persuade animal owners into buying their brand because they say it is healthy. I do not find Pedigree to be credible because there is no proof that they are healthier than other brands. In the Pedigree ad, they show a dog and a person in the car and the car tilts over claiming the dog is overweight. They are also claiming that their dog food is healthy for overweight dogs. After seeing this ad, consumers may have the desire to switch their dog food over to Pedigree because they have a new “light” version for dogs that need to...

...Assignment: Analyzing Credibility Lance L Boyd May 30, 2010 After viewing the “Giuliani Remembers 9/11” news clip I watched two videos from the first link http://www.jnj.com/connect/. The first video was “Taking Skin Care Personally” and the second was “Preparing Nurses for the Future.” Johnson and Johnson own the copy write and sponsored both videos. The video “Taking Skin Care Personally” featured actress Cherie Price explaining how the “Skin Id” system help resolve her acne problem. The skin care video is toward Johnson and Johnson Neutrogena products because it did not reference any other company’s products. Even the title “Taking Skin Care Personally” implies Johnson and Johnson takes skin care personally. The second video “Preparing Nurses for the Future” is promoting a program called “Your Future in Nursing” that prepares new nurses for the workplace reducing the high attrition rates that result from the pressures and responsibilities of being a nurse fresh out of school. The issues associated with starting a new job affects society because there difficulties making this transition for all professions. Therefore, this video relates to society as the whole. Johnson and Johnson is a very large well respected company. Although the videos were supporting Johnson and Johnson products which could be interpreted as bias, the information is credible base to the companies experience and reputation. The videos did not make a direct claim but states or implies the...

...27 September 2012 The Internet has evolved from a business use-protocol to a necessity at home and an invaluable tool to college students worldwide. Since the boom of the Information Superhighway, otherwise known as the Internet, anonymous credibility has been given to anyone with access to the Internet. Before the Internet became what it is today, college professors required the use of the library for research and encyclopedias for accredited facts from known contributors to today’s society. It is said that, “Once upon a time, Encyclopedia Britannica recruited Einstein, Freud, Curie, Mencken and even Houdini as contributors. The names helped the encyclopedia bolster its credibility.”(Stross 331) The new millennium of college students has since abandoned the gothic ruins of brick and mortar for modern technology. Hence, as an evolving community of college students, we must consider the use of websites such as Wikipedia for credible sources or not use them at all. The Internet contains a history of creditable sources. It also contains a legacy of anonymous sources. We have relied on the reviews and opinions of others to prove the validity of said information on the Internet and stop challenging it when we read the answer that strikes a chord in our cognitive judgments. If this process continues to be the norm, printed sources such as encyclopedias will leave people saying “This was written by one person? Then looked at by only two or three other people? How can I trust that...

...The topic I have chosen for this assessment is whether or not following a Paleolithic diet is really good for us. The basis of the Paleolithic diet is that if our prehistoric hunter-gather ancestors didn’t eat it, that we shouldn’t either. The sources I have chosen to use include informational articles found at thepaleodiet.com (http://thepaleodiet.com/about-the-paleo-diet/), a Uwire text/article - (http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?id=GALE%7CA364130430&v=2.1&u=swinburne1&it=r&p=AONE&sw=w&asid=c4d0f209e911ce4748ef9cf3946b329d), a YouTube video and its comments (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfLDioJzmIE), and a forum on Bodybuilding.com as another social source (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/what-is-the-paleo-diet.html?page=1). Thepaleodiet.com helped me learn more about learn about the health benefits of Paleo. I chose this source after a google search returned it as a result, and I was drawn to it as it appeared to be quite informational from its short description. This informational source is an example of constructivism through presenting information for the reader. At first glance this site came across as a potentially unreliable source – there was a presence of advertising. But further exploration started proving that this site was in fact reliable. According to Metzger (2007), credible online sources are ones in which we can identify the author and their credentials. In this case, the author is Ph.D. and professor of Health and Exercise Science...

...In the video, “Brilliant Public Speaking” the experts discuss how to effectively communicate with the respective audience. The topics of the week coincide with the video because how information is transferred in the common factor. The experts provide solid advice on how to deliver an exceptional speech all while keeping the audience entertained. Building confidence to deliver a speech is one of the practices that I need to work on when it comes to public speaking. I have become better at it, since enrolling at University of Phoenix however, at times my nerves still get the best of me. I have always been the type of person that prefers to be behind the scenes when it comes to completing tasks. I do not have to be in the forefront or limelight to feel appreciated. Some of the practices the experts gave seemed to be common knowledge, such as the dress code, eating properly, and getting plenty of rest in the days leading up to the speech. I would share the information I learned that was provided in the video. There were so many valuable tips to pass along. I would first advise the perspective speaker to understand the audience that the information is to be given. I would discuss things such as choosing the appropriate subject matter, how to overcome nervousness and make it work to your benefit, conferring with the sponsors regarding the proper dress code, and how to practice the speech in the mirror prior to delivery. In conclusion, it is imperative to prepare for a presentation...

...using logos, is an effective approach to convince an audience, the appeal to ethos is also another important and effective classical appeal that Gladwell uses to communicate with his readers. Gladwell appeals to his audience through the use of ethos by creating credibility and using credible sources. When Gladwell cites a credible source, "The way a lot of these laws are written, pit bulls are whatever they say they are," Lora Brashears, a kennel manager in Pennsylvania, says. "And for most people it just means big, nasty, scary dog that bites" (“Troublemakers”). Gladwell uses ethos show ethos because the author is quoting a kennel manger on her stand of how foolish it is to ban pit bulls. The kennel manager is obviously very educated in animals since it is her profession. Gladwell also appeals to ethos when he cites a credible source, “Randall Lockwood, a senior vice-president of the A.S.P.C.A. and one of the country's leading dog bite experts, told me …” (“Troublemakers”). Gladwell proves ethos because the author is quoting Randall Lockwood who is the senior vice president of ASPCA, along with being the country’s leading dog bite expert. By citing solid credible and important figures, Gladwell builds credibility and trust throughout his audience, better aiding him getting his argument across. Finally, Gladwell uses the third classical appeal, pathos to convince his readers of his argument. Pathos means to appeal to an audience by using emotion to create a response in the...

...learned some important information literacy basics from listening to the gentlemen talk about an overview of the Library, Internet and some wrap-up information. I also learned about some critical analyzing internet sources. I learned that the Library was designed for research papers, speeches, projects, and essays. Information that you find in the Library is usually credible information. That is different from using the internet because when you use the internet to find resources, you take a big risk using that information as credible. You should also look on the internet, when you find a source that you were researching on, to see if you can find factual information within the other sources that you are looking at. Also, when you are using the internet for research purposes, there are no trained specialists available to help you if you should need any help. When you are using the internet you should use these strategies for your search results: 1. Always keep in mind what you need to find or locate 2. Examine the URL 3. Examine the synopsis or short description of the site 4. Bookmark sites that look useful to you 5. Examine the related searches list You should have strong information literacy skills while using the internet. You should also check for accuracy and credibility of any research you have done. Music or pictures that you have downloaded for your own personal use or for school projects cannot be used unless you pay or cite the music, as they are protected by...

...benign the fact that the material was stolen. Bloggers must become educated about copyright infringement and fair use. When unsure whether they are committing copyright infringement, they should refrain from using copyrighted material. Although it is common knowledge that blogs are the opinions and points of view from various people, bloggers themselves should not deliberately spread false information. Furthermore, the opinions in blogs should always be easily identified, as well as the facts. Bloggers may not have the responsibilities of journalists, but they have the responsibility not to steal or mislead followers. Bloggers should have enough integrity to preserve the credibility in their discussions. If the topic that is being discussed contains false information, then the entire blog loses credibility. Bloggers may not be news reporters, but they must pride themselves in their ability to use the news and current events to spark educated and meaningful...

...constantly changing, affecting the credibility of websites used as research material. With the students using the internet and web- based technologies, it is important to have the right innovative tools to gain experience in determining credible information on the websites being researched. Today’s online universities have developed new strategies for determining how to access the credibility of an information source, by creating their own library, which contains’ credible sources. I. The article and research done by Hong is considered current and discusses how important Internet and web- based technology is currently being used as a learning tool and how students can determine websites credibility and how the use of Internet is increasing when doing research. ...Initial Post I conducted a search on pain management using two different databases, CINAHL with full text and Academic Search Complete. I also searched the same topic using the popular search engine, Google. I used the key the words “evidence-based” and “nursing” for each search. The articles on CINHAL Plus with full text and Academic Search Complete are peer reviewed, written and edited by professionals, for health care professions, and not for the lay person (Schmidt & Brown, 2012). The articles were specific to the key words entered. With the medical terminology used, these articles would be very difficult for a lay person to read. When I searched using Google I came up with thousands of results. Many of the suggestions were not at all what I intended and some just gave abstracts and not full texts. Not all of these websites were from a credible source or written by credentialed authors. I would advise the lay person to be cautious on which sites they visit. Wikipedia and WebMD are very popular sites by non-clinical individuals and patients should be reminded these are not reputable sites. I would inform them that gathering information is a good idea however, they should discuss the information they have found with their physicians. They should also be aware the information they choose should be written by knowledgeable authors and should be current (Schmidt & Brown, 2012). References Schmidt, N. A., & Brown, J. M. (2012). ...Method of detecting Anthrax Whether its natural or man made The key to meeting the challenge is to approach it in a systematic, comprehensive way. We must fully examine the biological threats we face, address the capabilities we must continue to build in order to mitigate them, and consider the complex legal and ethical issues that will arise during a biological calamity if ever we have one. They seek to cure, vaccinate, and alleviate suffering. Yet that is only one part of what must be done during such a crisis. If there is one lesson that the 7 years since 9/11 should have taught, it is that advance planning is the only way to respond to a major threat to safety and security. threat awareness and detection, prevention and protection, and response and recovery. First, we must search for signs of laboratories across the globe that could be poised to weaponize materials. For the 91 million people who come to the United States by air, or the 411 million who arrive by land each year, we can screen for incoming nuclear or radiological devices, but it is pure fantasy to imagine medically testing all of them as well. If we had credible information about a pandemic brewing elsewhere in the world, we could redirect flights and aircraft from the affected region and screen their passengers more intensively. So screening can be of value, but not without the intelligence that lets us focus on those individuals who might pose a genuine risk. Detection depends...
