Ismael Nazario spent three hundred days in solitary confinement at Rikers Island Jail before he was even eighteen years old after experiencing that he now dedicates his time advocating for prison reform and helping former inmates reenter society. By starting off his speech with a foundation made up of his own personal experiences and stories it allowed Ismael to get the audience’s attention. Once he has the audience’s attention, Ismael is able to introduce the true topic of his speech which is the problems prisoners face while in prison and how said problems can possibly be fixed. Some of these problems include guards with a lack of proper training when it comes to interacting with prisoners who are adolescent or have mental illnesses, very few programs that help inmates…show more content… Throughout his speech Ismael keeps a good tone that is easy for the audience to hear and understand, but he does stumble over his words a couple of times most likely because his thoughts are being produced faster than he can say them. There are also several times throughout his speech where Ismael looks at the ground which can cut off his connection with the audience. The speaker also uses several hand motions while talking. Some of these hand motions help get his point across such as when he was talking about fighting a C.O. he makes a hand motion resembling a belt to show how the C.O. removed his belt in the story. He also makes some hand motions that aren’t important, can be considered distracting, and might cause the audience’s attention to shift from what Ismael is saying to what his hands are doing.
