By focusing on the narrative’s two main characters, analyzing how foreknowledge effects their characterizations presents an understanding as to how this supernatural element facilitates the conveyance of moral messages. In form of Krimhild’s dream, foreknowledge appears comparatively early in the narrative. During her protected childhood, this princess has the dream that reveals a heartbreakingly metaphorical incident. On the surface, it unrelatedly displays the image of an ill-fated falcon being killed by two eagles: Living surrounded by splendor Krimhild dreamed a dream: she had a trained falcon, glorious, strong-winged, fierce, and wild, and a pair of eagles tore it apart in front of her eyes. ...Bishop Elizabeth Bishop is known as an original, and influential American poet. She had sixty-eight years of life experiences to fill her poems, before her death in 1979. Bishop won many awards throughout her career including the famous Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and best of all; she was the Poet Laureate of the United States from 1949 to 1950. Graduating from Vassar College in 1929, her first few poems were published while she was a student (Poets.org.). Though she continued writing poems till the end of her career, she also was a published short story author. One of her first published short stories was included in the book, Questions of Travel. While Elizabeth Bishop’s poems focused her life, they also were about her impressions of the physical world. Many of her poems are studied throughout schools, one of the most popular being, “The Fish”; which I studied throughout my education twice. I wouldn’t consider any of the poems I have read by her, “easy reads”; in fact, I would consider them fairly complicated and would require most students to use Sparknotes. Both characters in these stories were brave and daring and shared some heroic qualities but they held individual traits as well that made them distinct and one of a kind. Beowulf is depicted in the self titled poem to be adventurous, brave, strong, determined, and willing to take any challenge. The poem focuses on three main battles that help the audience determine his character; his fight against Grendel, his victory over Grendel’s mother, and his defeat with the fire breathing dragon. In these confrontations you can understand that he was a hero, a guardian, and a protector. He rescued those in need by conquering whatever was threatening them. One example is shown when Beowulf is introducing himself to King Hrothgar. He says, “ I battled and bound five beasts,/ raided a troll-nest and in the night-sea/slaughtered sea brutes. I have suffered extremes/ and avenged the Geats” (420-423). Here he explains that he has done heroic deeds to protect his people. ...Minimizing Interruptions Facts: Although some interruptions are signs of involvement and interest, and other s are genuine requests for information, interruptions are rarely appreciated. When you cut others off, the speaker thinks that you don’t care about their ideas or that you believe your ideas are better than theirs. When you interrupt, you may be perceived as rude, egocentric and controlling – someone who believes that what you have to say is more important than other’s ideas. Strategies on how to cut back interrupting: Count to three after the speaker seems to be finished. Concentrate on what the speaker is saying then paraphrase it back when he/she is finished. When you catch yourself interrupting, apologize and ask the speaker to continue. Ask another co-worker to count the number of times you interrupt in a day.
