In the short story Marigolds by Eugenia Collier the author conveys a reflective attitude regarding the changes that come with adolescence.
For Lizabeth’s coming of age story Collier uses meaningful imagery. When Lizabeth describes the marigolds she says “rose suddenly and shockingly a dazzling strip of bright blossoms”(Collier,3). This was something unfamiliar to her, so she couldn't understand it. Therefore Lizabeth developed jealousy and hatred towards the marigolds. After she destroyed the glorious flowers she had a moment of truth, “ from the bright thing that I destroyed in a blind, childish striking out at God-knows-what”(6).
