Fire and Ice In the poem “Fire and Ice,” by Robert Frost, everyone seems to have their own opinion on the message Frost was trying to convey. A poem not structured by fact, but of opinion. Throughout the poem, Frost uses metaphor, imagery, and little bit of alliteration to convey his message. Frost was implying that the human nature could lead to the destruction of mankind. There is also an interesting anecdote in Frost’s personal history that might explain why he chose this motif for this poem. Harlow Shapley claimed he inspired Robert Frost to write “Fire and Ice meeting with a great American astronomer Harlow Shapley the year before the poem appeared (1920), Frost asked how the world would end and Shapley said either the sun would expand and Earth would destroyed in a conflagration (fire) or it would die and the Earth would freeze solid (ice). With all of these influences, its small wonder that Frost wrote this philosophical gem or that it took the form it did. (Hansen) Frost begins his poem briefly describing his opinion on how the world will end. Fire is greed and desire while ice is cold hatred. Whether it shall burn in flames or freeze over forever on. The next two lines then followed by the word “I” which more emphasizes the factor of opinion. Along, with opinion, it also creates a more personal and emotional effect that helps connect with the reader. Between the same two lines that contain the word “I” Frost mentions his opinion on how the world will supposedly end, “From what I taste of desire I hold with those who favor fire” (703). The word desire is being compared to fire, and like a fire, desire, or greed, spreads rapidly and demolish everything in it’s path, until there is no more left to burn. Frost then goes on to mention the alternate option of the world’s end, ice. According to Frost, “but if I had a perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great.” In this quote, Frost mentions a second chance of life. The second chance indicates the possibility of the world not ending from desire, but of hate. However, the sense of desire may be leading into the end first, if there was a second chance hate would and could easily take over. The final line of the poem is far the most important line because “and would suffice” means to make adequate or equal. Frost is implying that no mater what happens, the end would be sufficed, or equal. Whether the world ends in fire or ice, the final outcome will be the same corrosion of humanity. The Criticism on “Fire and Ice”
“Frost is a master at making simple words say profound things. Here, he takes an idle daydream, a whimsical (albeit slightly dark) musing, and converts it into a telling insight the destructive power of desire and hate, fire and ice respectively. The metaphor is apt, and powerful: just as fire and ice and may one day destroy the external, physical world, desire and hate destroy the internal, spiritual one”. Very gnomic, and very Frost. (Thomas) Overall, the beginning Frost implies that there can be only a single choice between fire and ice, to recognize the requirements by acknowledging that both elements could successfully destroy the world. The symbolic elements say that too much fire and passion can quickly consume a relationship, while cold indifference and hate can be equally destructive and they both can destroy. Fire and ice defines isolation, from society.
However, Frost personal experience is more emotional, associating passionate desire with fire and hatred with ice. This poem is not defined because it’s about two subjects that are not answer, which the reader needs to come to their own conclusions. Work cited

The main themes in this movie are the plight of the medical community dealing with research, government response to research and social alienation in health care. And the Band Played on

...The film "And the Band Played On" was a very graphic portrayal of the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. It vividly depicted the medical, social, government, and political forces behind the AIDS epidemic's origin and rapid spread. It tells the political as well as the scientific struggle that occurred with the discovery of AIDS. The main character, Dr. Don Francis, heads the research of AIDS with little money and little help. The reason for the lack of funding was because AIDS was considered the “gay man’s disease” and there was more emphasis on who discovered the disease rather than actually helping those who had it. This movie was about the government and many other individuals being ignorant and looking the other way because homosexual males were seen as a lesser priority and an inferior group. CDC officials ran into a large barrier during their investigation; homosexual men refused to allow themselves to be submitted for testing, and the tracing of their sexual encounters. The CDC took a very long time to trace the spread of the disease to a single person, who turned out to be a homosexual flight attendant who was extremely promiscuous with other men. This was a large accomplishment at the time, but was only a small success in the process as a whole. Other major factors impeded the progress of effectively handling the epidemic. These included the initial lack of interest by media and politicians...

...and the Band Played on

...“And the Band Played On” Film Analysis “And the Band Played On” was a very informative film. It follows Dr. Don Francis, from his involvement in the Ebola outbreak in Africa to his work on the first cases of AIDS in San Francisco to his departure from the CDC. It provides viewers with the truth about the discovery of HIV and AIDS, shedding light on the cover ups and lack of concern of numerous government officials in the 1980s. I found the film to be an eye-opener, providing me with a history lesson on AIDS while showing me just how corrupt people can be. The Facts I learned a great deal about the disease and its beginnings that I probably never would have known had it not been for the film. Before viewing the film, I was unaware of the details surrounding the discovery of AIDS. I knew that it was a growing concern during the 1980s and that it was mostly linked with homosexual males, but I did not know anything specific. From the film, I learned that the first case was a woman in 1977 (Pillsbury, Sanford & Spottiswoode, 1993). Though I was aware that AIDS was never a disease that only affected homosexual men, I still found this surprising. Bathhouses were also a major concern during the AIDS crisis, which I was also news to me (Pillsbury et al., 1993). I was unaware that bathhouses where many gay men met others for anonymous sex were so commonplace in San Francisco in the 1980s, let alone that there was a push to close them because of their role in the spread...

And The Band Played On Analysis

...According to the movie And The Band Played On, the development of the first cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was greatly neglected by the government due to numerous factors, some of them was the belief that it was mainly a homosexual infection, along with the conservative nature of the presidency. After seeing the impact the disease was having in certain communities in the country, the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) decided to research and develop methods of prevention and control for HIV and Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome (AIDS). As stated in the movie, the three sociopolitical factors that influenced the policy development of prevention and control for the disease were: Firstly, it was the fact that AIDS could affect anyone, not just homosexuals. The disease was initially ignored by the authorities because of the belief that it only affected a minority of the population, homosexual males, and it was transmitted through unsafe sexual practices. The CDC was engaged to discover more about the infection, but lacked funds from the government, which invested only in the military instead. However, soon other cases started to appear. Newborns, Haitians, heterosexuals, hemophiliacs all started to develop the same classic signs and symptoms of the disease, and that was...

I chose to attend this performance for my concert report because I wanted to see and hear DVC’s jazz bands as well as learn more about the music department there. The first piece that I will talk about is a funk song called “Get In Line,” composed by Gordon Goodwin. This piece was performed by the DVC Jazz Ensemble. “Get In Line” had a variational form (A B C A D A B1). The beginning of the song began with an introductory melody that repeated at the (A) points in the song. The (B) part is a different, yet similar melody to (A). As the...

...different bands. This Jazz Combo was performed by the University Of Louisville School Of Music and was held in Bird Recital Hall. These bands included the Clark Terry Combo directed by Tyrone Wheeler, Terence Blanchard Combo directed by Ansyn Banks, and the Fats Navarro Combo directed by Ansyn Banks as well. One of the bands that I enjoyed the most was the Terence Blanchard Combo which was directed by Ansyn Banks. This group consisted of Jon Driver who played the saxophone, Doug Finke who played the trombone, Hanks Evans who played the piano, Will Kinman who played the bass, and John Walther who played the drums. Most of the performers were young but the older men still kept up with them and made for a great performance. The band itself felt comfortable playing their instruments, but seemed a little timid when it came to actually performing in front of everyone though. They were confident in what they were doing, but just seemed like they were a bit nervous in the beginning. The energy with each other was a little sluggish at the beginning of their performance but picked up midway through the first song and continued to increases as they performed their second piece of the night. They all got into their instrument and you could really feel the passion they had for playing it as well. The Terence Blanchard Combo, as well as the other bands, played two different pieces. The first piece they played was called “Strollin’” and composed by Horace Silver. The saxophone played by Jon...

Sartell High School Analysis

...October 17, The Sartell High School Wind Ensemble played three pieces in the Sartell High School gym. The songs that were played are “Imaginarium”, “Buenaventura”, and “Baba Yetu”. I will be evaluating the wind ensemble's articulations, balance and blend, and dynamics. The first song that was played was “Imaginarium”, and that is a program that tells a story about dreams. There was great articulations in the trumpets, and two different trumpet parts could be heard and could have balanced better. In the low brass melody in the section “Sparks”, it was very rushed and made it sound muddy. The whole song was rushed up until m.25. Starting at m.25, the eight notes in the trombones were clean and short. In m.33, the piccolo and flutes played a clean melody that gave a soothing feeling. There was a quick crescendo into a fortissimo in the middle of m.44, but the articulations caused it to happen. The transition into the section “The Cloud Factory” quickly slowed down and stay precise throughout all the parts. M.71 was played accurate but very out of tune, and that was the same in the trombones at m.92. In the section “Here there...

Socio-Political and Economic Environment

...Unit 5 – Socio-Political and Economic Environment March 11, 2012 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to identify a cultural artifact that best represents the society in which we live today. This paper will analyze in detail the jazz saxophone. This paper will examine its origin, it development, and its roots in American jazz. This paper will also explore the changes this artifact will have on future generations.   Socio-Political Economic Environment If there were a single cultural artifact that this represents the culture in which we live, today that artifact would be the saxophone or as it is known to most musicians as the jazz sax. The saxophone and jazz are synonymous with a culture that was developed in the United States in the early 20th century. Although this instrument is enjoyed by people all over the world and is used in all forms of music today, it is best known as an integral part of jazz music (The-Saxophone, 2012). Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in 1838 in Belgium. Sax was the son of an instrument maker and by the age of six, was an expert musical instrument maker (The-Saxophone, 2012). He produced such instruments as the flute and clarinet and learns to play them by testing the ones he made. Sax studied both instruments at the Brussels Conservatory. As a skilled musician, Sax was aware of a tonal disparity between certain instruments. He noticed that there was a disparity between the strings and wind instruments and the...

...Arts. The director of the band was Soojin Kim Ritterling. The performance was called "Samulnori", which means "four things playing." These four things refer to the four instruments used in Nongak. The first song played by the Korean band was called "Tego Sori" by Soojin Kim Ritterling. The song started out with a bang as the bass drums were played. Then, other drums joined the bass drums. This combination of the two different drums playing together had a really good beat and rhythm. The beat started picking up pace after the two drums played together. The song sounded good as it changed it's speed, rhythm, and tempo quite often. The song ended just as it began, with very loud drums and a very quick pace. The next song was called "Yongnam Nongak." The song started off with gongs playing, and the rest of the band joined in, in sync with the gongs. They were all playing in unison and the song sounded good, as it had good range from higher pitched drums to lower pitched drums. As the song continued to play, I noticed that the bigger gong that was playing, controlled the beat and rhythm of the song. The song sounded as it if were a ceremonial song they played in their country. Then, the drums started picking up the pace of the song along with the gongs. The drums picked up the pace while hitting both sides of the drum. The combination of the gongs and drums together made for a very harmonious piece. Once this happened, the whole band started speaking Korean all...

...ballads tunes with occasional simpler forms of harmonies orchestrated and accompanied with some string instruments and saxophone (Frith, 12) Catalina’s Jazz Club in Hollywood is the best place to be every weekend to enjoy some of the best jazz music in US. The type of music played here is one of the best rated jazz music globally. Some of the best performers here include; Gary Taylor, Charnett Moffett and Jack Jones jazz band among others. As usual, the weekend of 27th June was no exceptional, Jack Jones band was competing with a new band in town called Ron Carter trio band. Both bands are led by Jack and Carter respectively. Jones performed some of his newly composed music jazz genre, and he tried convince the whole crowd why he wanted his band to be recognised the best band in jazz music. His music was well orchestrated and organised with most of the instrument tuned to their right tune, played in the right keys and rhythm. Indeed Jones band members tried to remain on the right keynotes always throughout the music play. However, there rose a problem when the saxophone player went off key, perhaps it was because of a change of song since it was a three-music nonstop competition. Ron Carter trio band, led by Carter, was as well on its right step to fight for their best position in the whole arena of jazz music. The team was similarly organised with all the instruments arranged in a well choreographed manner to produce the best synchronised music and sound that could make them...

Classification of Rock and Roll Music

...lives with happiness and sadness. Sometimes it makes us mad. Sometimes it makes us want to dance. It has been around since the invention of man. The love of music starts at a very young age and continues into adulthood and old age. Whatever type of music you listen to is your choice. There are many types of music to choose from. There is Country & Western, Rhythm & Blues, Rap and Hip Hop. There is Jazz and Big Band style music. And lastly but by far not the least is Rock & Roll. Everywhere you go you can hear these types of music. You can hear it in the local shopping malls as background music, and in the churches being sung by the choir or the congregation. You can hear it on your radio at your home or in your car. You can even hear it at your favorite night club being played on a juke box or by a live band. The style of music I listen to is Rock & Roll; therefore, it is what I will be talking about in this essay. Rock & Roll got its start in the 1950’s. It is comprised of Country & Western, and Rhythm & Blues, but played at a much faster upbeat tempo. It was made popular by people like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley, who is considered to be the King of Rock & Roll. Rock & Roll music became popular amongst the younger generations, the teenagers and the young adults, but it was despised and hated by the parents of these teenagers and young adults. They considered it to be a bad influence. Some even believed it was...

Special Blend Concert Report

...Fullerton California at a bar named the Slidebar. The bands that performed were Livication, Special Blend, and the main performance was by Brewfish. These bands are all of the reggae/rock genre with Brewfish also containing a little alternative and pop as well. The Slidebar’s setup is very organized having a stage down a hall in the back room separated from the bar, which makes for a decently spacious event for a bar. The Slidebar’s purpose was and is to provide local college students that make up a big part of the area in downtown Fullerton with good music and a hyped, yet still relaxing environment. I feel that the Slidebar as well as the bands did a fine job bringing a good environment and in turn making the whole venue a big success. I believe the event was effective because of the bands that were chosen to play for the type of crowd that usually attends at this particular bar. This bar typically features rock and punk style bands...

Concert Report

...Concert Report: 1 I attended the College Campus Community Band in the Picotte Recital Hall at the Massery Center for the Arts at the College of Saint Rose on December 7, 2010 at 7:30 P.M. The concert hall was just about filled up with a rather enthusiastic crowd on hand. The audience consisted of older people ranging from the ages of 30 to around 70. Everyone who was in attendance was casually dressed in nicer street clothes. The overall feel was really relaxed and everyone seemed like they were enjoying themselves as the night was beginning. The performers were all dressed in black shirts and pants and were very relaxed despite having a performance. The performers were on stage practicing before the performance began and when they were finished they came down to see everyone in the crowd mostly parents and relatives. The concert hadn’t even began yet but you could tell it was going to be a fun night overall for everyone in attendance. The music I enjoyed the most was a piece by Antonin Dvorak called Largo from the fifth new world symphony. This was a classical piece because it was created around the late 1800’s. I really enjoyed this piece of music because it was one of four movements and it was really relaxing to me. When I was listening to it, I felt really happy and I was into the piece and it really caught my attention. The band was medium sized and the mood was to me felt exciting. The band really played it with a sense of happiness. I was really happy when I was listening...
