...Emeri Acosta Mrs. Aileen-Mata English 4 AP “Four Skinny Trees” by Sandra Cisneros “Four Skinny Trees”, by Sandra Cisneros is a chapter taken out of her book The House on Mango Street. The book is about a girl moving to a different house and hoe she doesn’t fit in. There she also encounters different situations that make her become a mature girl and see things in a different perspective. “Four Skinny Trees: is full of literary terms, personification which Cisneros uses to help Esperanza become stronger. First, “Four Skinny Tress” is about a girl who wishes to be strong and away from the place she is recently living. She comforts herself by imagining that the trees understand her. She see’s that tree’s having the same characteristics as her; strong and will grow anywhere no matter the circumstances. The significant thing about the trees is that they are growing in concrete. Concrete is very difficult to grow on and instead of making something grow it traps it. This is exactly how Esperanza feels due to the fact that she has moved many times in her life that she now can grow anywhere and develop new survival skills. Both the trees and Esperanza are sick of where they stand, but develop the strength and courage to keep on growing. Secondly, Esperanza says that the trees understand her; she gives personification to the trees as if they were her friends and family. She also says that she can hear them. Esperanza describes the trees as if they “grab the earth between their hairy...

...Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts by Jonathan Franzen “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is an essay by Jonathan Franzen. The essay was published May 2011 inside The New York Times. It is based on his speech at Kenyon College, Ohio, USA. This essay is about the contrast between peoples love for technology and real life. A very new and common expression is called “Like”. This originates from the social website, Facebook. This is mentioned as ”commercial subculture’s substitute for liking something. ”. Our parent’s generation has expressed popular terms. It is understandable, as we are entering a modern age, where everyone wants a little taste of this new world of technology we are entering. They are representing our era and the obsession with the Internet, smartphones and other things that contribute to the construction of our massive shield of technology. A lot of people use social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. to express their emotions. It is an effortless way to hide from the actual issue and emotions that are inside you. Jonathan Frenzen thinks, that people have a desire for consumer technology. It gives them a different point of view, which in a way satisfies them, without giving them anything at all. It is a contrast to an actual relationship with a boyfriend or a girlfriend. The author, Jonathan Franzen, has a very creative and different way of capturing his readers. He makes this essay very interesting for the younger generation, as...

...Clayton Howell Dr. Carolyn Schmidt POS 2041 11/26/14 Assignment 3 Obama’s Immigration plan that he introduced recently has many citizens outraged. This plan that Obama announced will change how immigrants live and work in the United States. Immigrants will no longer have to “live under the radar” and never fear deportation again. Obama claims that he will use his executive power to enforce this system and plan. There are many guidelines to debate with this plan, along with health care, social security, and jobs that immigrants may receive. I agree with Ander Crenshaw as he called these actions unconstitutional and the president refuses to listen to the public. Because I do not agree with Obama’s plan I have created a group who will take political actions against the Immigration Plan. Because Obama refuses to listen to the public, though I am sure most of the United States has no clue about this plan, I will make it known through media. So our political group would go about a public meeting and generate letters to send to local news or newspapers. Creating this special interest group could seek power by participating in volunteer work throughout the community would draw Television reporters to our meetings and hearings and hopefully raise awareness of the Immigration Plan. The outcome I think could be huge enough that the public would help spread this plan making other groups and people against Obama’s plan. I believe once everyone hears that approximately five million...

...AComposition[edit] "Story of My Life" is a mid-tempo, guitar-driven folk-pop song with influences of arena rock, alternative rock and neo folk. It runs for a total of four minutes and six seconds. Idolator compared the song to the works of Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Mumford & Sons.[1][4] Critical reception[edit] The song received positive reviews from critics. Sam Lanksy of Idolator called the song "surprisingly great" and noted it was a "mature midpoint" between the group's signature "rollicking pop-rock confection[s]" and "dreary ballads". Lanksy additionally called the song "merciful" and complimented it for using alternative-folk influences without "smell[ing] like spilled beer".[4] Amy Sciarretto of PopCrush gave the song 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a "contemplative, acoustic guitar-driven song" and complimenting it for being "more memorable" than any of the group's previous works. Sciarretto noted that the song would resonate with listeners of many different ages and showed that One Direction "isn't just a boy band"; although noted the song was not as "crazy catchy" as their previous songs.[1] Lauren Wheeler of TheCelebrityCafe.com gave the song 5 out of 5 stars noting that the lyrics were "reflective" and "much deeper than some of their bigger hits." Wheeler added that the song showed that One Direction "not only have range, but also have matured through their music."[5] Chart performance[edit] On 31 October 2013, the song debuted at number one on the Irish...

...Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, founded the Celsius measurement for temperature. Celsius and his partner, Olof Hjorter, discovered a connection between the northern lights (aurora borealis) and the magnetic field coming from Earth. As they continued studying they soon found out that the northern lights effected the needle of a compass. In 1733 Celsius published his findings with the magnetic field. Although Celsius is known for being an astronomer he did accomplish many other things. He was a very famous physicist, he did measurements for the Swedish map, and even evaluated nearly 300 stars with a system he created himself. The system uses two glass plates to figure out the magnitude. He then compares the magnitudes by how many glass...

...The conversation that I stumbled upon was with several people talking about how much each individual works and when they are on the road, how much they have to eat out and how much money is spent on this every day. I am going to give person number one a name of Brent, person number two a name of Chance, and person number three a name of Sid. Keeping this in mind; Brent told Sid that he was tired of eating out so much. He stated that he would rather go to a convenient store and grab some stuff to make. Chance came in to the conversation and agreed with Brent. Chance, then added to the conversation saying that there is so much money spent on eating out every day, instead of going out and grabbing a bite to eat, they would rather starve and save the money for when they do get to go home. More often than once; I hear this a lot of the time. What I would suggest to them would be to buy a small crock pot and small electric pan to cook meals, instead of having to eat out. This will not only save them money, but, it will allow them to eat healthier. I for one, would do just this in order to save all the money I could. Having to listen to conversations is something that would be to a surveyors advantage because the surveyor will be able to get valid information and may be able to put this information into a...

...Do you agree or disagree with this statement. Give reason to support your opinion: " The college years are the best time in a persons' life" -- To some people, retirement years are the best time in their lives. People needn't work hard 8 hours a day, go around the office all day long but still having enough money to enjoy fulfill their lives. However, others object that college years bring to individuals the experiences and worth remembered memory. From my point of view, my college time is the most excited and wonderful years in my life. A convincing reason for this idea is that college time is the base for us to have a better life. They fled because there was another alien race, called The Mogadarians, who took over their planet and destroyed everything. It was written as a teenage book should be. But there was something that bothered me with his...

...The Story of An Hour Because of Mrs. Mallard's heart condition, everyone basically tiptoes around her and treats her carefully. When her sister and family friend discover Mr. Mallard got killed in an accident, they take time to gently tell Mrs. Mallard that her husband has died. Mrs. Mallard cries her eyes out, then goes to her room to be by herself and locks the door.Inside, she seems terrified of some knowledge that's coming to her and finally realizes that it's her freedom. Even though she and her husband loved each other, and she's truly saddened by his death, she feels liberated and free for the first time. She looks forward to the days ahead instead of dreading them. While Mrs. Mallard is feeling complicated emotions, her sister keeps trying to check on her. Finally, Mrs. Mallard comes out of her room, newly resolved, and she and her sister start to go downstairs. Suddenly, the very not-dead Mr. Mallard comes in. When Mrs. Mallard sees him, she has a tremendous shock and dies. Firstly, I have to say that the storys’ language is clear. Everything is understandable. When I read , I really enjoyed. At the beginning of the story is dramatic. Maybe I just have a sick sense of humor, but I found the ending funny. I didn’t be worry. This is ironic. Obviously, how can woman be happy because of her husbands’ death or how can woman feel like a freedom? I don’t understand. If my husband dies, I can not throw it off for long time. But I believe that Ms. Mallard is not...

...Essay on Pro Global Warming I believe that Global Warming has been here since we first started using machines, which used steam engines or combustion engines. The first type of wheeling automobile was made in 1769 that is about 250 years ago. So since the first type of ‘car’ was invented so much time ago, then we can assume that there has been carbon dioxide, smoke and steam in the atmosphere. When this happens the atmosphere breaks into little holes, through those holes the rays of the sun pass through the atmosphere, and therefore global warming is created. This is how global warming is produced, it has been present since a long time ago, and what I just went through is the process of it. “People tend to focus on the here and now. The problem is that, once global warming is something that most people can feel in the course of their daily lives, it will be too late to prevent much larger, potentially catastrophic changes.” Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker, Apr 25, 2005. Kolbert, is a very successful writer, and she might not be known world wide, but she is very wise, because she wrote something seven years ago, which by now is becoming true. I feel that Global Warming is getting to a point that the whole world is about to meet him, because now only educated people know about it, and we must all know that global warming is real. As a matter of a fact one can see many reasons or facts to why Global Warming is real, and it is not only real, but also it is starting to get...

...Justin Dathan Anders Drewry, author of “HAMLET’S FATHERS: AN ANALYSIS OF PATERNITY AND FILIAL DUTY IN SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET”. Drewry emphasizes King Hamlet and Polonius' role in being a father figure to their respective sons and how King Hamlet and Polonius led Hamlet and Laertes to their own demise. Drewry begins his criticism between the connection of King Hamlet and Hamlet. Drewry criticizes King Hamlet as a character for having a poor paternal influence towards Hamlet. Drewry supports this by examining the quotes made by Horatio such as that King Hamlet was “a goodly king” (I, ii, 186), separating King Hamlet between his royal title and role as a father. Drewry suggests that since King Hamlet was absent most of Hamlet’s life when the Ghost...
