...Andrew Carnegie was born November 25, 1835. He was born in Dunfermline, United Kingdom. He was a Scottish-American industrialist who became a very wealthy owning an American steel industry in the late 1800s. Before accomplishing that he worked many different railroad jobs. He got his first job when he was only 13 years old, making 1.20 per week. Then around 1889 he became owner of Carnegie Steel Corporation, which was the largest of its kind in the world. After becoming the richest man in world he retired to pursue being more of a philanthropic person. He founded the Carnegie Institution, teachers with a $10 million donation and he also wanted to give money to support education and reading. While working for the railroad, Carnegie began making investments. He made many wise choices and found that his investments, especially those in oil, brought in substantial returns. In 1865 He left the railroad industry to focus on his other business interests. By the next decade, most of Carnegie's time was dedicated to the steel industry. His business, which became known as the Carnegie Steel Company, revolutionized steel production in the United States. The purpose of this article is to help practising managers understand better what strategy is about, how it has developed in the second half of the twentieth century from much earlier influences and the key contributions made by business schools, academics and consultants to the modern managerial practice of strategy. Strategic management has moved from a rational top-down planning approach, to strategic decision-making as a wider process involving all internal organisational stakeholders to ensure strategies are likely to be effectively implemented in practice. The recent rise of the resource-based approach to strategy helps us understand how two organisations with similar resources may nevertheless develop quite different levels of capability and performance. This article should help managers appreciate why no source of competitive advantage is likely to be sustainable over the longer-term. The two traditional issues involved with ethics: 1. Ethical Relativism – are there universal values that apply to everyone or is everything relative to individual, country, company etc. a. Relates to cultural relativism. This presumes that different peoples reason about morality varies by culture, education and religious traditions. b. Arguments for ER are: i. Empirical evidence of cultural relativism. ii. There is no viable universal standard that can be applied to everyone. c. Arguments against ER are: i. Just because finding universals is hard – that does not imply that ER is correct. ii. Just because a particular issues is not resolved does not imply that it is, in principle, not ever resolvable. iii. Taking ER to its full extent means that you can’t justify any moral judgements at all. d.
