...Definition of Gratitude Aesop’s fable “Androcles and the Lion” presents an extensive definition of the notion of gratitude as it evokes its several vital aspects. According to Aesop’s concept demonstrated in the fable, gratitude is the appreciation of the attention and assistance performed by any living being. The story highlights the need for will power in order to express acknowledgement in the most heavy and seemingly insurmountable situations. Aesop’s definition of gratitude is based on two primary concepts: remembering the good along with the notion of having enough will power to pay back decently to remain a profoundly noble creature. Firstly, according to Aesop, gratitude requires targeted strong-willed efforts, as it implies not doing something that would have been done in any other situation. “Androcles and the Lion” supports the forenamed assumption with the fact that the lion brought meat to Androcles and managed to restrain himself to do him no harm after they both were imprisoned (BPI, 2011). Secondly, it stresses the fact that any living being and Homo sapiens in particular are to be grateful to people and situations. In addition, Aesop’s definition of gratitude implies the understanding that gratitude is the only way to obtain freedom in this world. After spending approximately four hours there visiting the various exhibits, they decide to visit one final exhibit building. Although this building looked like all the rest at the zoo, it was set apart from the majority. Upon walking up the building, they spotted a large dog that seemed friendly at first. The dog nuzzled them and they made note of a small plastic device on the collar. In jest, the son made a snowball to throw at his father, inadvertently hitting the dog with it. The dog proceeded to attack Harvey and bit him four times on his right elbow causing lacerations that required twenty stitches. Upon investigation, the attorney for Mr. Woodley learns that the building in question is not an exhibition building of the zoo, but rather the private residence of the zoo groundskeeper (the dog belongs to Mr. Androcles as well). Although there were no posted signs that this was not part of the zoo, the defendant’s attorney maintains that they building’s residential status was obvious due to the electric fence – as evidenced by the collar on the dog. After all, the building looked like the rest of the exhibits, just a little farther set back. So they walked on the sidewalk to the next exhibit. At least four, however, concern themselves with evolutionary themes and ideas: Man and Superman, Back to Methusalah, The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles, and Far-fetched Fables. In Man and Superman, especially the third act, the preface, and The Revolutionist's Handbook and Pocket Companion, Shaw touches on two main themes: the pursuit of man by woman and the direction of evolution, which Shaw sees as leading towards the development of the mind and brain. In Back to Methusalah, Shaw carries forward his vision of evolution as proceeding in the direction of mental development but introduces a seemingly new idea in the last play of the cycle, the antithesis of mind and body. Shaw's dualism receives its most explicit statement in the last play of the cycle although there may be indications of it in the earlier plays. The mind-body antithesis, however, derives as a philosophical problem from Descartes,1 although the antithesis also appeared in the Manichean and Gnostic heresies, the spirit, or mind, being regarded as good and the body as evil. Although the antithesis of body and mind makes its first open appearance in the Methusalah cycle, it is present, at least as an implicit assumption in Man and Superman.
