Rocket History and exploring the future

My prewriting strategies I used were, research, and outline. My audience are teenagers and adults. My tone for this essay is being informative. My thesis is, although man has created many things, rockets are one of the greatest creations. My purpose for this essay is to educate people on the history of rockets, and I wanted to express why it is one of the greatest creations man has created. The horse and buggy were used to discover uncharted territories and now we are using rocket to explore the uncharted parts of space. This essay discusses the history of rocket fuel, past explorers of space, and the future opportunities in space. Although man has created many things, rockets are one of the greatest creations.
Rocket fuel has changed drastically over many years, the first documented rocket was by the Chinese in the fourteenth century, and its fuel was black powder (“History of rockets- Spread of Rocket Technology”). This was the start of something big. Later in history, in the year 1261, Roger Bacon perfected the formula for the rocket; instead of just using gun powder he added saltpeter, carbon, and sulfur (“History of rockets- Spread of rocket technology”). By perfecting the formula he increased performance by staggering numbers. As people continued to experiment with rocket, a man named Robert Godard, invented a rocket that ran on liquid fuel, this was a big step for rocketry, his rocket only flew 41 feet, but the more he experimented, the higher it got (Stern).
The pioneers in exploring space made it to different lengths in the space race. For instance, the first manned successful rocket launch was in April 12, 1961, by the Russians, his name was Yuri Gagarin; he made one orbit around the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft (“Human Spaceflight-History”). Two years later, the Russians launched the first woman into space, her name was Valentina Tereshkova, and she was aboard the Vostok 6, on June 16 1963 (“Human Spaceflight-History”). During this time, things were tense between Russia and the United States. We were in the greatest space race ever, it was a blow to the USA that Russia launched the first manned mission into space, but that was not going to stop us. Perhaps one of the most memorable space flights was when we landed on the moon. The men who were there were: Neil Armstrong along with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. When they arrived at the moon Buzz and Neil flew the lunar lander to the moon’s surface, Michael had to stay in orbit so that he could pick them back up when they returned (“Apollo 11”). I think everybody remembers this famous quote stated by Neil Armstrong, "This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” (“Apollo 11”). After their journey to the moon it was time to come home. They all returned to earth four days later on July 24 (“Apollo 11”).
This was a big turning point in the space race. Instead of just launching ourselves back into orbital space, we decided that we were going to go to the moon. We were the country that was going to take the next big step in space exploration. Had we not taken the risk, we might have never known what it was like to walk on the moon. Curiosity is what drives us forward, perhaps it's because we're going into the unknown not knowing what danger lies ahead.
Take a look at today’s rockets. We send robots to Mars, trying to find out if life exists there. According to the article, 200,000 people apply to live on Mars, it discusses how an overseas company is going to launch people to mars in the next decade (Landau). They want to answer the million dollar question, is there life on mars? Recently, the company that is going to launch people to mars had a sign-up sheet for anyone who wanted to go to mars. You didn’t have to be a doctor or have a PhD in science, the only catch is it’s a one way ticket, you would live there permanently.
I was inspired by the people that took the risk to go to space, and to the moon. It inspired me so much that I have decided to build a rocket that could launch a man into suborbital space. At this height, which is about 60 miles above sea level, you would be able to see the outer rim of earth and you would be weightless, until gravity takes you back down to earth (“Sub-orbital Spaceflight-Ballistics Missiles”). This project will take a few years to complete, but I have something to look forward to in the future.

Acer

...Acer’s PC sales in India slip in third quarter: Gartner Taiwan-based Acer Inc (宏碁) saw its market share slump in India in the third quarter, hurt by weaker demand in the country’s consumer PC segment, market research company Gartner Inc said. The struggling computer maker held a 10.4 percent share of the Indian PC market in the three months ending in September, compared with a 15.7 percent share a year ago, Gartner said in its latest report. The shrinking market share left Acer ranked as the fourth-largest PC vendor in India, down two spots from a year earlier. It was knocked out of second place by US rivals Dell Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co (HP), which took advantage of growth in the commercial PC sector. HP doubled its market share from a year earlier to 32.5 percent in the third quarter to seize the top spot, while China’s Lenovo Group Ltd (聯想) trailed far behind in second with a 13.7 percent share and Dell ranked third with an 11.8 percent share, the report said. Indian vendor HCL Infosystems Ltd rounded out the top five with a 2.8 percent market share. The combined desktop and mobile PC market in India totaled nearly 3.2 million units in the third quarter of the year, 7.9 percent higher than in the third quarter of last year, driven by large government orders, according to Gartner. “Consumers accounted for 40 percent of total PC sales in the third quarter of 2013 compared to 47 percent in the third quarter of 2012,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at...

Mobile Computing

...present day devices and their used as well as give some examples of what the future may bring in the way we compute in the future. Mobile computing past, present and the future Over the past years we have evolved into a new era of mobile computing, one that guarantees a wide variety in application, improved usability, and faster networking. Apple’s iPhone 5 is a prime example for the trends were heading into, but there are plenty of other options on the rise. Google Android made its appearance in 2008, offering a great alternative to apple devices. Apple had control of almost all computing systems since it was the only platform that could be used in mobile computing. Google brought competition to Apple allowing people to have a choice and the competition caused by this has benefited the user by giving them more applications and quicker processing abilities. Before the Apple and Android platforms there were many simple computing devices. Including ring sized abacus and at one time there was a simple computer that a cheater in Las Vegas put in their shoe to beat roulette wheels. These were simple...

Consumer Electronics Industry

...Consumer Electronics Industry: Tablets Over the next Decade 1. Introduction A tablet PC is a wireless, portable personal computer with a touch screen interface. The tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer but larger than a Smartphone. Bigger and Brainier than a smart phone but smarter and sleeker than a net book, tablet computers have revolutionized the way in which modern day consumers experience and fulfill their computing and communication needs. The credit of pioneering this field and creating the market segment goes to Apple with launch of i-pad in 2010 and once again proving its capability of a leading innovation driven firm which redefines the course of overall computer industry as a whole from time to time. Since then the tablet sales have seen unexpected momentum in terms of growth in sales figures worldwide with apple emerging as the largest supplier till date as compared to all others. However, Android based tablet PCs are expected to take over Apple’s share in the coming years. The world has seen aggressive competition among tablet PC manufacturers after the launch of iPad from Apple. Within five months of the release of iPad, Samsung launched its Samsung Galaxy Tab to compete with Apple. Since then, the tablet PC manufacturing industry has seen the emergence of numerous players. Most tablet manufacturers such as Asus, HP, and Lenovo among others released their models of tablet PCs in quick successions, but none...

Tablet

...Tablet computer iPad (1st generation), a tablet computer A tablet computer, or simply tablet, is a mobile computer, larger than a mobile phone or personal digital assistant, integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen and instead of using a physical keyboard it often uses an onscreen virtual keyboard. A tablet computer may be connected to a keyboard with a wireless link or a USB port. Convertible notebook computers have an integrated keyboard that can be hidden by a swivel joint or slide joint, exposing only the screen for touch operation. Hybrids have a detachable keyboard so that the touch screen can be used as a stand-alone tablet. Booklets include dual-touchscreens, and can be used as a notebook by displaying a virtual keyboard in one of them. An early information tablet concept, named the Dynabook, was described by a Xerox scientist Alan C Kay, in his Aug 1972 paper: A Personal Computer for children of all Ages, the paper proposes a touch screen as a possible alternative means of input for the device. The first commercial portable electronic tablets appeared at the end of the 20th century. In 2010, Apple Inc. released the iPad which became the first mobile computer tablet to achieve worldwide commercial success. The iPad used technology similar to Apple's iPhone. Other manufacturers have produced tablets of their own including Samsung, HTC, Motorola, RIM, Sony, Amazon, HP, Microsoft, Google, Asus, Toshiba, and Archos. Tablets use a variety...

Htc No Me-Too Products, Why Not?

...Summary To stay competitive in an ever-evolving landscape and in response to the emerging trend of mobile computing a decade later, HTC should introduce “me-too products” and join the tablet PC bandwagon. My research shows that HTC is likely to remain the major player in smartphone and tablet PC manufacturing if it follow suit. First, tablet PC category is fairly new, HTC does not necessarily need to sustain this “no-me-too” rule as long as its product concepts are no less innovative than the current offerings by competitors. Second, the 3G smartphone market is far from saturated. With HTC’s brand and R&D ability, HTC can vastly improve its market share. Third, Good artists borrow great artists steal--Pablo Picasso To implement and maximize the Me-Too Products strategy, my recommendations are as following: 1. Ensure the originality and creativity of “Me-to Products” • “Learn” from Samsung and “Steal” from Apple • Not necessarily price war involved, stay cool and stay stylish • Disruptive innovation—develop “Textbook” for students and “Solus” for the senior citizens. • Stick to Google Android system 2. Remain the pioneer of mobile computing a decade later • Keep the R&D intensity over 8 • Cooperate with both Google and Microsoft to develop products with Android and Windows systems at a ration of 2:1. 3. Transit from 3G to 4G • Develop the under-developed market, China and India, • Co-brand with China Mobile with a current 500...

New with Windows 8

...10 reasons Windows 8 will be painful for developers By Justin James October 24, 2012, 12:00 AM PDT Takeaway: If you plan to develop Windows 8 native apps, be prepared for some hurdles. Justin James looks at some of the biggest problems you’re likely to face. Ever since the release of the Windows 8 Developer Preview, people have had a lot to say about the experience of playing with the new OS. But few folks are talking about the changes it represents for developers. Windows 8 is the biggest update to the Windows development model since the move from Windows 3.X to Windows 95. While there are lots of good things, there are also a lot of pain points. If you are looking to develop Windows 8 native applications with the new UI and WinRT API, be careful of these 10 things. Editor’s note: This is an update of the original post, which published in December. 1: Market reboot If you want your applications to be fully compatible with Windows 8 (including running on ARM CPUs), you’ll need to do a full rewrite in Windows 8/WinRT. This may be great for developers looking to break into markets with established players. But if you are the established player, you are suddenly back at square one. 2: The asynchronous model Windows 8 development is highly dependent upon asynchronous operations for anything that is long running. While that may be a cute trick in some scenarios, it is downright frustrating in others (like trying to download a file). It isn’t just the work needed...

Classroom Tech

...Smart Technology for Smarter Kids Technology has proven to be a milestone in human development. It is only natural to want to incorporate this technology into our school programs and learning environment, and is now used as a means of instruction in the preschool, primary, and secondary classroom as well as beyond. Is it safe though, for the young, still developing minds of our future? These children, pre-school through primary, are around ages three- to eight-years- old. Many argue computers and other forms of technology have no place in the curriculum; whereas, the validity that teachers whom have incorporated it within the classroom feel it has enhanced the learning environment and overall, the students have developmentally progressed through documented developmental milestones at a faster rate than without the engagement of technology involved. Young children can be marked through developmental milestones; there are a known sequence of landmarks documented from childhood researchers and theorists. Exposure to certain disruption or not being correctly exposed to the applicable ideally guided assistance can prohibit these events from occurring (Feeney, et al, 2010). Technology exposure is inevitable though, especially within this twenty-first century. In addition to the introduction and development of literacy and numeracy skills and a strong emphasis on the shaping and improving of fine and gross motor skills, interaction and socialization are also key components to...

To Tablet or Not to Tablet – That Is the Question

...To Tablet Or Not To Tablet – That Is The Question Advances in technological development over the past four decades have created new opportunities and new ways to conduct business and explore the new channels of communication. Over the past several years, the growth in mobile technology and development of new advanced mobile devices such as smart phones and media tablets has increased the potential revenue of some businesses that have embraced the new technology and taken stops to secure a niche in the market. “Earlier this year, choosing the best tablet computer was as simple as knowing one model name: iPad.” (Consumer Reports). As of late August 2011, Apple’s computer tablet iPad and iPad2 represent over 61% of the market for tablets, leaving other companies such as Hewlett Packard laggin behind (Difference Engine: Reality Dawns). Simply put, it doesn’t matter if it’s the iPhone, the Macbook, or most recently iPad, everyone wants one, and if they can’t have it they want something as close to it as possible. It is important then, to explore what the iPad has that makes it the staunch front runner in the tablet industry. Not only has Steve Jobs of Apple Computers offered the world innovative and user friendly technological creations, with the release of each product, Apple’s success has forced its competitors to raise their stakes as well. Innovative, user-friendly, and in-genius are but a few of the many words that have become synonymous with Apple products. One of...
