...In Angels and Demons (2000), Dan Brown introduces Robert Langdon, the Harvard symbologist who would later star in Brown’s worldwide best seller The Da Vinci Code (2003). The two books share numerous characteristics. Though fictional, both novels claim to be built upon a base of researched facts. Both seek to revise aspects of generally accepted histories, especially those related to the Catholic Church and its relationship to free thought. And both books put Langdon in the middle of violent interactions among shadowy factions, clashes whose outcomes may well determine the future course of Western civilization. The two books differ in setting, threat, and focus. While The Da Vinci Code tackles ancient speculations about the Holy Grail, Angels and Demons involves more standard thriller fare. It puts science and religion into conflict by reviving the Illuminati, a secret society of scientists and freethinkers whose relationship with the Catholic Church has long been, Brown indicates, intimate, tangled, and not fully known. This secret society returns as a threat when the major church leaders are gathered at the Vatican to elect a new pontiff. Increasing this centuries-old tension is a more specific threat: the Illuminati claim to have stolen a rare sample of antimatter and hidden it somewhere in the Vatican. It is highly explosive if it comes in contact with normal matter, and it will do so when a protective magnetic field runs out in twenty-four hours. Add to this the fact that...

Characters Robert Langdon – a Harvard professor of religious symbology, that becomes a witness of the resurrection of an ancient secret society known as Illuminati. A very intelligent, sharp-minded, and a warm –hearted person. I really like this character because of his ability to understand the situation and try everything to help others. Quote: “Religions are not born from scratch. They grow from one another. Modern religion is a collage… an assimilated historical record of man’s quest to understand the divine.” (p 108) This quote represents one of the views on religion in this novel. As a man, that studied different kinds of religions all his life he looks at it only like another myth, but respects it’s influence on people. Vittoria Vetra – A beautiful particle physicist working in the world’s greatest nuclear research facility – CERN. She and her father had a goal to connect science and religion, by scientifically proving that God exists and almost succeeds in it. She helps...

...The discussion of good versus evil has been in debate for centuries. Within this debate the very existence of God is questioned. The movie Angels and Demons supports both of these thoughts by indicating that science is a presence in the church. The Illuminatie is a group of scientists that for centuries tries to destroy the idea of a God. They believe only in scientific fact and that there is no place in this world for faith or a God because they are unexplainable events in life. With the beliefs of the church under fire, they responded with killing members of the Illuminaties to protect their beliefs in “the name of god” This poses the conflict originally brought up, good versus evil and is there a God? If God is the ultimate good then he or his followers should never kill for the greater good of anything. However, a theist would say that without pain and suffering then there would be no virtue (Burr, Goldinger 139) If there is no virtue then the is no need for a God and no need for a group, like the church, to lead us down the path of good and wash us from our sins. The presence of evil is a necessity if you are to believe in God. As the Illuminatie’s seek revenge on the church for the injustice placed on their society they pick a time where the church is under stress from the loss of their highest leader, the Pope. The reenactment of the death of the Illuminatie members becomes a public display of evil. Pain and suffering on human beings, again, in the name...

...airliner included in the 9/11 tragedy were able to crash their plane before it reached its unknown, but surely, life-devastating destination. These were ordinary people were able to overtake armed, savagely trained terrorists. They were empowered by the hope of saving lives, which they did through their brave sacrifice. This kind of hope inspires many emotions and feelings. It allows people to convince themselves that what they want to happen will happen. This effect travels far beyond the mind. As hope strengthens ones mental ability, it allows a person to fully utilize him or herself. This hope is both a drive and inspiration. It works for positive and negative causes, but it does work to strengthen and empower a person. In the novel, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown, several characters are empowered by hope; a hope that is the inspiration that causes people to be all that they can be. Robert Langdon, a scholar of religious symbology and professor at Harvard University, made a life changing decision based on hope. Langdon was phoned by a total stranger in the middle of the night. This stranger, Maximillian Kohler, was demanding to see Langdon in person. Langdon rejected this demand, but he soon changed his mind after being sent a fax of a dead body. Branded on the dead body was an eerie symbol both unknown and familiar to Langdon. Langdon recognized the symbol to be the symbol of the ancient brotherhood of the Illuminati. Langdon, and other Illuminati experts alike, have spent centuries...

...Demon Freaks is the ultimate guide on how studying can go horribly wrong. Tomorrow is the start of the SAT’s and identical twin brothers Bing and Ron Slaughter need to achieve great results in order to make it into a top-ranked college and eventually pursue their respective careers or be doomed to spend the rest of their lives working for McDonald’s, the same company that their parents work for. The twins decide to study with their two friends and fellow Ephits band members; the keyboard player Kaitlyn Krimpsen and the drummer of the band Prathamesh Kimitri aka Meat. They meet up at Meat’s cabin and from that point on things go horribly wrong. The teens end up having to spend the night fighting for their lives against a medley of strange creatures and an entire Golfers Association. I give Demon Freaks a rating of 3 out of 4, I would give it a 4 but it feels as if the climactic part of the whole story was rushed. There were a lot of elements in play at the time but one move brought...

...Hindu Worldview Mildred Gates Liberty University Hindu Worldview There are a total of 900 million Hindus worldwide, making Hinduism the third largest religion. Hinduism has no founder or date of origin. While gathering information about the religion I found it to be a bit confusing and contradicting. Question of Origin In the Hindu worldview has several myths about creation.” One being that of the Cosmic Man, Purusha who was sacrificed by the Gods to create man.” (Rig Veda) It is very different from the Biblical worldview because there is only one creation account. In the Biblical worldview there is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. In the Hindu religion they have Brahma the Creator, Lord Vishnu the Preserver, and Lord Shiva the Destroyer. Question of Identity1 In the Hindu religion they treat all living beings from animals to the tiniest creatures with great respect. “According to Hinduism animals are not inferior creatures, but manifestations of God on the lower scale of evolution compared to man, each containing a spark of divine, capable of becoming human and achieving salvation like the rest of us.” In the Biblical worldview humans are more important than animals and one reason is that we use them for food and clothing. Question of Meaning/Purpose. The purpose of life in the Hindu worldview is to perform the proper sacrifices to the Gods. The Hindu religion has four universal goals or purusharthas that shape the meaning of...

...Wal-Mart: Angel or Demon? You Decide . . . For better or for worse, Wal-Mart dominates the retail industry. With annual revenue of more than $379 billion, Wal-Mart ranked No. 1 in 2008 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. corporations. Wal-Mart is also the largest corporate employer in the nation; with more than two million people on its payroll (only the federal government employs more people). But beyond the basic facts, general agreement about Wal-Mart ends. Supporters portray Wal-Mart as a solid corporate citizen that fuels economic growth, while detractors criticize every dimension of Wal-Mart operations. The key arguments: Wal-Mart supporters: * Wal-Mart boosts the standard of living for its customers by offering a plethora of quality products at the lowest possible prices. And by forcing its suppliers to become more efficient, Wal-Mart drives greater productivity and competitiveness throughout the economy. * Wal-Mart boosts employment in every community where it operates, offering excellent opportunities from the entry level through management. Demonstrating the appeal of its jobs, a Wal-Mart that recently opened near Chicago received more than 25,000 applications for 325 positions. * Wal-Mart revitalizes communities by building stores in economically depressed areas. In an interview with PBS, Wal-Mart VP Bob McAdam cites the example of Panorama City, CA: “When we came into that location, the mall that we're associated with there was...

...Rukhami, Case study #1 The following case study is about the most profitable investment, which should be recognized by the angels with help of different relevant and vital questions. Depending on the kind of the proposed projects, I would like to figure out the advantages and perspectives of each of them. However, I think that there are some fundamental questions to ask. It’s necessarily to be highly interested in a financial side of a project. That’s why the first questions I would ask are: “What is the estimated price to launch and maintain my investment? What is the predicted revenue? How profitable is it? How liquid is this suggestion? What is my biggest risk and how much can I loss in total?” The next step is to identify who is the potential customer, whether there are a lot of competitors or not, has this kind of business already existed before, etc. (questions to ask in every segment) Now, let’s concentrate on every proposition specifically. * Manufacture of small bottles of flavours. The flavours you can add to water or other drinks to get the taste you like. Having analyzed the detailed information about this product, I came to the point to start up my interview with clarifying “Why is it innovative?” “How much would one bottle cost?” “What would be the market price per one unit?” “Did a marketing research take a place? If yes, what are the results and what did the questionnaires show?” “Who came up with this idea and why does he/she believe in it?” “Which kind...

...Reflection Paper 2 Introduction: My second reflection paper will address the subject of Angels and Demons. Having little life experience with Christianity until being baptized in April of 2014, angels and demons were only in movies and not to be considered real or anything to really think about. Liberty University classes have opened my mind to a new world, church is not just for attending on Sunday and socializing with other like minded Christians but it is to contemplate a world beyond what is seen by man. Angels and Demons are real and with some serious study of the subject a person can see it all around and it having been all around since the beginning of time. Theological Definition of Angels: There are ten major theological areas of study and angels are part of that ten, this study is called “Angelology”. Scholars have many views about angels and some even ignore the subject all together but they are clearly documented in the Bible. According to Roman Catholic doctrine God is so powerful and at the sight of him a human will perish and that God created angels to serve as his liaison with the mortal world and act in God’s name, and since they do not have the tendencies of human flesh they serve as the bridge that separates the Holiness of God from the people of this earth. (KJV, Hebrews 1:14) Angels are essentially “ministering spirits”. Biblical Definition of Angels: Angels are mentioned in over thirty books of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. Clearly...

...Application Paper Introduction God created the universe and all his beings whether they may be seen by the eye or may they be superficial. Among such beings are Angels and Demons which have been present since the beginning of time and are under Gods direct control. Angels and Demons have been noticed of and spoken about in almost all religions and also in the new and old testament. Angels Theological Definition: Superhuman or heavenly being who serves as God's messenger. Angels have been mentioned almost 300 hundred times in the scripture. In the beginning they were part of the divine hierarchy and were created as beings ( Psalms 148:2) and (Psalms 148:5). Biblical Foundation: Though Angels have been mentioned a lot in the Bible and its relative books there biblical foundation stands questioned as no one knows when they were created, whether they may been created in the creation week or on the creation day. Though they have been present for all of eternity (Nehemiah 9:6 and Psalm 148: 2, 5), they have always worked for the betterment of mankind and have been delivering Gods faithful messages. Practical Application: Angels are referred to 108 times throughout the Old Testament and 165 times throughout the New Testament. Although the Bible does not provide specific figures, we are told that the number of angels are numerous (Daniel 7:10; Matthew 26:53; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 5:11). They are there but we do not see them most of the time, most of them are thought to be...

...Are Angels Real? Read This Story and Decide for Yourself An Angelic Encounter This is a personal story that happened to me. Some people read this and say that they believe I was visited by angels. Others say it is bogus. Read it and tell me what you think. The verse that corresponds to this first story is: Hebrews 13:2 - Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. I believe I encountered angels one day while on a bicycle ride. I'm not sure if God was testing me as the above scripture makes clear, but I am sure the meeting with these angels was not of this humanly world. I ride a road bicycle quite a lot. I used live out of town so my rides either headed back into town or way out toward the middle of nowhere on the highway headed to the next town. The highways of New Mexico are usually sparsely traveled. On this particular day, I was battling a headwind and it was a bit of struggle. I couldn't wait until I got out around 10 miles because the 10 miles home would be fast with the wind on my back. About 3 miles from home, I came up to the top of a small hill and noticed a white mini-van about 100 feet down the other side of the hill. As I approached it, I noticed that the young man standing next to the van had taken a badly deteriorated flat tire off the van and had his spare laying next to it. There were rubber and steel belts all over the place as the blow out appeared to be sudden and dangerous. I stopped...
