...What can HR managers learn from Angry Birds? Employee engagement has always been an area of ambiguity for HR professionals. This is one area which is very contextual and the research can conflict with evidence. This is one area where I have erred and paid heavily. But the point that I want to put forth he is that how can we understand engagement better by observing day to day phenomenon in the lives of people. One thing that struck me while playing a PC game was that how engrossed people get while playing games. Since I am also an amateur gamer, I myself have felt this feeling very often, especially during my Counterstrike times at TISS. My latest gaming obsession is Angry Birds. I am sure there are many people out there who love this game as well, but I have chosen this game to understand how engagement works with people. For the sake of common ground understanding, I have selected Angry Birds as a game for our analysis for the following reasons * It’s a simple and straight forward game which everyone and anyone can play without requiring to go through a steep learning curve * Angry Birds has a significant Male-Female following, I.e. many women also play angry birds as compared to other games like Doom or Halo. * Angry Birds has a wider player base with respect to age group How do games manage to keep people such highly engaged that they give it more priority than anything else? Let us try to analyze this from the perspective of a HR person. What do we do when...

...Jaqui Marec Eng 180 Dr. Barclay February 10, 2014 Can Video Games Really be Beneficial to American Society? In the article, “Just One More….: Angry Birds, Farmville, and Other Hyperaddictive Stupid Games”, the author Sam Anderson portrays how he feels about popular games throughout society. By providing numerous examples throughout the article, Anderson shows readers that there are deeper meanings behind the so-called video games we play that in turn interact with our psychological states of mind. He begins with the Game Boy that was created in Japan in 1989. He describes to the audience how the unit was made up and then describes the first game that was made for the unit, Tetris. Finally, he adds the purpose of the game and explains to readers why this game was considered addictive to anyone who played it. This in turn leads to the main purpose of the article, which was to convince readers that video games in fact can affect our psychological states of mind positively and even solve some of our real world problems. Anderson begins the article by talking about game-study scholars pointing out that games tend to reflect the era that they were created in. For example, he says that Monopoly was made in the 1930’s which was reflective of the great depression. Another example would be Twister created in the mid- 1960’s which was reflective of the “sexual revolution”. So how does Tetris pertain to this chain of game productions? Well, according to Anderson, Tetris was invented...

...So what constitutes a badly-built app? Verizon recently started rating apps on three key criteria: battery consumption, data usage and security risks. For now it is only concentrating on the Top 50 Android apps, but the guide provides useful insight into what Verizon considers best-practice standards for the key criteria. mobiThinking acknowledges there are more key criteria to creating a quality app, in terms of usability, device compatibility, stability etc – and that’s true – but arguably, problems with battery consumption, data usage and security risks are some of the most important of all quality assurance (QA) criteria because: a) they are mostly hidden from consumers; b) they are more easily overlooked by developers; c) the consequences are far reaching. Bad apps affect the performance of the device, battery and network; inflate the phone bill; and most consumers blame the device, operator… anyone except the real culprits. If the user interface (UI) is rubbish or the app keeps crashing, there’s little doubt the app is to blame and users will happily broadcast their verdict in their app reviews. 1) Battery consumption Some mobile applications use a lot of energy, causing unnecessary drain on the (already heavily taxed) device battery. There are numerous reasons why this occurs and, where it is caused by bad, ignorant or devious development practices, it can and should be rectified. Causes of battery depletion include: • Apps that run without the user’s permission...

...Mobile Marketing – The Impact of Mobile Apps on Lifestyle and Activities March 28, 2013 MBA 676-D4A3 – Marketing Strategies in the Digital Age Mobile Marketing – The Impact of Mobile Apps on Lifestyle and Activities Mobile phone applications (apps) have become a very powerful marketing tool for businesses. These downloaded apps assist the user in everyday tasks to make life easier for managing a hectic schedule, pass time while waiting in line or at the airport, make shopping more fun as well as make it easier to do business with an array of companies through their apps. The time spent on mobile apps has increased dramatically since the invention of smart devices and the iPad as well as surpassed time spent on the traditional Internet. Social networking apps are near the top of the list such as Facebook and Twitter (Roberts and Zahay, 2013, p. 307). Apps appeal to a wide variety of interests, lifestyles and demographic groups. There are many apps for fashion, sports and entertainment as well as location-based marketing for restaurants, shops, etc. (Roberts and Zahey, 2013, p. 452-554). What do I use on my Blackberry? Do apps really impact my life? Discussion I will turn 50 this year, so I am a bit old-fashioned and quite new to the mobile applications market. ...be busy, moving around their homes, or hives. So you might say you were “as busy as a bee” if you spent your weekend cleaning your house. In fact, you might say your house was “a beehive of activity” if your whole family washelping you clean. You also might say you “made a beeline” for something if you went there right away. When we go to see a movie, my friend always “makes a beeline” for the place where they sell popcorn. Here is an expression about bees that is not used much anymore, but we like it anyway. We think it was first used in the 1920s. If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was “the bee’s knees.” Now, we admit that we do not know how this expression developed -- in fact, we do not even know if bees have knees! If your friend cannot stop talking about somethingbecause she thinks it is important, you might say she has “a bee in her bonnet.” If someone asks you apersonal question, you might say “That is none of your beeswax.” This means “none of your business.” Speaking of personal questions, there is an expression people sometimes use when their children ask, “Wheredo babies come from?” Parents who discuss sex andreproduction say this is talking about “the birds and the bees.” Hornets are beelike insects that sometimes attackpeople. If you are really angry, you might say you are “mad as a hornet.” And if you “stir up a hornet’s nest,”you create trouble or problems. Butterflies are beautiful insects, but you would not want to have “butterflies in your stomach...

Recently, whether unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school has drawn extensive concern. Some aver that it benefits students, while others hold a different idea. As for me, I favour the former view. Obviously, unpaid community service creates many advantages. Initially , it provides many opportunities for students to cultivate themselves. More specifically, if students take part in this activity, they can cultivate their independence and responsibility by dealing with other things. Secondly, this item will enrich their social experience. To be more exact, students can learn what cannot be learned from books, such as the differences between communicating with pupils and communicating with the old. Lastly, they can put the knowledge from books into practice. More precisely, when an accountant calculates the data, he must consider...
