...accepted participant. While the outsider identity may be thrust upon the individual, the individual himself/herself may hinder his/her assimilation and therefore be the cause of his/her own isolation. In both Margaret Atwood’s poem collection Journals of Susanna Moodie and Maria Campbell’s narrative poem, “Jacob,” protagonists Susanna Moodie and Jacob struggle as outsiders in their respective Canadian environments. Both protagonists are outsiders as Moodie is an outsider to the wildlife environment of the Bush and Jacob is an outsider to his Indigenous community; however, Moodie’s outsider status is a result of her personal fear of the unfamiliar, while external societal forces create Jacob’s outsider identity. Both outsider identities, while differing in causation, illustrate the negative impact Western ideology has on the new settler and Indigenous populations as the former’s preconditioned Western beliefs turn Canada’s natural environment into an adversary and the latter is pressed to abandon its unique cultural traditions. Through strategic word choice, both Susanna Moodie and Jacob are established as outsiders in their respective natural and social environments; however Moodie’s personal barriers cause her outsider identity, while Jacob’s outsider status is forced upon him by societal factors, providing a commentary on the destructive impact of Western ideologies. Atwood manipulates words to situate Moodie as an outsider to nature as she writes, “The moving water will not...

This article evaluates the role of plant hallucinogens commonly used by Nasca and this culture’s belief system and ceremonialism. In more detail the article analyzes an image named “flying god of Paracas”, which is found on many famous embroidered cloths, this image is argued to be regional religious-political leaders who controlled aspects of daily life and the difficult ecological limitations of the...

...Consequences of Slavery As a freshman in college, having sat through many high school lectures about slavery and the long lasting effects it has left on the United. In, Frederick Douglass’ Slave Narrative, I was able to gain true personal insight from Douglass’ personal experiences and further my understanding of what all went into slavery and how it effected not only African Americans but Whites also. Slavery not only put a mental and physical strain on the oppressor and its oppressor but also the surrounding people who had to deal with it’s reputation and after effects. At the beginning of the Narrative, Douglass talks about his different accounts with his masters and overseers. He states that he had 2 masters and that the first ones name was Captain Anthony. Captain Anthony wasn’t a very rich master and he owned a couple farms with about 30 slaves in total possession. Anthony’s farms were mainly under the control of an overseer Douglass recounts as being Mr. Plummer. Douglass described him as, “a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster. He always went armed with a cow skin and a heavy cudgel” (50). I can’t help but think that these problems and rage were only intensified when he took over control of the slaves while the master was away. And Captain Anthony wasn’t a kind master either. Douglass recalls his first time, as a young child, witnessing someone being whipped by Captain Anthony and it engraved a memory into Douglass’ head that would leave a...

...1) I believe that although there is no dialogue or actors in this film, there is still a discernable narrative that guides the film. The first shots in the film are entirely of naturally occurring landscapes and phenomenon that occur on Earth. Although no dialogue is ever spoken, the music combined with the scenic nature shots create a sort of “build up” to the next element introduced to the film, humans. The narrative throughout Koyaanisqatsi, seems to be a reflection of the increasing impact that sentient life has on a planet. It is interesting, however, to observe which footage Reggio used to depict this mounting involvement of humans and technology into the plot. At first, I thought Reggio was attempting to make a statement about the harmful impact of environmental pollution caused by man. However, as the film progressed, the footage of technology and man seemed to play an indifferent role towards nature. The footage of factories and vivid time-lapse shots of city skylines at night are not portrayed in a negative light but instead in more of a chaotic one. In my interpretation, this chaos of the human impact on nature and the growing complexity of technology are depicted because that is simply how life has become for modern humans. Life is chaotic and the addition of increasingly intelligent beings trying to make order out of chaos will ultimately be futile. In other words, the very attempt at creating order out of chaos is chaotic in and of itself. The footage of nature...

...has about 6,000-10,000 members nationwide (The MS-13 Threat: A National Assessment ). This infamous gang – primarily made up of Salvadorans, Hondurans, Guatemalans, and other Central/South American immigrants – has ignited terror and havoc in communities throughout the United States by committing heinous crimes, such as drug distribution, murder, rape, home invasions, immigration offenses and many more. The notoriety of MS-13 and the level of violence that has ensured has captured the nation’s attention, as well as the president himself to which he has branded these gang members as “animals.” CNN and The New York Times have commented on the situation: CNN explaining Trump’s attempts to rid the nation of MS-13 members, while The New York Times described how Trump has exaggerated false claims regarding MS-13 deportation numbers. This current spectacle relates to Leo Chavez’s Latino Threat Narrative in the sense that the gang and criminal activity demonstrated by MS-13 is being associated with any person who crosses the border, and the immigration and deportation measures being taken is negatively affecting those entering the United States with good intentions....

...The Holocaust: Effects of Dehumanization in Art Spiegelman’s Maus War broke out in Europe in September of 1939. Everything went downhill from then, Germans began to take over and minorities such as Jews were quickly forced to go to concentration camps, these horrible camps were stationed all over Europe. One of the main camps in Poland was Auschwitz. Opened in May 1940, it was an extermination camp located in southern Poland in a small town named Oswiecim. The camp consisted of three separate camps not far from one another so that communication could be kept between them. These three camps included: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II–Birkenau and Auschwitz III–Monowitz. Auschwitz I was classified as the base camp where prisoners mainly worked, Auschwitz II–Birkenau was the main extermination camp where prisoners went to die in a variety of ways after being too weak to work, and Auschwitz III–Monowitz another labor camp, which held prisoners who worked at a German chemical factory, IG Farben. The killing methods ranged from being lined up at a wall and shot to being put into ‘showers’ that realized a toxic gas. Once the prisoners were dead, they were then burned in the crematoriums at the camp. Essentially the prisoners of the labor and death camps were treated as objects and not as the humans that they were. Many might even go as far as refer to the Germans as heartless for doing the things that they did to the innocent Jews and other monitories. Art Spiegelman’s Maus shows...

...because this film contains much information about political statements, philosophy, and religions. Children of Men tells the story of Theo Faron, one of the many bureaucrats from the energy department in UK. He seems like a common citizen, but does something uncommon later. In fact, the first thirty minutes is not quite interesting for me, but things has changed significantly after Julian is killed by shot. Later, Theo becomes a hero by rescuing Kee’s child, the child of miracle. This film has many advanced and significant aspects on many perspectives. So this paper is going to analyze the unique features in it. Narrative The story is located at the United Kingdom in 2027. At that time, human beings have experienced 18 years of infertility. Children of Men is a film with realistic narrative, because the story runs chronologically. And it follows the classic five-part narrative structure. We can clearly recognize the introduction: Theo hears the news about the death of baby Diego. Conflict and obstacles are throughout the story that Theo finds out Luke’s plan and helps Kee escape to “The Tomorrow”. Later climax comes with the ceasing fire of government army and revolt when they see Kee’s kid. And by the end of the film, we can hear kids laughing, which leaves us a hope that human beings can continue on. Meanwhile, this film contains many nondiegetic elements, which always attracts me and let me pause and investigate. At the beginning, the death of baby Diego comes from the news report...

...Lies pervade our surroundings,. Our society exhibits a preference for embracing falsehoods over confronting the somber or crucial truths. Would you prefer to learn that an hour of your existence has been forfeited due to unmet demands, or would you rather be assured that all is well? Consider the notion of an individual striving to shield you from the realm of deception and unveil the veritable world. This individual is none other than the Harlequin. While these inquiries may seem peculiar, they hold significant value for introspection. Society often shies away from confronting harsh realities, opting for untruths over stark truths. In the narrative of "TickTock Man" by Harlan Ellison, the marginalized stratum resists acknowledging their subjugation,...

...Cold hard evidence beats exaggeration in society's mind. Slave were treated like animals throughout the times of being attacked, beat on, and personal issues. Some of them were lack of education, and many broken families around slave communities. Night john gave more of a watered down more theater friendly version of these terrible years in the United States History. All of the hardships presented have been proven historically accurate due to supporting documents and how they corroborate to each other. Although Gary Paulsen's novel Nightjohn, is considered historical fiction, the description broken family structures, harsh restrictions, and cruel and unusual punishment can be corroborated with multiple sources provided by actual slaves at the...

...American perspectives.) In America, Akunna is lonely and desperate. She is exploited by her uncle and suffers from a sense of powerlessness. The new life in America: (leads to loneliness and desperation) : In “ The thing..” the narrator (Akunna) tries to build a new life in America but she endures a great deal of adversity and anxiety., She feels lonely, isolated, displaced and alienated . As Adichie suggests, this is a rather typical experience of Nigerians in America. She also feels anxious because she cannot adequately support her relatives in Nigeria as they would expect. Symbol: The ‘think around your neck” becomes a symbol of anxiety. Akunna is gripped by fear. She feels utterly powerless. She feels that she lacks control. p. 119 “At night, something would wrap itself around your neck, something that very nearly choked you before you fell asleep.” p. 125 “the thing that wrapped itself around your neck, that nearly choked you before you fell asleep, started to loosen to let go”. Firstly, what is she anxious/worried about? She is worried about her new life. She is lonely. She is not familiar with the western customs and lifestyle. Life becomes a battle for survival. The manager, Juan, offers employment but at reduced rates. Akunna has to battle against the stereotypical impression of Africans, who eat “all...

CHAPTER ONE Once There was a Time An Introduction to the History and Ideology of Folk'and Fairy Tales To begin with a true story told in fairy-tale manner: Once upon a time the famous physicist Albert Einstein was confronted by an overly concemed woman who sought advice on how to raise her small son to become a successful scientist. In particular she wanted to know what kinds ofbooks she sll ould read to her son. "Fairy tales," Einstein responded without. hesitation. "Fine, but what else should I read to him after that?" the mother asked. "More fairy tales, "Einstein stated. "And after that?" "Even more fairy tales. " replied the great scientist, and he waved his pipe like a wizard pronouncing a happy end to a long adventure. It now seems that the entire world has been following Einstein's advice. By 1979 a German literary critic could...

...Personal Position Paper: Environmentalism Caring for the Earth? Should Christians become Tree-Huggers? In today’s society, many environmental issues are being casually overlooked by the same people who constantly complain about them. It is an ever increasing problem that will eventually become irreversible if we Christians do not respond to the issue with definite action. The four key elements of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral provide strong evidence that God has called humans to make a difference in the environment. Several examples that are found in scripture, proven by reason, witnessed through experience, and guided by tradition aid in proving God’s desperate plea to us to care for the earth. By using the quadrilateral in its entirety, I will be able to provide sustainable information that will create a viable conclusion to why I personally believe that Christians should indeed become “tree-huggers”. What does scripture say in terms of protecting the environment? Scripture, the norming norm of all sources, is ultimately the main stemming source which provides moral guidance in helping humankind make wise decisions. It is an outlining source that answers many, if not most, of life’s difficult questions both indirectly and directly. As far as answering the question as to whether or not Christians should become “tree huggers”, several specific instructions provided in scripture are commands given from God to His followers to treat the earth and all the nonliving things within...
