Persuasive : We should be doing more to prevent animal cruelty. Everyday, all over the world, animals are mistreated and abused by incompetent, cruel owners; often just to satisfy human pleasures. We are supporting the abuse and ignoring simple rights that they should have. For instance, do you agree that a dog has the right not to have pain inflicted on him or her unnecessarily? Infuriating and heartbreaking: we are still standing by and allowing this to happen. It is even more sickening when we realise that, everyday, ignoring the cat down the street being kicked by its owner or selecting what perfume or make-up to buy in our favourite shop- we may actually be contributing to the abuse of animals. Whether, a neglectful owner or science technician, we must do more to reduce this horrible reality. A huge number of the domestic animals are suffering in terrible conditions. Domestic abuse is prevalent in all areas of society today. Millions of domestic animals never know a caring human touch and live hard lives on the street before dying painful deaths. The three most common pets abused are dogs, cats and horses. To put this into a shocking reality, in the year 2007, the internet source buzzle.com, declared that a dreadful 64.5 percent of dogs were reported with some sort of abuse, 18 percent of cats suffered at the hands of mindless humans and 25 percent of other animal species[->0] were reported to have undergone some sort of cruelty. This is in comparison to the total 47 percent of humans aged 16 to 59 who have suffered one or more types of abuse; discovered by NSPCC(National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). Since 2007 the number of animal cruelty cases has increased rapidly, leaving millions of animals in complete misery all over the world. There are different reasons why individuals may abuse animals; some do it for sick pleasure whereas others demonstrate this sickening behaviour as a result of domestic violence they, themselves have experienced. If the rates are so high and the range of abuse is so horrifying then why are we not doing more to prevent it? If these statistics shock you then you are proof that not enough is known and perhaps as a result done. Animal cruelty can be active or passive. Active cruelty implies spiteful intent, where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal. Among all the mistreated animals in the world, dogs are subjected the most to horrific cruelty. A major example of this cruelty is the brutality of animals used for sports, predominately dog fighting. Even with the legal ban, people are continuing to make these poor dogs fight for human wealth and satisfaction. From the very beginning of their lives, the dogs are exposed to a cruel daily routine. Horrendously, they are starved of food to make them violent and, additionally, beaten up and weighed down by extremely heavy chains to make them tough. In some awful cases, these helpless animals are forced to do exhausting, human exercises to make them fit enough to win the trainers their reward. In some instances, the trainers bait the dogs with animals such as small puppies or cats. Then, having been tortured and deprived, the dogs are forced to attack the small animals, resulting in their death. Furthermore, trainers force the dogs to keep fighting through injuries by provoking them with sharp items. To what extent in any person’s mind, is this acceptable? Why is this horrible, disgusting sport used for entertainment? Awareness is vital. In a recent investigation, a man was jailed for six months, ordered to pay £1,000 and banned from keeping animals for ten years for possessing fighting dogs and cruelty to animals. According to a survey done in late 2009, the total number of people arrested due to dog fighting per year is about 2,500 and has undoubtedly risen since. So with such a high number of arrests it is clear to conclude that not enough is being done to deter people. These poor animals are appallingly mistreated, and it has to stop.

5th November. A spectacular night for most. The sky punctuated by lights; screams at the sizzles; explosions in a dozen hues. Though for some unfortunate animals this can be a torturous experience as a result of cruel, mindless individuals subjecting these poor creatures to horrendous ordeals. Every year we hear incidents on the news of animals being badly injured or horrifically killed by ‘thugs’ who find being cruel to animals amusing! In 2009, there was an incident where a cat died after suffering terrible burns when thugs strapped a firework to her back and set it alight. Why anyone would commit this awful, malicious stunt on a small harmless cat? I’m sure any other sane person would agree. Equally worrying is the fact that these things happen every year. Yet, every year the government urges people to play safe with fireworks; presenting frightening scenarios of a child adding extra wood to the top of a burning bonfire, or holding a sparkler too close to their face. Accident and Emergency departments employ extra staff and ambulances on standby and we are urged to keep our pets indoors. Passive cruelty- neglect and abandonment is still equally a problem in our culture today. 27 percent of animal cruelty cases are categorised as ‘neglect’- making it the most common type of abuse. This statistic, taken from a website ‘Youth noise.com’, highlights the severity of the problem in society today. The question is, why are there still households with more pets than family members? Why do these people have pets when it is clear that they ignore their basic necessities? Maybe this is why we witness the occasional beaten up dog or the bedraggled, deprived cat aimlessly scavenging around for food when we are busy going about our daily routine. Very often, the person will buy many pets irresponsibly for their pleasure and then simply don’t provide adequate care for them: leaving them without food, water or shelter. In some cases the animal may have been deprived of necessary veterinary care or perhaps just merely been forgotten about. In many circumstances it is down to the caretaker’s complete ignorance and laziness that animals suffer as much as they do. It is absolutely sickening to think of animals been kept in such awful conditions. How could anyone mistreat or continue to neglect an animal that is blatantly skin and bones? The law states: “in order to protect animals from future harm, our priority in many prosecution cases is for people who are convicted to be banned from keeping animals”. With such a lenient punishment there is no wonder so many animals continue to get abused and neglected time and time again. More has to be done in order for improvement. Consider indeed the farm animals that some keep as pets. For instance, think about the horses that are so thin their ribs are showing. In 2008, the ‘Telegraph’ reported that “eighty-four emaciated horses, ponies and donkeys were rescued from a field, where they were discovered alongside 31 dead animals, in one of the biggest operations of its kind”. This appalling incident was due to the horrific neglect of these animals. The horses were extremely poorly treated. To me it epitomises similar examples taking place behind closed doors- not in open fields. The man responsible for this awful situation was rightfully arrested. Although in principle this is good, there are not enough examples like this to stop this horrifying reality. The ‘Shocking cruelty found in Indonesian zoos’ is only one of the headlines that reveals the disturbing truth behind the captivity of animals in zoos and circuses; places you would (wrongly) assume are saturated with people who have a genuine interest in animals. Neglected and subjected to cruel behaviour. This horrendous cruelty is happening more than society would believe. The ‘World Society for the Protection of Animals’ (WSPA) wrote an upsetting report after visiting ten of the zoos in Indonesia. They discovered that a staggering 99 percent of the enclosures were too small for the animals needs, 82 percent did not give animals enough space in their cages and 68 percent did not keep their enclosures clean. The animals were neglected so badly that they had to drink from dirty dishes and basically were starved of food and water. Some were chained to cages, whereas others were forced to entertain the visitors. This dreadful reality effectively demonstrates the horror that animals face every single day in some countries. Why has this not been dealt with before? How do zoos get away with this alarming conduct for so long, when hundreds of people visit it everyday? Alertness is key. Animal welfare groups are trying to move mistreated animals to animal rescue centres but with so much cruelty unidentified in so many zoos, a difference is not being made. The idea of a zoo itself is bad enough. Tourists pay to be entertained by extraordinary animals. However it only encourages the concept of keeping animals captive, depriving them of their natural habitat. What we must keep first and foremost in our minds is that in some zoos animals are denied their most basic requirements such as exercise, social interaction and bathing. Furthermore, birds are stripped of their most precious gift- flight. Although zoos try to create a resemblance to the animals’ natural habitat, they are still denied their freedom. The statistics prove that this is the norm in the majority of cases. From that we can conclude that not enough is being done. It is a major concern that people’s morals do seem to be slipping in society today and consequently animal welfare is one area paying a high price. The ill-treatment of animals through financial incentive, neglect and people’s entertainment appears secondary to the selfish requirements of the human race. As coexisting members of our planet we need to take positive steps to ensure these creatures have a quality of life equal to that of human beings. Such steps may include making donations to animal welfare organisations, or simply reporting any unusual behaviour directed at animals. These minimal efforts and contributions are guaranteed to make a huge change to some animal’s life and would certainly be more than we are currently doing.

...Animal Cruelty http://www.aspca.org/fight-cruelty/report-animal-cruelty/top-10-ways-to-prevent-animal-cruelty Here are some other signs and symptoms that we see in many of the cases we investigate: * Tick or flea infestations. Such a condition, if left untreated by a veterinarian, can lead to an animal's death. * Wounds on the body. * Patches of missing hair. * Extremely thin, starving animals. * Limping. * An owner striking or otherwise physically abusing an animal. * Dogs who are repeatedly left alone without food and water, often chained up in a yard. * Dogs who have been hit by cars-or are showing any of the signs listed above-and have not been taken to a veterinarian. * Dogs who are kept outside without shelter in extreme weather conditions. * Animals who cower in fear or act aggressively when approached by their owners. 1. Know who to call to report animal cruelty. Every state and every town are different. In some areas, you may have to rely on the police department to investigate animal cruelty; in others, you may have to contact local animal control or another municipal agency. ...1013.087 9 December 2010 Cruelty towards Animals and Their Rights If killing animals was entertaining to the people by abusing them and possibly causing them to fight, would you join the cruel humans that are doing this just to have fun watching animals fight and be abused? Animal cruelty comes in different ways from animal abuse, fighting the animals, and even mistreating them. Cruelty to animals is growing all over the United States even out of the US, especially dog fighting and cock fighting has grown dramatically. Animals used for other purposes are being abused more. The poor animals feel pain and suffer every time they are killed or mistreated. Even though my own father commits animal cruelty, still does not change the way I feel towards animal cruelty. My father thinks it is not bad to fight roosters, but I always tell him that fighting them is very cruel to the rooster. Two main animals used for fighting are roosters and dogs. They are trained and forced to fight each other to death, which cock fighters find interesting and gamble their money. Animal Rights and Human Obligations Second Edition, Ed. by Tom Regan and Peter singer, specifies the rights of animals, treatment of animals, killing and value of life of animals, etc. It has various authors on each specific topic that makes it more interesting. I argue that animals should be given their rights and not be tortured by humans for no apparent reason...

Animal Cruelty

...Animal Cruelty It’s dark, quiet, and you’re all by yourself. You whine and yell for help but nobody seems to hear you. The people you thought were your family abandoned you, left you all alone in a small confined cage. There is no place to use the bathroom, other than where you stand. The awful stench of your faeces grows worse and worse each second. The only food they left you with, you ate in the first day. Now the only thing keeping you alive is your desperation to eat and drink your own waste and the will to survive. You are a dog left to die by its owners, with the thought that you are lower than humans and have no real importance or worth. I have always been an animal lover and it has always disgusted me to see an animal being mistreated. Even when I am watching a movie and an animal gets hurt I always cringe with sadness. I remember I had these neighbors; we were good friends with them. They always wanted to have a dog but either they never had the money to take care of a pet or they just did not know how. That never stopped them from constantly having a dog. I remember two specific dogs they had, one was a mixed bulldog, Daisy, and the other was a Jack Russell Terrier, Jack. Daisy was such a beautiful sweet dog, but the way she was treated was poor. If they did not have any dog food they would feed her cereal and milk. They also considered spraying her with a hose while she ran around in the backyard a bath. The worst thing that happened to her was that one day...

Animal Cruelty

...Animal cruelty Recently a series of cat-abused cases had infuriated all walks of lives in Hong Kong. Actually the cases of animal abuse are rising unceasingly in these years. The former chief of Health and Food Bureau Dr. York Chow Yat-ngok(2011) claimed that it had received 534 complaints related to animal abuse in 2011,which was the three times of the 187 cases in 2008. There are three major causes lead to animal abuse. Firstly, it may relate to the broken childhood of abusers. According to an article, a former animal abuser, who killed three dogs when he was young, said the roaring of dogs always scared him when he was still a child. Therefore, when he grows up, he showed hatred towards dogs. A foreign psychologist revealed that a large part of animal abusers had the experience of suffering from domestic violence in their childhood. The hatred make them become abusive to others especially defenseless animals in their later lives. Secondly, there are too many stray animals in Hong Kong. Some volunteers feed stray animals regularly. Street animals then always gather on the street and lead to hygiene problems and aroused discontent of citizens. Thirdly, some immature teens abuse animals just for fun. It seems to be a trend recently that record the process of abusing animals and then put the clip on YouTube, and gaining the sense of pride by accumulating the clicks. To make it clear, before searching the solution of relieving the animal abuse problem, we need...

...caused uproar amongst millions of animal lovers. While this press undoubtedly raised awareness of the perils of animal cruelty, there are still hundreds and hundreds of cases that go unnoticed every day. For how loving and caring animals are to human beings, it is about time that we stand up to those who mistreat them and give animals the support they need and deserve. There have obviously been several animal activist groups over the years such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) but there is still so much we can do to raise awareness of this issue and make a difference. There are varying degrees of animal cruelty, however, one no better than the other. It is important to recognize each one and the motives behind the owner’s abuse because there needs to be different ways to handle these crimes. There is blatant abuse, such as in the Michael Vick case, where owners put animals in an atmosphere that is detrimental to their health and well-being. As for Vick, he bred and trained dogs to become vicious fighters as a part of his operation called “Bad Newz Kennels” (Schorn 1). CBS Sports Anchor James Brown asked Vick in an interview what had motivated him to continue to run this operation despite him knowing the risks and consequences of doing so (1). Vick cited that despite knowing everything he was doing was wrong, it was the competition and adrenaline that kept him in the business (1). The second form of animal cruelty can be best described as overall...

...individuals abuse animals. Animal cruelty covers a wide range of actions (or lack of action), so one blanket answer simply isn't possible. Each type of abuse has displayed certain patterns of behavior that we can use to help understand more about why people commit the crimes we encounter today. Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories: active and passive, also referred to as commission and omission, respectively. Passive Cruelty (Acts of Omission) Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself - however do not let the terminology fool you. Severe animal neglect can cause incredible pain and suffering to an animal. Examples of neglect are starvation, dehydration, parasite infestations, allowing a collar to grow into an animal's skin, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and failure to seek veterinary care when an animal needs medical attention. In many cases of neglect where an investigator feels that the cruelty occurred as a result of ignorance, they may attempt to educate the pet owner and then revisit the situation to check for improvements. In more severe cases however, exigent circumstances may require that the animal is removed from the site immediately and taken in for urgent medical care. Active Cruelty (Acts of Commission) Active cruelty implies malicious intent, where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes...

...Animal Cruelty ‘Humanity needs to respect all living things that we share this planet with, animals, the environment (WWF, 2012).’ However, animal cruelty has been reported in different parts of the world and has continued at a very fast rate. It is a growing problem that needs to stop. I have always loved animals, especially dogs. For this reason, I defend my belief that animals should be treated with dignity. One must ask, what goes on in people’s mind that leads to this type of heinous actions on animals? Where does the root of the problem begin? This paper will analyze the causes, signs and prevention of animal cruelty. There are two forms of animal cruelty. One is active cruelty that is deliberately inflicted to cause harm (CFAWR, 2010). The other one is passive cruelty which the harm inflicted through willful disregard, in turn generating into long-term suffering. Regardless of the kind of cruelty, the effects are pronounced in the animals. Those abusing animals are highly likely to perpetrate violent crimes against humans. Negative behaviors like animal cruelty emerge from traumatic past. Animal cruelty in this regard is presented as diagnostic criteria for determining conduct disorder. This disorder is found in people who abuse both animals and humans. Clinical evidence considers animal cruelty as one of the signs that are shown in the initial phases of conduct disorder, normally at age 8 (CFAWR, 2010). Most of the studies that have been carried out in the recent...

Animal Cruelty Laws

...Animal cruelty laws should be tightened in the United States because pet owners and companies around the country are still treating animals very poorly and using them in the wrong ways as test subjects for their products. Thousands of animals are abused every day and only half the time is something done about it. Animal cruelty should not be a small issue, it needs to be properly addressed. Animals that have been abused and neglected get stuck with long term psychological and sometimes physical effects. The animals become helpless, hurt and most times abandoned. Animals cannot communicate with humans like we do so we must be the voice to put an end to their abuse. Common animals that suffer from abuse, and domestic violence are...

Animal Cruelty In The United States

...Animal Cruelty In the United States alone, 7.6 Million cats and dogs alone are mistreated each day (ASB Google). This does not factor for any other domesticated animals, and does not account for the pets that are abused unknowingly. Animal cruelty is a very real issue, and is not being combatted thoroughly enough. Many people have the ideology that “it is just an animal,” or “animals do not have feelings,” and this is where many problems arise. Pets are real, living things too with feelings and emotions and acknowledgment. It takes a very sick-minded individual to intentionally harm or kill a living creature. One of the main reasons that somebody abuses a pet is because they are naturally violent in themselves (Missimer). Witnessing a vicious event during childhood or possibly being mistreated themselves can cause an adult and even a teenager to be aggressive and look for a cheap way to relieve...

Animals are being beaten and starved everyday and millions of helpless animals die each year because of heartless owners. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some of the most common forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment. Scientific research is a necessity of life, so it is said. The major problem with animal testing is the animals usually suffer in a traumatizing experience. Many animals endure burns, hair loss, rashes and gashes. Some companies go as far as to place metal wires and rods in the animal’s head. However, researchers justify this inexcusable treatment with “it’s for science”. Yet you have to wonder if scientists think how they would feel in that situation. There are many companies out there that do not use animals for testing their products. Yet these companies still have popular products that are bought daily by all. For instance the company Lip Smackers, sell all kinds of lip-glosses, chap sticks and makeup and they do not use animal to test their products.
