Ann Deever first arrives with Chris to, ideally, get a blessing from Joe and Kate, an action that serves not only serve as an acceptance to their marriage, but also as the bittersweet acceptance that Larry is not returning home. Primarily this acceptance would be most important coming from Kate for more obvious sentimental reasons, yet this is not a realistic expectation for one who clings to the faint shred of hope like a lifesaving rope. Eventually the need calls for Ann to show Kate Larry’s suicide note. Ann represents the ability for humankind to learn important lessons and to change, a decidedly ‘cruel to be kind’ role, as evidenced by showing Kate the suicide note and showing up Kate’s faith in superstition.
