.... For example her friends would have had to influence her to leave her month old babies at home while they go out to party. In addition to this they would have taught her the safest manner in which she would be able to leave her children at home. The fifth principle in this theory is as follows: “ The specific direction of motives and drives is learned from perceptions of various aspects of the legal code as favorable or unfavorable” (Siegel et al., 2013, p. 139). In Fujiis situation she was introduced to the homeless population when she lived in homeless shelters for small periods. During this time she met individuals and developed close and intimate relationships. The individuals in these relationships viewed “aspects of the legal code as...

...SOUTHERN RURAL SOCIOLOGY, 24(1), 2009, pp. 200–222. Copyright © by the Southern Rural Sociological Association DURKHEIM DID NOT SAY “NORMLESSNESS”: THE CONCEPT OF ANOMIC SUICIDE FOR INTRODUCTORY SOCIOLOGY COURSES PHYLLIS PUFFER BIG SANDY COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE ABSTRACT The definitions of anomic suicide presented in introductory sociology textbooks from 1996 to 2007 were compared with the definition given by Durkheim in his own writings both in the original French and the English translation. It was found that only one textbook correctly gave Durkheim’s own definition while the other definitions showed little or no relationship to the original concept. The original concept was based on an analysis of the economy, more particularly the business cycle, and refers only to the structure of society and not to the mental state of the individual. An attempt is made to discover the source of such a widespread and well-accepted error. All of us are concerned about the introductory course in sociology, no matter the august reaches of academe we might have attained. Nearly all of us have taught it at least once, if only as teaching assistants during our graduate school days. Some of us always teach it. The rest depend on it as a basis for their advanced courses, for a supply of research assistants, and ultimately to build public appreciation and support for the field. If we think of the number of students who take introductory sociology in just one small...

...Name: Shernel Alford Course: Criminological Theory Professor: Dr. Campbell Darden Due date: 5th November 2014 The American dream started with an innovative perception but as generations changes by it continuously changes whether it be materialistic gain or ones happiness. Thomas Wolfe said, "To every man, regardless of his birth, his shining, golden opportunity the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him." The term “The American Dream” has many understandings, but one of the most widely used is “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (Declaration of Independence1) which is the dream that most Americans strive for. The American dream is one that should allow you to control your own destiny and dream and this is what most or all strive towards on a daily basis. Personally the American dream consists of having a desirable job with adequate pay and with resources at your availability also not only having a dream home but to one’s comfort. The American dream also means living a healthy exultant life where freedom abounds so you everyone can be whoever they fantasize of being. Most importantly the American dream is where you have favour and success in your corner. According to anomie theory, the society that people live in has not provided adequate support or guidance for morals. Therefore, when there are not adequate paying jobs for these people available, then the dream of making enough...

...Emile Durkheim wrote about the concept of anomie. Anomie is when the state of normal behavior and societal norms, or how society is expected to conduct themselves, become unclear or confused. This concept was one that stated that when in a place of hardship, such as financial hardship, people were more likely to commit crimes, commit suicide or be otherwise “defiant.” Whether it is during an area of great hardship or great prosperity, anomie can occur. When jobs are hard to come by, and people are financially strained, they may turn to crime. It is possible that people are breaking into foreclosed houses, which are very prevalent in some areas, after the housing market crashed, and take the copper plumbing. They steal the plumbing and sell it for money. The houses are vacant, so the person breaking in might feel that they are not really stealing from anyone in particular. When Durkheim alleges that if we didn’t have deviants we would create them, I would like to present the example of marriage. In the early 1900’s marriage was a lifelong commitment, only to be broken by death. Since that time the divorce rate has gone up 700%! This is alarming, but divorce has become a very accepted deviant in today’s society. Of course there are some very rare times where there is abuse in the marriage and the spouse must leave because they are in fear of their life, and I am not referring to those instances. I feel that more often than not divorce is looked at as an “easy out...

...Social control is defined as the means and processes used by a society to ensure conformity to the group norms. This is very straightforward. How does a particular group keep one acting or be in unison with that group. The first group that I deal with is my work environment. At work I have a group of coworkers; we are part of a department within the company. How does this group keep me in conformity with what that group defines as normal? Well at my job just like any job I have responsibilities and duties that I have to follow and complete. I know that I have to follow this and complete my duties otherwise I am not conforming. To work is the normal thing to do at my work. My boss could take action such as a write up or a warning. These would be formal sanctions. Also, even if my supervisor did not give me any formal sanctions, my coworkers could start to treat me different if I stopped pulling my weight and not complete my share of work. I am part of a group in a department that serves a purpose for the whole. If I would go on a lot of breaks and take a longer lunch then I risk my coworkers’ stop talking to me. They would treat me different and make me feel as if I am no longer part of the group. I would not be a conformist now but classified as an innovator. This is because I do accept the goals the department is given. I feel that the department is responsible to carry out tasks and responsibilities for the whole. However, I am not participating. Meaning that I reject the means...

...Sylvia Rivera Urban Issues in a Global Context October 9, 2010 Extra Credit Assignment Anomic Communities An anomic community has no/ or does not take advantage of outside linkages, there is no sense of belonging to the community, and there is no tie to people within it. Rather, they are within the community for personal reasons and are independent of the community or people within it and the linkages outside of it. According to (Kirst-Ashman) “…an anomic neighborhood is dysfunctional and provides little social support. Anomie is a sociological that means “ social instability resulting from a breakdown of standards and values often involving “personal unrest, alienations, and uncertainty that comes from a lack of purpose or ideals. Despite residence geographical proximity, the feeling of being in a neighborhood does not exist. An example of such a neighborhood is a huge urban public housing project. Many residents may feel little identification with other residents yet have nowhere else to go. They may live in fear and the larger community may provide little support.” “Human Behavior Communities Organizations, and Groups in the Marco Social Environment, An Empowerment Approach” Kirst-Ashman, Karen K.: (2nd Edition, 2008) p293 The following is part of an article that details Jakarta, Indonesia is an example of an international Anomic community: “In Indonesia, the state under Suharto functioned as the patrimonial center of a patron-client network, distributing...

...1. Rational suicide is typically described when someone has a hopeless condition; it seems they have no chance of improving. They also must make the decision as a free choice, being in their right might, not being pressured by anyone. In order to complete rational suicide, they must go through a thorough decision-making process that involves numerous healthcare professionals to ensure they have a firm understanding about what they are doing and the impact it will have. The way that rational suicide and Schneiderman’s Death Initiators are similar is in the aspect of why they are wanting to complete suicide. Death Initiators intend to end their lives because the process of death is already underway, similar to rational suicide where the person...

...The significant difference between the three theories is the scope of extent measured by cultural norms, influence and association, which defines criminal behaviors of individuals. A key requisite to the social control theory requires an individual’s attachment and connection, developing a social bond that would mold a ‘behavior’ in support of a group’s morals. An example would be a population like Singapore, shaped by governance, cultural and social bonds that keeps people from committing deviant acts otherwise known as criminal behaviors. The social control theory suggests that individuals learn to abide to such behavior as a society norm. Differential association theory studies the immediate environment and social circle of an individual. Sociologists believe that three key contributing factors – influence, people association, and environment; promotes deviant behavior as a ‘justified’ behavior. The differential association theory can also be applied to a minority of outcasts who clearly deviates away from the society norms of the majority (social control theory) but thrive in the unique culture guarded with strong influences and associations. An example would be a secret society formed by a small group of activists that has its own cultural beliefs and school of thoughts that does not conform to the majority of the population. The differential association theory suggests that individuals learn deviance from strong influences such as parents or teachers, and the group...

...The Strain Theory Professor Jaske CRM 3407 15 February 2016 Thus, the Social Learning Theory appears to be the best theory to explain how people of different cultures and origins are able to co-exist in a ship since the theory gives credibility to the ability of people to live cordially as they learn a particular living environment or system. The Strain Theory does an excellent job of explaining white collar crime, along with the contextual anomie/ strain theory. While examining this theory, it was discovered as the most compelling in our constant battle with white collar and corporate crimes. Ever since the beginning of recorded history man/woman has tried to achieve a better life, but not much has changed in today’s standards, since it can be said it is more now than ever. From television, and radio we see the American dream of home ownership, the ability to fit into the society with the latest gadgets. At the same time trying to further their education has its roots in the American dream of more pay, a better job, and the ability to retire all these things is associated with the American dream of more money. While reading this theory I took a closer look into what fuels the human mind in our society. White collar crime in most cases, according to the Strain Theory and my own beliefs is what fuel the human desire to be successful. Greed has always and always will be a driving force in our society, I see no relief in sight unless we as a society find some way that...

...movement and a way to mock Christianity (Lee, Lois, and Stephen Bullivant). The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a parody religion that is nonetheless becoming quite popular. There are a few theories of deviance that can be applied to the Pastafarian faith. The first is Robert Merton’s Anomie Theory. He says that in society there are socially approved goas that each person strives for and there is a socially approved way of means to attain these goals (Adler, Patricia A., and Peter Adler). Pastafarians are ritualists, which means that they have abandoned cultural goals, but may or may not have socially approved actions. The next theory Adler and Adler discuss that can be applied to this group is the Differential Associations Theory by Edward Sutherland. This theory says that all behavior is learned, including deviant. In the case of the FSM, this behavior is learned primarily through online conversations. The last theory that can be applied to this group is Social Conflict Theory, which states that groups within society interact on the bases of conflict and each group aims to bring about a cultural change for societal equality. Pastafarians have fought and are fighting to get all of the same rights as all other legitimate religions. The combination of these sociological theories aim to explain the deviance demonstrated by the Pastafarian religion. In conclusion, Pastafarians are working, and in some places succeeding, on being internationally recognized and respected as...

We are aware that $40,000 dollars was dropped off at the house. Economic deprivation is a leading predictor that result in criminal causation. Court documents indicate that Devon Wint’s was a former employee at the American Iron Works where Savvas Savopoulos was the president and ceo. According to Messner and Rosenfeld, Devon isn’t able to achieve that American Dream, due to his social status and economic barriers. Mr. Savopoulos, is the example of the achieved success, as he is a white privileged male who runs a multimillion dollar company. Wear as Devon Wint’s is a...

...Scientific Inquiry Javier Bryon AIU Online Abstract By using the controlled experimental method we can prove or disprove hypothesis in question. During the experiment we can come to a conclusion on whether further experimentation is needed or other hypothesis need to be implemented to solve a question. Introduction Blue porch ceilings are quite prevalent along the east coast, there are many theories as to why, from keeping evil spirits out of the home to fooling spiders and wasps into thinking that the ceilings are actually the sky. Many old houses around the Victorian and Colonial era bear this color in their porches due to the popularity at the time, but even now the popularity of the color is prevalent. Besides keeping evil spirits from entering the homes and fooling bugs, the blue ceiling reminds the owners of the blue skies even on cloudy days. Hypothesis The blue paint used in the painting of porches of the Victorian and Colonial homes contains an ingredient that repels insects, a natural insecticide used in the popular paint color. Prediction If there is an ingredient that naturally repels insects in the blue paint then the results should be obvious. Painting two porches ceilings one with blue paint and another one with white paint should demonstrate that the one with blue paint is bug free during the time of the experiment. Controlled Experimental Method First three enclosures were built; enclosure number one ceiling is painted sky blue. Enclosure...

...Testing A Theory PSY/201 May 12, 2013 A couple of years ago, I decided to test a theory on myself by trying to lose fight while gaining more muscle mass. I have heard so many different theories on how to lose fat while gaining muscle mass, but I could not find a good routine that gave me the best results. Before I began my research, I had to think critical about what was causing me to gain fat, and why my workout routine was not as effective on myself as it was for others. I began to search for credible sources on the Internet, so that I can have a better understanding of the relationship between nutrition and the human body. Once my understanding on nutrition was clear, I then began to do research on fat burning and strength conditioning. After my research was complete, I began to test these theories on myself. I created a chart that kept track of each exercise, the amount of repetitions completed, weight loss or gain, and body fat percentage. I used this chart to compare my before and after results within 90 days, and the end results were stunning. I could lower my body fat percentage, and gain more muscle mass, which was exactly what I wanted. The type of informal research that was used to test this theory was experimental research. According to the textbook, Psychology and Your Life, it tells us about experimental research, which states, “Investigator produces a change in one variable to observe the effects of that change on other variables” (Ch. 1, pg. 33)...

...scientific method was trying to plant roses and trying to keep them alive. I would plant the roses and water them and even planted them in the sun. I would not try to figure out why they would keep dying. If I would have went through and tried fertilizer and tried to figure out why they kept dying then I would have at least came to a conclusion. If I would have found out how to take care of roses and then started to water them the way they are supposed to be watered and gave the roses the fuel they need to live they would not have died. I would have first seen how to take care of roses. Then I would have measured out the water and how much sun they needed and applied that then tested my theory I could have seen if they would have lived. If the roses had died after that then I would have tested other theories to see what works like trying to put fertilizer around the base of the rose bush to see if the ground was not the reason the roses were dying. If the ground does not have enough nutrients then the roses would not have been able to get the food it needed from the...
