Life is nothing without friendship. Everybody has friends, and people they love, but above all are the friends you love. The ones you’d do anything for. They’re the people who make life worth living. The theme of friendship and love is shown strongly in “Anthem” by Ayn Rand and “Long Live” by Taylor Swift. The book “Anthem” is about a dystopian society. Anything that isn’t done collectively is frowned upon. To have friends or to love is outlawed. Then Equality 7-2521 makes a friend and falls in love (not with the same person), defying society. It’s about triumph, and the people who helped her to get where she is now. This song also shows themes of love and friendship. Unlike Anthem, this book is about now, so friendship isn’t banned. However, it still shows similar friendships. In the song, Taylor sings, “Promise me this: that you’ll stand by me forever.” Many friendships do seem to last forever, but only if both friends want them to. Some don’t, and even though that’s alright, she’s saying that she wants her team to always remain by her side. After that, the song continues, “If you have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please tell them my name.” This is her hoping that, even if they drift apart, the fun times that they have together won’t ever be forgotten.
