The Federalists consisted mainly of the writers of the Constitution. These people, for the most part, were wealthier and had a lot of experience in bureaucracy. When they wrote the Constitution, they tried to find the best form of government for this new country, and they came pretty close. Since they were the ones who formed the government; they trusted the government, because they trusted themselves. I have no doubt that they had the right values in mind when forming the government, but they lacked foresight. They didn’t think they needed a bill of rights because the government was there to protect people in the first place, an additional document stating this wouldn’t be necessary. They weren’t really thinking about what might happen in the future when the attitude of the government might begin to change. These “Anti-Federalists” were actually more positive than their title implies. They simply wanted to prevent any kind of tyranny that might evolve in the future. The Bill of Rights did a very good job at placing a necessary mandate that the government had to abide by. They came up with certain rights that the government should never have any good reason to take away from the citizens.
With these rights eventually guaranteed to us, the Anti-Federalists could rest in peace. Also, if the Federalists could have looked into the future, I believe they would be satisfied with the way things turned out in the long run.
