...Evolutionary Diversification of Caribbean Anolis Lizards. In: Adaptive Speciation, eds. Dieckmann U, Doebeli M, Metz JAJ & Tautz D, pp. 322–344. Cambridge University Press 2004. c International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis Please cite as: J.B. Losos and R.S. Thorpe. Introduction. Pp. 322-324 in Adaptive Speciation, reference above 16 Evolutionary Diversification of Caribbean Anolis Lizards 16.1 Introduction Jonathan B. Losos and Roger S. Thorpe The diversification of the lizard genus Anolis on Caribbean islands surely represents one of the best-studied cases of adaptive radiation in evolutionary biology. Over the course of the past four decades, researchers have studied almost every aspect of anole evolutionary ecology. These include systematics; community, physiological, and behavioral ecology; functional morphology; ethology; and demography. Studies have been conducted in the laboratory and in the field, and have included basic natural history, geographic and temporal comparisons of populations, and a wide variety of experimental approaches to the study of phenotypic plasticity, ethology, ecology, and evolution [recent reviews include Losos (1994) and Roughgarden (1995)]. The result is an unusually broad and detailed understanding of the factors that promote and sustain evolutionary diversification and species coexistence. Speciation and adaptation in anoles Two conclusions from the current body of work are obvious. First, the genus Anolis has experienced extensive speciation...

Chlamydia Research Paper

...transmission is usually through sexual contact or from mother to child during vaginal birth. Sexually transmission could occur between a man and a woman through vaginal intercourse, a man and another man through anal penetration, or through two women via shared sex toys or oral sex, (insert citation). Demographics There are many factors that go into what groups of individuals develop which symptoms if Chlamydia trachomatis. Things such as age, gender, and ethnicity all affect who develops what symptoms. Gender and ethnicity can have a factor in the LGV strains of Chlamydia in that during the third stage many young white males develop arthritis, (book). A study taken in the Netherlands found that C. trachomatis was most commonly found within Dutch Antillean and Surinamese descent, (Verweij, P., 2014). Age and ethnicity of both men and women with Chlamydia trachomatis were very similar. The mean age of women with Chlamydia trachomatis was 24, while the mean age of men was 29. Another study in Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) took 15162 women and men ages 16-44 who reported at least one sexual partner in their lifetime and tested them for Chlamydia trachomatis. Around 60% agreed to STI testing. The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in individuals ages 16-24 years were 3.1% in women and 2.3% in men, (Sonnenberg, P., 2013). Risk factors taken into consideration in this testing were both area-level deprivation and higher number of sexual partners both with and without condoms. Of the percentages...
