Abstract I will talk about the movie Any Given Sunday in which Oliver Stone directed. I will talk about how Oliver Stone portrayed war on the screen onto the gridiron and into the world of professional football world. I will talk about how in the movie the owner Christina Pagniacci played by Cameron Diaz, does not see the players as people but as meat. How the business part makes her not feel for her employee's health or mental capacity and only looking at what they can do for me now.
Any Given Sunday When I sat down and watched Any Given Sunday director Oliver Stone really brought out the realism in the football world. In the sport of football you have people eyes glued to the game either by television or in person. You have men and woman young or old watching this sport as a gladiator going at each other like there is no tomorrow. Oliver Stone also shows all the sides in how the game has changed from a true sport into a cut throat business. Where players and the doctors don’t care whether they may be permanently injured as long as they can make extra money in the process. Which the move shows the team doctor Harvey Mandrake played by James Woods clearing defensive end Luther 'Shark' Lavay played by Lawrence Taylor to play. Dr. Harvey knows that if he gets hit or is hit could kill him or be brain dead from all the concussions he has received in his career. He does not mind taking that risk because the only thing he needs is to get his tackles in order for him to get his million dollars bonus. It shows how the game has been changed and molded by television, as we look at the sports announcers who really don’t seem to care about the game, only the ratings. It also shows the coaches and players who really do care about the game and its history with all the changes the game is going through. The movie starts right off with bone jarring hitting and unavoidable injury, which sets the mood for the film. You have the Miami Sharks that are on a three game losing streak, and it looks like they are about to lose their fourth. Then their star quarterback, Jack ‘Cap’ Rooney played by Dennis Quaid is hurt with a tremendous hit from the opposing team Dallas Knights. The backup quarterback on the next play was also hurt and taken out of the game. Then the head Coach Tony D’Amato played by Al Pacino looked down and calls in the third string quarterback, Willie Beamen played by Jamie Foxx. Who then went out on the football field and threw up from nervousness for which became his ritual performance and then after that he performed like a master on the field. In the process of all this happening you have the owner Christina Pagniacci the past owner daughter who took over from her deceased father gets on the phone and right away starts looking for a quarterback to replace starting quarterback Cap Rooney. This is where I feel in Lisa H. Newton Issue three comes about with “Is Increasing Profits the Only Social Responsibility of Business”, and from Milton Friedman he states “a business have neither the right nor the ability to fool around with social responsibility from profit-making. They serve employees and customers best when they do their work with maximum efficiency”. This shows how she was only thinking about making the playoffs and not any concern of her player, to see how he was doing because she knows that she can make more money in the playoffs from all the sponsorships. Then the second game came around and the second string quarterback was in the game and was not performing well in which Coach D’Amato called for Willie Beamen to take his place. He then was not performing well until Coach D’Amato had a talk with him to and told him to think back when he was back home where it all started. That is when it all started to click for him and then immediately he became a rebel, often changing the plays in the huddle, but his instincts brought his team out of their losing streak and gave them hope for the playoffs. This is what brings Frank J. Bonello Issue one “Are Profits the Only Business of Business”, because Robert Almeder “maintains that if capitalism is to survive, it must act is socially responsible ways that go beyond profit making”. When quarterback Willie Beamen started to look good people started to look at what he could do for them now instead of molding him to become a better person and teammate. In this same issue one Milton Friedman states “the sole responsibility of business is to increase its profits”, which is what the owner Christina Pagniacci was thinking about. Then you had Christina Pagniacci and Coach D’Amato began to clash with the future of the Sharks franchise. The owner wanted to trade Cap Rooney who was the leader of the team in which he brought them two championships within his career with the team. At the present time he was at home hooked up to a machine from which he just had a disc in his back worked on from the hit he received in the Dallas Knight game. Coach D’Amato wanted to trade running back Julian Washington played by LL Cool J, because he was only thinking about getting his yards on the field so he would be able to get his endorsements from Reebok. Right before Coach D’Amato came in to see Christina Pagniacci she was talking too two other board members about moving the team to Lost Angeles which brings up Newton Issue number five “Can Ethics Codes Build “True” Corporate Ethics?” I feel that the owner and the board members was trying to go around loop holes just to get what they wanted and not what was best for the team or city of Miami. How can they expect their players to want to follow them if they are sneaking behind everybody backs. Coach D’Amato then began to clash with quarterback Willie Beamen because he was trying to instill in him the sense of team and history inherent and the role of a professional quarterback. Eventually the team begins to turn against him because his head became bigger then he could hold from making his own video, making endorsements and the fame. Coach D’Amato was continuing to fight for Cap Rooney to play for which owner Pagniacci told him that his style of coaching was in the past and needs a new beginning. Then Coach D’Amato told her that in the old days when her father owned the team that he never told him what to do and let him run his team like he wanted to. To make a two hour movie move along Coach D’Amato got what he wanted with his quarterback back in the game for the playoffs. Right before the game in the locker room he gave this inspirational speech: “I don't know what to say really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today. Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble. Inch by inch play by play till we're finished. We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me and we can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of hell. One inch, at a time. Now I can't do it for you. I'm too old. I look around and I see these young faces and I think I mean I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make. I uh.... I pissed away all my money believe it or not. I chased off anyone who has ever loved me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know when you get old in life things get taken from you. That's, that's part of life. But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff. You find out that life is just a game of inches. So is football. Because in either game life or football the margin for error is so small. I mean one half step too late or to early you don't quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They are in ever break of the game every minute, every second. On this team, we fight for that inch On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch. Cause we know when we add up all those inches that's going to make the fucking difference between WINNING and LOSING between LIVING and DYING. I'll tell you this in any fight it is the guy who is willing to die who is going to win that inch. And I know if I am going to have any life anymore it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch because that is what LIVING is. The six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You gotta look at the guy next to you. Look into his eyes. Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. You are going to see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows when it comes down to it, you are gonna do the same thing for him. That's a team, gentlemen and either we heal now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's football guys. That's all it is. Now, whattaya gonna do?” With that speech Willie Beamen became respectful of Cap Rooney and his years as a successful quarterback, and in return Cap Rooney became respectful of Willie Beamen. He began to realize his future of the franchise was ending and right before halftime he dove in for a touchdown which made him get hit and end his playing time for that game. Beamen got the go ahead call for which he came in the game and won the game with team work. To end it all the next game did not go as well at which time owner Pagniacci had hired a younger coach Aaron Eckhart played Nick Crozier the offensive coordinator. Then Coach D’Amato thanked the team and announced that a new expansion team had hired him to coach and gave him full control of the team. Then he announced that he just signed Willie Beamen as his franchise player. I also put in the numbers in which football today has grown into a business with:
The Chicago Bears Team Value $984 mil ,Virginia McCaskeyChicago Bears are owned by McCaskey family, who bought them in 1920 for $100. Player-costs-to-win ratio 8 211 2006 Coach Marc Trestman
Sport: Portion of franchise's value attributable to revenue shared among all teams. Market: Portion of franchise's value attributable to its city and market size. Stadium: Portion of franchise's value attributable to its stadium. Brand Management: Portion of franchise's value attributable to the management of its brand. Da Bears' fortunes on and off the field have improved dramatically the past five years thanks largely to a new stadium and the keen mind of President Ted Phillips, a former tax accountant who has been with the franchise for two decades. Phillips is the mastermind behind the team's new stadium, built in 2003, and the hiring of Jerry Angelo five years ago, who was the team's first general manager in 14 years. Under new coach Lovie Smith the Bears reached their first Super Bowl since 1985 last season and are now in the top eight in the league in revenue and operating income thanks to Soldier Field's 133 luxury suites and 8,500 club seats.

Any Given Sunday

...Janet Salguero Aaron Hillyard Writing 121 Video Essay 13, March, 2014 Essay # 2– “Any Given Sunday” Football has always been one of America’s favorite past time sport, a sport that has been around for 145 years and a game that is a religion to some individuals. “No guts, No Glory!” I remember my high school couch always scream out into the stands and the team cheering that same chant into the battle field. Football is a very intense and dangerous sport that young men play to hold the glorious title of “Winner,” seizing the opportunity to show off all their incredible football skills. In the movie, “Any Given Sunday” there is a famous scene were Al Pacino the head couch, gives a common but important inspirational speech to get his team all riled up and ready for battle. Giving the opposing team a run for their money and fight for every last inch they need to get to be victorious in the game. In every great sports movie there is always that locker room scene that gets the team pumped up for the win or lose game, with inspirational heart pumping background music. Making you feel like you are right there in the locker room, living in the moment and thinking it’s all or nothing at that very instance. The head coach reaching into each individual player’s soul and heart giving them that push to leave everything on that field to give everything they have, like it was a life or death situation. How many times have you seen that famous locker room scene and how does it make...

Any Given Sunday - a Sociological Analysis

...Abstract This paper explores the movie “Any Given Sunday” and attempts to discuss the movie in detail by focusing on character examples of the personal functions of sport such as feelings of belongingness and social identification, the socially acceptable outlet for hostile and aggressive feelings, and the role sport plays as a cultural element to bring meaning to life. Additional attention will be given to aspects of extra-sport character behavior and a determination of whether or not such behaviors support sport stereotypes and/or deviant characteristics. Through internet research, library study, and the use of periodical articles found in the ProQuest databases, I intend to apply the functionalist model of society to show that the fictional football team “The Miami Sharks” highlighted in the movie supports stability and equilibrium in the community of Miami based on common interests and convictions. The world of professional sports, especially professional football, is a world that most will only see on the television or through movies. “Any Given Sunday,” by Oliver Stone, is one such movie. It highlights a portion of a season for the fictional team The Miami Sharks with the interpersonal struggles on and off the field experienced by the characters related to the team. This paper explores the movie “Any Given Sunday” and attempts to discuss the movie in detail by focusing on the socially acceptable outlet for hostile and aggressive feelings, masculinity and gender...

Delivery Analysis of Any Given Sunday Speech

...In the climax of the movie Any Given Sunday, Coach Tony D’Amato (portrayed by Al Pacino) gives a riveting speech right before his team takes the field for their biggest football game of the year. The coach delivers the speech to his players as they all watch on one knee, eager to take the field. We, the television audience, watch from a distance, through cameras that pan around the room and give us the feeling of being part of the team as well. We also get the added effect of music that speeds up and slows down as the pace of the speech alters. The different shots of players and their reactions to the speech also help to subconsciously alter the way we feel. If we see a player with his head down in tears, we will feel pity. However, the use of different cameras to show the rising confidence throughout the locker room gets us, the audience, on board with the coaches message and we sometimes are even ready to take the field with the team. These effects dramatically enhance the impact the speech has on us viewers, and is an added dimension that cannot be created through live speaking. Coach D’Amato’s physical appearance parallels his message even before he starts to speak. His messy hair and open shirt with glasses hanging down portray a sense of tenacity and an obvious chip on the coach’s shoulder. He grasps his coaching papers in his hands, shuffling them, pacing around the room. His mannerisms show anxiety, nervousness; he is truly speaking unscripted and from the...

Al Pachino's Use Of Ethos In Any Given Sunday

...In the film "Any Given Sunday," Al Pachino walks into a locker room of disgruntled football players and proceeds to give on of the greatest halftime speeches of all time. Even those simply watching the clip become transfixed and, like the players, may be willing to run through a wall for this man. But what makes this speech so effective, so memorable? By analyzing the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, and distinguishing the type of argument(s), one can learn how Pachino came to deliver not only one of the best movie speeches of all time, but what some consider one of the best motivational ones as well. When on the topic of which argument is used, the argument can be made that this is an argument to convince. An argument to convince differs...

Problem 1 Print Media Advertising (Pma)

...com/shop/problem-1-print-media-advertising-pma/ Problem 1 Print Media Advertising (PMA) has been given a contract to market Buzz Cola via newspaper ads in a major southern newspaper. Full-page ads in the weekday editions (Monday through Saturday) cost $2000, whereas on Sunday a full-page ad costs $8000. Daily circulation of newspaper is 30,000 on weekdays and 80,000 on Sundays. PMA has been given a $40,000 advertising budget for the month of August. The experienced advertising executives at PMA feel that both weekday and Sunday newspaper ads are important; hence they wish to run the equivalent of at least eight weekday and at least two Sunday ads during August. (Assume that a fractional ad would simply mean that a smaller ad is placed on one of the days; that is, 3.5 ads would mean three full-page ads and one half-page ad. Also, assume that smaller ads reduce exposure and costs proportionately.) This August has 26 weekdays and 5 Sundays. The objective is to determine the optimal placement of ads by PMA in the newspaper during August so as to maximize the cumulative total exposure (as measured by circulation) for the month of August. a) Formulate the linear programming model for the problem. b) Use the Graphical method to find the optimal solution. Show all steps. c) Use Excel Solver to find the optimal solution. Copy and paste your spreadsheet and the Answer report in its entirety from Excel. ...learned in the past class that negotiation is very important for the success of any organization or any relationship. Also, we learned about the different kinds of negotiation. First, the Integrative negotiation which is you have some alternatives in order to make the deal. Second, the Distributive negotiation, it is that every person has an opinion and is sticking with it and you may use some cleverness before you make a deal. We used the Distributive negotiation tactic against our opponent. The game we played during class was whether or not we should close or open our store on Sunday. At the same time, if we closed and other team is open we will lose $ 40,000. But if both teams will open their store we will both lose $ 20,000. Then, we decided to open on Sunday. Also, the other team did the same thing. I think our choice was right because we guaranteed that we will not lose more than $ 20,000. In my opinion, if we negotiated with our compactor, it would have been helpful. Maybe we could have reached a great deal. Such as, we could set a schedule for the both stores and decide who opens or closes on Sunday. That would have given our employees a break. At the same time, we will keep our profit. From that experience, I learned to listen and talk with anyone before I make my last decision and find the best solution that will work for me and the other person. For example, when I travel to any city or country, I try to find places that can give me the cheapest price than the...

An Analysis Into Using Biblical Perspectives in Choosing Christian Education Curriculum Development

...Conclusion 9 Bibliography 11 Introduction Curriculum development within Christian Education (CE) is not an easy task to undertake. However, in order to impact the lives of Christians, such development is a vital part of expediting the growth of within the family of faith. The Christian church is established based upon the five founding principles (evangelism, education, fellowship, service and worship) and the curriculum that is chosen by the church should accurately reflect these principles. Today more than ever the mandate given to us by Jesus the Christ, which calls for us to continue not only educating ourselves but educating others, is a challenge. Of the five founding principles, education may be the hardest principle to fully implement. Throughout history the method of teaching parishioners has changed. From teaching and learning extensively through Sunday sermons from the pulpit, to Bible study or mid week services, traditional Sunday school classes and now even small groups which operate inside and outside the church house, even the scope of delivery has changed. With the change in delivery also comes a change in curricula. From the outside looking in, one may say that curricula shouldn’t be an issue since the church...

Deregulation of Trading Hours

...10 Retail trading hours regulation Key points  Restrictions on shop trading hours have varied objectives, including the opportunity for some small businesses to trade without competition from larger retailers and to reduce the need for retail employees to work outside ‘traditional’ working hours. For consumers, restrictions on trading hours impinge on consumer choice regarding when (and where) to shop, causing inconvenience and congestion costs. For retailers, there are efficiency costs and administration costs in complying with state trading regimes. But the largest costs are reserved for those retailers who are prevented from trading to the extent they would like: they forego trade to other retailers and also to other avenues of discretionary consumer spending. Changes in social patterns have contributed to decisions by state and territory governments to liberalise trading hours regimes over time. But for all states, some trading restrictions still remain and they continue to discriminate between retailers on the basis of products sold, size and location. Beyond the deregulated ACT and Northern Territory, restrictions on trading hours apply with varying levels of intensity. Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland are the most restrictive states. Some of the regulated states have also established geographic shopping districts or regional trading precincts which have created significant ‘boundary’ anomalies that fundamentally distort retail markets. Onerous and...

...Chris Abani’s novel, GraceLand, tells a heartbreaking journey of a teenage boy named Elvis, and his slow escape from the impoverished lifestyle of Lagos, Nigeria. Elvis is smart and independent, having lost his mother when he was a young boy and growing up with a distant relationship with his father, Sunday. Throughout the novel, Elvis’s relationship with each character becomes important in defining Elvis’s character as a whole. Each character has a very distinct influence on Elvis and it is these different influences that shape him into the puzzled and distraught youth he is illustrated as in the novel. Elvis lives a different life when he is in Afikpo. In the first flashbacks, it is easy to see how close Elvis is with his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice is later revealed to be suffering from breast cancer and inevitable dies when Elvis is still young. But before she does, she makes full effort to teach her son everything necessary for him after she dies. Beatrice tells her mother, Oye, “I have taught him to sew, to iron, to cook, to read and write at a level beyond his age” (Abani 38). Beatrice’s teachings explains how Elvis is well beyond his years at age sixteen; he loves reading eminent works of literature and cares enough for his step-siblings to buy them food since their mother, Comfort, never would. After Beatrice passes away, Elvis remains close to his grandmother, Oye. In a later flashback, Elvis would read her letters from her pen pals. Abani writes, “Elvis...
