...Synthes 1 1. Situation Analysis: A. Nature of Demand The products in discussion are ‘bioresorbable’ internal fixation devices. These devices are surgically placed to stabilize broken bones, aiding in allowing the body to heal itself. Internal fixation devices in the past had been made of stainless steel or titanium, but with problems resulting from those permanent devices, an innovative approach is being considered. Bioresorbable implants are a possible replacement to the original implants that would eliminate the need for removal, which has shown to be a problem for traditional implants. The Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO) formed in 1958 to improve and standardize the state of internal fixation. Over time, companies were formed to help the AO vision, with Synthes forming to serve and distribute to North America. Synthes management asked a Harvard Business Team review board to evaluate the potential for moving forward with bioresorbable internal fixation devices. The purpose of this case was to see how feasible and beneficial it would be for Synthes to enter the bioresorbables market. B. Extent of Demand In 2000, internal fixation device sales were near 541.5 million dollars, with an additional 5% annual growth. In cases of trauma where there was damage that required aligning bones, most often internal fixation devises were needed. Some of the parts included in this were plates, rods and screws. The use of the stainless...

...HCMC University of Pedagogy – English department ( A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF COMPLIMENTS IN AMERICAN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE Student: Dang Thi Thao Nguyen Class: 4A06 Instructor: Ph.D Nguyen Ngoc Vu (( December 2009 When a student gets a high score, his teacher usually says: “Good job!”. When a child automatically cleans up the room after playing, her parents are likely to say: “You are very good”. When you go to school wearing a new shirt, you probably hear from your friends: “That shirt looks nice on you”. Those utterances are called compliments which are used to show that someone likes someone else’s appearance, belongings, or work etc. Due to different cultural background and social values, English and Vietnamese native speakers have different norms of complimenting as well as responding to compliments. In this essay, I will discuss the notion of compliment made in American English and Vietnamese in terms of topics, formulas, and responses. First thing first, let have a look at the definition. Definition of compliment Cambridge dictionary defines a compliment as “a remark that expresses approval, admiration or respect”. In linguistics, Holmes (1986, p.446) wrote “A compliment is a speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes credit to someone other than the speaker, usually the person addressed, for some ‘good’ (possession, characteristic, skill, etc.), which is...

...Preface During the past century, the impact of mathematics on humanity has been more tremendous than ever since Galileo's agonizing fight against the old establishment and the revolution which physics experienced after Newton's subsequent synthesis. At the beginning of the last century, mathematical ideas and techniques were spread to theoretical and applied physics by the influence of two of the greatest mathematicians of all times, D. Hilbert and H. Poincar6, being then at the zenith of their careers. Their ability to establish very deep at first glance often hidden connections between a priori separated branches of science convinced physicists to adopt and work with the most powerful existing mathematical tools. Whereas the 20th century really was the century of physics, mathematics enjoyed a well deserved reputation from its very beginning, so facilitating the huge impact it had subsequently on humanity. This reputation has been crucial for the tremendous development of science and technology. Although mathematics supported the development of weapons of mass destruction, it simultaneously promoted the advancement of computers and high technology, without which the substantial improvement of the living conditions humanity as a whole has experienced, could not have been realized. In no previous time the world has seen such a spectacular growth of scientific knowledge as during the last century, with mathematics playing a central role in most scientific and...

...Slexipedia: Word Formation and Social Use 3.1 Introduction In his publication A Glossary of Netspeak and Textspeak David Crystal blended the two words lexiconand encyclopaediato form lexipedia, a word he used to describe the nature and purpose of his publication as "a cross between a dictionary (lexicon) and an encyclopaedia" (Crystal, 2004: vii). For each term in the glossary there is information one would look up in a dictionary, and the sort of knowledge one would expect to find in an encyclopaedia, such as an etymology of the entry and a hint of its sociolinguistic use. For example: newbie A newcomer to a chatgroup or virtual-world environment, especially one who has not yet learned the way to behave when participating in the dialogue. >>chatgroup; netiquette; virtual world (Crystal, 2004: 79) The coinage of the neologism Slexipedia compounds the acronym SL with lexipedia to provide a term to describe the Second Life-specific lexis in my corpus. In addition to providing a SL glossary according to Crystal's method (Appendix X), this chapter investigates the creative and innovative word-formation processes of SL English and Arabic vocabulary by its residents. Since use of vocabulary reflects identity (Crystal, 2001; Benwell and Stokoe, 2006; Boellstorff, 2008), the final concern of this chapter is the manner in which these SL terms are used in conversational interaction inworld, to reflect the social purposes and circumstances in which these words are...

...DOH Breastfeeding TSEK Program 2011 – PRECEDE-PROCEED Analysis Introduction and Program Rationale The protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding rank among the most effective interventions to improve child’s survival. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that high coverage of optimal breastfeeding practices could avert 13% of the 10.6 million yearly deaths of children five years old and below. Everyday, as many as 4,000 infants and young children die worldwide because they are not breastfed. According to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), it is because their mothers are not empowered with adequate knowledge about breast-feeding and do not receive enough motivation and support (UNICEF, 1994). Babies, their mothers, their families, their community, their environment, even the economy of the country in which they live, all benefit from breast-feeding (ibid). Realizing the great advantages of breast-feeding and the changing patterns of breast-feeding practice worldwide, the World Health Organization, 1981, recommended that all infants should be “exclusively breastfed for 4 to 6 months of age”(Kaunang, 1999). Moreover, UNICEF(1994) has advocated breast-feeding as one of the strategies for “ Child Survival” and exclusive breast-feeding as a best protective way for infants against infection and malnutrition. Nowadays, promotion of breast-feeding through Family Planning and MCH Programs is increasingly considered to be a public...

...Management Education In a churning global marketplace, understanding the fundamental connections between business, the environment, and society has become essential. The roles and responsibilities of business as a global force are becoming more urgent and complex, and concepts related to societal responsibility and sustainability are gaining recognition as essential elements in business management. Increasing complexity and interdependence require new approaches. Companies need integrative management tools that help embed environmental, social, and governance concerns into their strategic thinking and daily operations. They need support as they internalize and integrate these issues into the core of businesses, engage in dialogue with stakeholders, and report their conduct. They require talented and ethical leaders who can not only advance organizational goals and fulfill legal and fiduciary obligations to shareholders, but who are also prepared to deal with the broader impact and potential of business as a positive global force in society. Any meaningful and lasting change in the conduct of corporations toward societal responsibility and sustainability must involve the institutions that most directly act as drivers of business behavior, especially academia. Academic institutions help shape the attitudes and behavior of business leaders through business education, research, management development programs, training, and other pervasive, but less tangible, activities, such as...

...Memory Mapping and Task Scheduling Techniques for Computation Models of Image Processing on Many-Core Platforms Memory Mapping and Task Scheduling Techniques for Computation Models of Image Processing on Many-Core Platforms Abstract Adding more processor core can help in the improvement of a computer performance. As a result in the number of high specification application being run on the computer, it reduces the processing ratio of processor core. This journal focuses on how the system resources is being shared. It also explains how an algorithm is being use to share, map and schedule task for more processor cores. At the end of the research, the algorithm states how the processor core are being improved greatly by 64.77% . with the speed up ratio of 43.55 can be obtained if 48 process unit is employed and are all activated and 10% will be the performance ratio. Introduction Demand for high definition image of modern images made the computation working application much higher. To achieve efficiency improvements were needed on the system architecture. The frequency of single core processors could not have any impact on the processor cores even when the frequency is increased, as a result processors with higher computation power were employed. Today a number of parallel image processing algorithms with emphasis in manipulating the arithmetical level ignoring the limitation of hardware in a many processor core machine and are also developed for many core system. In other to...
