As the Scientific Revolution and Age of Enlightenment were coming to and end, a new revolution was developing. The Industrial Revolution refers to the time period in which major industrialization occurred. Businesses used machines to manufacture products, instead of making them by hand. Millions of people moved to cities to pursue new opportunities. Although the Industrial Revolution did create infrastructure in cities, to 19th century England it was more harmful than beneficial. To begin, the living conditions in cities were very poor. Subsequently, the conditions for workers during this time were considerably worse than the previous era. According to document one, there was a huge growth of the city of Manchester, a city in England with a large population and important economic centers. Furthermore, more infrastructure, such as railroads and areas of development, was found throughout the metropolitan area. As a result of this dramatic increase in population due to the Industrial Revolution, pollution and sanitation became big problems. The homes of the common people were located near factories which produced noxious gases, eventually causing people to become sickly. Also, living quarters were small and portly ventilated, so the polluted air from the factories was all that the people were breathing. Additionally, these towns complex institutions were not built to accommodate millions of people. This lead to inadequate sewage and draining system, eventually causing people to leave waste on the streets. According to document three, the common people lived on top of each other in crowded houses. The air was heavy with smoke, leaving all nature dead or dying. The people in industrialized cities suffered from overpopulation. Because of this, diseases spread faster and had the capability to kill even more people. The overpopulation in these cities was caused by the increase in migration from rural areas into urban areas, because there were more opportunities. According to document five, people in manufacturing towns live without food and have become thin and frail. The people in these towns constantly suffered from starvation and disease. These people died from starvation because they were undernourished and more susceptible to disease. As I said previously, Industrial Revolution lead to an increase in population in cities. With more people in these places, diseases such as typhoid spread quicker. Although most of these people were working long hours to provide for themselves and their families, they were not making enough to survive. According to document eight, the workers in these cities have battered limbs and lean bodies. Also, they suffer from premature old age. These factory workers were being overworked almost to the point of death. This was caused by the increase in manufacturing jobs that occurred during the Industrial Revolution. Many people in England worked in factories that had little to no regulations. Eventually, there came the realization that more people were dying than ever before because of their work. Some regulations were put in place to better the conditions in these cities and prevent the death rate from rising anymore. According to document six, the people in rural areas live considerably longer than those in cities such as Manchester. The average age at death of people living in industrial districts was 27,
