Alternative antimicrobials will be reviewed by taking into consideration their mechanisms of action and how they can represent a viable option to address the issue of antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial Background ------------------------------------------------- Figure 1: Structure of penicillin and β-lactam ring (Adapted from LNLS, 2013) ------------------------------------------------- Figure 1: Structure of penicillin and β-lactam ring (Adapted from LNLS, 2013) Antimicrobials are substances that kill or suppress microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses (EPA, 2014). The first evidence of antimicrobials dates back to the Egyptians who used mouldy bread to treat surface infections (Wainwright, 1989). At the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Ehrlich synthesized the first antimicrobial agent known as Salvarsan, a drug used for treating syphilis (Aminov, 2010). Successively Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin by noticing that the growth of Staphylococcus aureus was inhibited in presence of the mold produced by Penicillium fungi. This led to the conclusion that microorganisms produce substances to limit...

...easily get into a computer’s information though a wireless network. Identity theft can even get implemented with wireless security, if you have a lot of personal information. Credit card information and bank account information can all be stolen from the system and then used for evil. Not only are personal homes affected, but businesses can be too. WarDriving is a big fad among the computer ‘hackers.’ WarDriving came from the movie “WarGames” staring Matthew Broderick. In the movie he did what was called “wardialing”. Wardialing is to keep dialing numbers that would access a computer system’s modem until you find a modem and gain access. WarDriving is where someone can drive around in a vehicle and use GPS software to map out access points (AP). Some people take WarDriving further and start accessing wireless networks using other peoples’ bandwidth and/or stealing information off the computer. There are many different programs out there used to see the wireless networks in range. One of the most popular is NetStumbler. NetStumbler scans areas using the wireless network card to...

...any artful deviation from the ordinary mode of speaking or writing. It is what makes up a writer’s style – how he or she uses language. The general thinking is that we are more likely to be persuaded by rhetoric that is interesting, even artful, rather than mundane. When John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (an example of anastrophe), it was more interesting – and more persuasive – than the simpler, “Don’t be selfish.” Indeed, politicians and pundits use these devices to achieve their desired effect on the reader or listener nearly every time they speak. The stylistic elements in a piece of writing work to produce a desired effect related to the text’s (and author’s) purpose, and thus reveals the rhetorical situation. In classical rhetoric, figures of speech are divided into two main groups: Schemes — Deviation from the ordinary pattern or arrangement of words (transference of order). Tropes — Deviation from the ordinary and principal meaning of a word (transference of meaning). *Important Note: Words marked with an asterisk* are words for which it would be impossible for you to write 3 examples for your weekly vocabulary assignment. In those cases, please write only the definition, in your own words, and the rhetorical uses/effect of that device, or do what you are instructed to do under those words. Please mark these words that deviate from the ordinary assignment with an asterisk* when you type them on...

...in preparation for the transition to college, poor research skills still seem to be the norm. To gain insight into the problem, library instruction environments of nineteen high schools were explored. The schools were selected based on whether their graduates did well or poorly on information-skills assignments integrated in a required first-year college course. The librarians in the nineteen schools were asked to characterize their working relationships with teachers, estimate their students’ information-literacy achievement, and provide data on their staffing and budgets. Findings suggest that school librarians are seldom in a position to adequately collaborate with teachers and that their opportunities to help students achieve information literacy are limited. Introduction The study reported in this paper was inspired by observations made by students in the Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey in the United States. For many years, MLIS students in both the Information Literacy: Learning and Teaching and the Field Experience courses commented that undergraduates whom they encountered as part of their assignments were poor users of academic library resources. This was true at Princeton as well as Rutgers and New Jersey...

...CHAPTER 2 – Solutions to Assignment Problems Assignment 2.1: a. b. Net profit margin = net income/net sales = 118,290/452,510 = 26.14% c. Accumulated depreciation = 212,820 + 12,510 = $225,330. Assignment 2.2: a. b. Assume for this problem that the number given for Net income is actually Net income available to common stockholders (that is, reported Net income minus preferred dividends). Thus, Annual addition to Retained earnings = Net income available to common stockholders – Common stock dividends paid. Thus, Common stock dividends paid = Net income – Addition to (i.e., change in) Retained earnings. Common stock dividends paid = 25,400 – (89,280 – 79,880) = 16,000. Dividends per share = Dividends divided by number of shares outstanding. Number of shares outstanding = Common Stock divided by par value per share = 60,000/.20 = 300,000. Dividends per share = $0.053 or 5.3 cents per share. c. Cash spent on new plant and equipment = Depreciation for the year as listed on the income statement plus the change in net fixed assets. Thus, Cash spent on fixed assets in 1999 = 10,260 + (202,640 – 184660) = $28,240. Assignment 2.3: 1. $4,055,740 $4,100,144 Although Gross sales decreased by 2 percent, net sales (the only number reported) show an increase of 1.1 percent. Since Returns and allowances are estimates made by management, there is some chance that the growth in sales conclusion may be misleading. 2. Cost of goods sold = Beginning...
