...Anna Marie C. Mostales Mr. Marc Kenneth Marquez Afro-Asian Literature August 15, 2013 Footnote to Youth: Jose Garcia Villa In Jose Garcia Villa's Footnote to Youth, he tackles the responsibilities and realities that come with marriage and the family life. In it, he narrates the story of Dodong, wherein we are introduced to Dodong when he is seventeen and seeking to marry his love Teang. He is problematic over how he intends to talk to his father about marrying Teang, going over the possible responses his father would give, and at the same time convincing himself that he is old enough to handle the responsibility. On his way home, he makes a stop to relieve himself. The ground was broken up into many fresh wounds and fragrant with a sweetish, earthy smell. Many slender soft worms emerged from the furrows and then burrowed again deeper into the soil. The appearance of the worms and the occurrence of one worm crawling over Dodong's foot is of great importance to the story, as it serves as a revealing of Dodong's character and future. A short colorless worm marched blindly towards Dodong's foot and crawled clammily over it. Dodong got tickled and jerked his foot, flinging the worm into the air. Several characteristics attributed to the worm can also be reflected back onto Dodong's story, particularly the fact that the short worm was crawling blindly. It would be interesting to note, as well, the...

...amiguity Misunderstandings occur when a speaker has one referent in mind for a definite expression like George or the papers, and the addressee is thinking of a different George or some other papers. No doubt we have all experienced, and been troubled by, this kind of problem in reference. We can see other instances of referential ambiguity that are due to the nature of referring expressions, the vagueness that pieces of language necessarily have. Referential ambiguity occurs when 1 an indefinite referring expression may be specific or not; 32 I wanted to buy a newspaper. Here a newspaper may refer to a specific newspaper or some newspaper, any newspaper. The ambiguity disappears if we add, on the one hand, but I couldn’t find it or, on the other hand, but I couldn’t find one. 2 anaphora is unclear because a personal pronoun, he, she, it or they, can be linked to either of two referring expressions: 33 Jack told Ralph that a visitor was waiting for him. 3 the pronoun you is used generically or specifically: 34 If you want to get ahead, you have to work hard. (Is you the addressee or is this sentence a general platitude?) 4 a noun phrase with every can have distributed reference or collected 35 I’m buying a drink for everybody here. (One drink for all or one drink for each?) Referential ambiguity occurs when the context does not make clear whether a referring expression is being used specifically or not; when the interpretation of a referring expression...

...Citation analysis is the process of gathering citations from a set of source documents, separating each into its component parts, and aggregating those parts to highlight trends in material type, journal title, age, or other factors. Many librarians undertake a citation analysis at the local level as a way of evaluating past collection development practices and informing future decisions regarding the collection. Hoffmann and Doucette (2012) reviewed the methods used in 34 such studies published between 2005 and 2010 alone. All of these were user studies--studies of a particular user group's citation practices--and all sought to inform collection practices. Hoffmann and Ducette caution those approaching a citation analysis project to consider their objectives and choose data to be analyzed accordingly. Their appendix, Guide to Considerations for Citation Analysis Methodologies, offers suggestions for defining the scope of a study. Thinking through decisions before confronting a mountain of citations will save the researcher's time and allow for the creation of a consistent, streamlined dataset. Careful consideration of the methods can help the researcher avoid some of the problems and pitfalls cited by critics of citation analysis. MacRoberts and MacRoberts (1989) point to the interpretation of the bibliography as a "list of influences." They argue that, among other issues, authors in their sample did not cite all their formal influences, and rarely cited any of their informal...

...simplistic. He does not seem to be taken up with the use of long and complicated words like that of Pound or Eliot. His words are more short, beautiful and filled with simple and crisply described images. Williams from what I am observing seems to be inventing a new style of writing poetry. A style that does not consist of using elaborate words or references to history in order to make its point, but rather one that requires an individual using or having their imagination stimulated when reading his work. He places great emphasis on the imagination because he explains that in the imagination the author and the reader become one. He says in one of his proses that, “The imagination, intoxicated by prohibitions, rises to drunken heights to destroy the world. Let it rage, let it kill. The imagination is supreme. To it all our works forever, from the remotest part to the farthest future, have been, are and will be dedicated,” and I think that Williams’s in this quote is trying to explain that our imaginations are like our own personal historical databases and reference center so when we read a work we must not be bombarded with references to the past but rather we must be stimulated to think about and investigate the past using our own imagination. In addition, I found the structuring of this book to be very whimsical and creative. The minor distractions are what further adds originality to his text and what keeps you engaged and alert. Throughout most of the beginning of this text...

...Psychological Association should be followed. Some students plagiarize because they think that it is not necessary to place citations throughout the written work text, but only on the reference page. This occurs when the individual is unfamiliar with the APA guidelines. Lack of knowledge of the subject due to students procrastinating. Procrastination does not allow for the student to thoroughly research the subject to ensure that the ideas are solely his or her own. Procrastination can cause a student to plagiarize by copying and pasting the information that is found. This practice can also cause a student to purchase the work of others from different sources. Intentional versus Unintentional Plagiarism Intentional plagiarism occurs when an individual knowingly uses the work of another as his or her own. A common form of intentional plagiarism is copying and pasting from multiple sources to construct a source and not giving the authors credit. Unintentional plagiarism occurs when an individual uses a series of words from a source and does not credit the author. A common form of unintentional plagiarism is rearranging the information that another author wrote by changing or omitting words (APA, 2010, pg. 171). Students sometimes forget to provide an in text citation, but place the source on the reference page. Even though this act...
