Prince Vladimir in the 11th century chose to convert Rus to Byzantine Christianity over Islam because of Islam’s prohibition on alcohol. I feel that this is the most significant because it established a monotheistic religion for Russia and eliminated the need for pagan gods and later on when the Christian church split it resulted in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

2. Appanage Russia - This period featured several Russian princes vying for control over territory. The Mongols were light rulers that collected tribute from the bickering Russian princes. The Mongols had to choose the Grand Prince from among the Russians. Most importantly, the Mongol rule cut the Russians off from the Byzantines and further isolated them from Europe.The Mongols helped by attacking the Muscovite princes enemies.

3. Battle of Kulikovo Field - Battle showed that the Mongols weren’t invincible and allowed Moscow to look like the hero of the Russians. This allowed for the idea of a unified Russia.
