...Lab Plagiarism, Referencing and APA Style European Studies and The Hague University of Applied Sciences have a strict policy towards plagiarism and insist that all students use APA Style referencing to prevent accidental plagiarism. APA Style is a set of rules for writing research reports and documenting sources in academic writing that was created by the American Psychological Association to standardise practices in the social sciences. It is the standard for academic writing at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and includes a standard format for Research Reports and for documenting information you use from sources. Documenting Sources and Plagiarism Plagiarism refers to using someone else’s ideas or words without giving them credit or passing someone else’s work off as your own. Most of the time, this happens by accident: a student borrows some information or text from a website and forgets to properly indicate what they’ve done. There are more extreme cases, in which students deliberately copy someone else’s work, in violation of the Code of Conduct at European Studies, which insists that “we are always honest with each other and with ourselves,”1 but thankfully, these cases are rare. It is essential that, whenever you write something, you make sure that you clearly label anything you did not write yourself so that you never have to be accused of plagiarism. APA style gives you the tools to do this. In-Text Referencing Whenever you want to...

...Referencing What is referencing? Referencing is acknowledging all of the material (books, articles, electronic resources – collectively known as your sources) that you have used in writing your assignment. Because this is other people’s work / ideas, you need to acknowledge their influence and ideas within your work. “Why bother?” or Reasons for referencing Referencing is an academic requirement. It is unethical (and can be illegal) to pass off the intellectual property of others as your own. This is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is regarded as a very serious offence (see your programme’s Student Handbook). Learning to reference correctly is your best protection against charges of plagiarism. HINT: Whenever you read, take notes, or photocopy any material that you might use in an assignment, immediately copy the full reference information onto your copy. If you can’t reference it – you can’t use it ! What is APA? There are multiple “styles” of referencing. The major ones are the Chicago, Harvard and APA styles. Each is slightly different from the other. The AUT faculty of Health uses the American Psychological Association (APA) system of referencing. The current edition of the APA style is the 5th edition. Below are the basic elements of the APA style of referencing. These are intended as guidelines only. You may find these guidelines do not cover your specific needs. For further information you can consult the APA style manual held in the library. The Call No. is...

...Information Services Guide to Proofreading What is Proofreading? Proofreading involves checking the content and appearance of your written work: looking for errors in typing, spelling and grammar, and ensuring that it is presented in a style that meets the requirements of a module or course. Proofreading is a skill that requires time, but the more you practice the quicker and easier it will become to spot any corrections that need to be made. Why is Proofreading important? Proofreading is an essential final stage of the essay writing process which should not be overlooked as a poorly presented piece of work can lose marks. After the effort of finding information and writing the essay, don’t lose marks by submitting a work spoiled by spelling and grammatical errors, or that does not adhere to your module’s requirements. A well-presented essay indicates to your tutor that you care about your work. Areas to check: Proofreading can be time-consuming and it is easy to underestimate the time required. It is a good idea to build in time for proofreading into your assignment plan. It is especially important that you follow any module requirements regarding referencing, line spacing, paragraph indentation, and margins, and that these are observed consistently and continuously. Checklist: Grammar | | check | spelling | Don’t rely on the spellchecker in Word - this won’t pick up “typos” as from/form or been/bean. Use a dictionary to check spellings - don’t guess at...

...Guide to Formatting Psychology Papers: APA Style by Terry Student (your name here) Psychology Department (or your department) Mansfield University for PSY 4430, Theories of Personality (class here) Dr. Margaret Launius (professor here) December 19, 2001 (date turned in here) Abstract All research papers and many other written papers will begin with an abstract page that is numbered as page 2. The abstract is a brief summary of the paper or research project and should be about 100 to 120 words long. Like the rest of the paper, it should be double-spaced. Your professor will tell you if a course paper should include an abstract page. If you need to include an abstract in your paper, you would use the heading shown above. Do not use the title of your paper as the heading for the abstract page. Start the introduction of your paper on a new page. Guide to Formatting Psychology Papers: APA Style If you have used an abstract, the third page of the paper will start with the introduction section. If you have not used an abstract, then page two will be the beginning of your paper. You will use the title of your paper as the first-level heading (see above for example). APA Style Headings Headings and subheadings are used to help organize the paper into coherent sections that guide the reader from topic to topic. The heading style you use is dependent upon the number of headings you will be using in your paper...
