Company Overview:
The company provides online and on-campus post-secondary education geared primarily towards working adults. Its flagship institution, University of Phoenix, has an alumni network of 700,000 people. Founded in 1973 by John Sperling, it has grown to become the world’s largest private education provider. It offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in numerous fields. In 2007, it formed a joint venture with the Carlyle Group to expand its market internationally. The goal was to utilize e-learning to educate the masses in the developing world, where the number of post-secondary institutions is not able to meet demand. The current CEO of the company is Gregory W. Cappelli. Dr. Sperling still serves on the Board as Executive Chairman.

Current Issues:
1. Public perception about proprietary education providers and, more specifically, online learning. Due to the inconsistent quality of education provided by different proprietary schools, the overall image and reputation of the industry is not that great. These for-profit institutions are often viewed as diploma mills. Here are some comments I’ve personally heard about them: “They’ll graduate anyone that can afford to pay the tuition” and “the quality of education that you receive is inferior to a traditional university”. Similarly for online programs, regardless of whether they’re from a profit or non-profit institution, many people don’t feel that they provide the same interaction as a brick and mortar school and therefore you don’t get the full learning experience.
2. High dropout rate. The industry is prone to a high level of student dropouts. Students start a degree program without fully understanding the time commitment that is involved. The acceptance rate at proprietary schools is almost 100% so just about anyone can get in. Also, anyone who is a US citizen or resident can qualify for

The Apollo Group, Inc. Uop

...Introduction As the largest for-profit education company, and the company that pioneered the modern forprofit education model, Apollo Group, Inc. has the potential to be the industry leader in student success. Instead the investigation demonstrates that, at least during the period examined, the company invested relatively little in students and struggled to retain Associate degree students. While the company has started to take positive steps in the right direction, more remains to be done. Company Profile Apollo Group, Incorporated (“Apollo”) is a publicly traded for-profit educational institution headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. Apollo operates two for-profit college brands, the University of Phoenix and Western International University. In 1994, Apollo became the second for-profit college to become publicly traded. The University of Phoenix accounts for the overwhelming majority of the company’s students and is the Nation’s largest for-profit college. It offers Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs in over 100 different fields.1078 Thirty-six percent of Apollo’s students are enrolled in the Associate degree programs, 48 percent in Bachelor’s degree programs, and 16 percent in Graduate level programs.1079 The company’s Associate degree program is exclusively online.1080 Apollo operates over 280 locations, and of these locations, approximately 76 are campuses that provide classes in person. The remaining installations are “learning centers” that...

...The Apollo Group, Inc. has an interesting beginning and was able to finally find eventual success. The Apollo Group founded the University of Phoenix in 1976, the founder was Dr. John Sperling. Dr John Sperling decided to go after an opportunity that consisted of creating a university geared toward working adults. Since 1976 the Apollo Group, Inc. has forged ahead and found a spot on the Fortune 500 list falling from it’s number 452 spot in 2011 to its 2012 number 504 ranking. How Apollo Group reached that spot was discussed in a case study developed by Richard B. Robinson in 2009. From this case study I have done a SWOT analysis and came up with a few strategies. A business SWOT can uncover internal strengths and external opportunities along with weaknesses and threats. SWOT ANALYSIS Internal University Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths * Geared towards working adults * Faculty are working professionals within their profession * flexible by holding classes in leased office spaces which cuts down on costs * Large name recognition Weaknesses * Profit margins could be hampered by significant spending on research and development and information technology * UOP recruiter’s salaries based solely on number of recruits * Slow approval for students being properly schooled * Younger student still interested in enrolling in conventional 4 year universities External Opportunities and Threats Opportunities * Students from developing countries...

Appolo Group

...details of the evolution of Apollo Group, Inc. [University of Phoenix] and the various marketing methods it used to become one of the premier for-profit educational institutions, and the various obstacles the company has been through to claim the spot that it currently holds, in the business, and education arenas. It should be noted that much of Apollo Group, Inc. [University of Phoenix] success, lies on the fact that they were the first institution that pioneered online education. They have paved the way that other institutions mimic when attempting to venture in this type of setting. As a result they have capitalized on this and have used the lessons learned to leverage their brand into other areas, such as online high school education, and international markets. However, as Apollo Group, Inc. innovates, and their profits grow, the other educational institutions have been cautious about the true value of the quality associated with their degrees; the federal government has been attentive on Apollo Group, Inc.’s practices associated in recruiting students. Due to these complications Apollo Group, Inc. has had to examine its ethics policy, in order to mitigate these threats, and consequently a: Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis, was conducted. With regards to the SWOT analysis, it is recommended that Apollo Group, Inc. should focus on eliminating its threats first or at the very least mitigate them. Since Apollo Group, Inc. is at the top of the...

Management Case Study.

...Management Case Study Ken Drake XMGT/216 October 28, 2011 Dan Mitchell Axia College of the University of Phoenix Management Case Study Mr. Austen: I am sending you this short response to your request to reduce payroll by 15%. I have begun a study of the problem and wish to describe for you the actions I plan to take to reach this goal. As you may be aware, the company recently hired some new employee’s, women, and minorities, to remedy a lack of diversity in the workplace. This has presented problems in completing my task because of ethical issues and my own moral beliefs of making these new workers the answer to the problem. It is to this end that I am changing directions and moving away from seniority and job performance and looking for other ways to cut payroll. I called for a meeting of the employees in my department this morning and described the payroll problem to them, and asked for suggestions. After some silence, several people who have been with the company the longest offered to take a temporary cut in pay to help. Others offered to work three days less during the month, and all have agreed to the changes in schedule to cover the empty spots. I am working on an incentive program to boost production on the days that all of the employees are together and to give the employees that have opted for pay cuts to get some money coming in to cover the loss. After doing some calculations, I believe we can meet the 15% payroll reduction, plus 1%, with no losses...

Multivitamin Review

...Multivitamin Review Susan St. Ama SCI 241 September 22, 2011 Tiffany Lee Multivitamin Review I chose to review the multivitamin I currently take daily. I know I do not eat the recommended daily amounts of fruits, grains, and dairy because of the way they sometimes upset my stomach. I have never really evaluated my multivitamin so this is the perfect opportunity to determine if my choice of vitamin is the best option for me. Based on the label the multivitamin I correctly take exceeds the recommended daily allowance for adults on most of the minerals and vitamins listed on tables 8.2, 8.3, 91, and 9.6 in chapter 8 and 9 of the text. According to this information I may need to research another choice of multivitamin since I my diet does provide most of these vitamins and minerals and I may not need the additional quantities I am ingesting with the addition of a multivitamin. Since I do not consume much milk or dairy products, it is necessary that I take a calcium and potassium supplement daily and as this multivitamin only provides 300 mg of calcium, and none additional potassium, I need to consider an alternative to meet my daily calcium and potassium needs. The positive news is because my diet may be lacking in some of these vitamins and minerals, I am not at risk of consuming near-toxic levels. Toxicity can cause a variety of illnesses and negative health effects ranging anywhere from nausea and diarrhea to nerve, liver or brain damage, and as in the case of excess...

Technical Instructions

...Clear and Concise Technical Instructions AXIA College University of Phoenix The electronic equipment I chose is a coffee maker by Mr Coffee. I did some research into the coffee maker, and found the technical user manual. I found the manual easily understandable, and comprehensive. The manual is very informal, and topics covered in the manual are easy to locate with the table of contents. In the front of the manual, the warnings are present, and clear to the reader. With a triangle shape with an exclamation point to depict that there is present danger, or will damage the equipment if the caution is not read. With symbols present throughout the manual in areas the manufacturer deems necessary that potential risks pose a threat to the consumer. If these risks do not inform the consumer, the manufacturer would be set up with lawsuits, and money unnecessarily spent among employees will be costly. The company understands these potential circumstances by the way the user manual is wrote. Contact information documentation in areas that detail certain parts of the coffee maker is helpful to the consumer. If the consumer has any questions regarding the part details of the coffee maker, then the consumer does not have to search for the contact information. With extra parts shown on the page as the documentation, the manufacturer makes it easy for the consumer to contact, and order the extra parts for the coffee maker. With the step-by-step instructions clear, and concise in the...
