Description: James has an average build. He works at a local university, is married, and has two children in elementary school.

Goal: James wants to pursue his dream since high school of playing for the San Diego Chargers football team.

Goal Action Plan

1. Goal: Play middle linebacker for the San Diego Chargers

2. Type of goal: Personal, professional, and financial

3. Purpose of goal: I will be able to fulfill my lifelong dream of being paid to play a game. The notoriety and perks associated with being a professional athlete will be nice, too.

4. Major benefit to me: Larger paycheck, better physical condition, travel, and some fame

5. Benefit to others: My family will benefit from the extra money. The rest of the linebacking corps will benefit from my spirited play and nose for the football.

6. Barriers: My age and size could be factors. Lack of experience is another obstacle. Geographic location is also a problem.

7. Solution: I can’t do much about my age, but I can begin bulking up through proper diet and exercise. I can gain experience by joining a full-contact league here in my city. I can wait to move until after I make the team.

6. Barriers: A kazoo costs up to $10, and I do not have a job to get the money to buy one. I do not know how to play the kazoo, so I will need lessons. Kazoo lessons are expensive; again, I do not have a job. I have a serious case of asthma, which could be a problem when playing a wind instrument. The Kelsey Kazoo Orchestra is located in Kelsey, 400 miles away.

7. Solution: I will begin practicing on a kazoo I took from my daughter that she got from a birthday party. I will then watch Internet videos on how to play the kazoo. Once I learn to play the kazoo, I will become a street performer to make enough money to get more lessons. I will bring my inhaler with me and use it during parts of the song when I am not required to play the kazoo. I will use the money from street performing to purchase a Vespa and helmet to travel to tryouts.

8. Action milestones: Find my daughter’s kazoo and sterilize it. Watch videos on how to play the kazoo. Become proficient enough to become a street performer. 6. Barriers: The potential barriers would be time and money. It could take years for this to happen, and it might require a large investment of money in lottery tickets and number dream books.

7. Solution: I will overcome the time barrier by learning to be more patient. I will try to realize that winning the lottery is not something that happens overnight and that most people play for years before they win. As far as money goes, I will set aside money every two weeks just for playing the lottery.

Goal: Kat wants to improve her fitness by training to complete a 5K race.

Goal Action Plan

1. Goal: I will complete a 5K race.

2. Type of goal: Personal and health-related

3. Purpose of goal: Training for the race will provide consistent exercise and health benefits. It will also serve as a habit-building activity that I can integrate into my daily routine.

4. Major benefit to me: Improved cardiovascular health, improved overall fitness, and reduction of stress from regular physical fitness activity

5. Benefit to others: They will get to cheer for me, which makes them all happy. Also, I hope to spread the desire to exercise to my family.

6. Barriers: I am pretty lazy. Just because I want to do something doesn’t mean I actually will. I might just think about it a lot instead, while I sit around and surf the Internet. I am also often tired and will use that as an excuse not to be active. I do not like to sweat, so that could be a problem since this is exercise.

7. Solution: I was planning on setting up a motivation–bribery system that rewarded me for every tiny little thing, since I respond best to external motivation. I am also going to drink a lot of caffeine to keep me from being tired. I am going to get Botox injections so I don’t sweat and then cannot use that excuse anymore.

8. Action milestones: I am going to use a training program, which is set up to get you ready to run a 5K in 9 weeks. Each week has a different fitness goal and walking or running intervals, such as jogging every other day each week, increasing distance until 1K is reached, and increasing distance by 1K per week.

Goal Action Plan

1. Goal: Lose 20 pounds through a doctor-monitored weight-loss program.

2. Type of goal: Personal and health-related

3. Purpose of goal: The purpose of this goal is to decrease my body fat percentage and to create a healthier lifestyle.

4. Major benefit to me: Losing the weight will be beneficial for my overall health—specifically, heart health, increased energy, and self-esteem.

5. Benefit to others: My family will benefit because they will also be eating healthier and becoming more active. My company is promoting healthy weight loss in a big campaign.

6. Barriers: Some barriers will be temptations, such as when sweets are served at work. Going out to eat is also a temptation. I will need to monitor my food selection to stay on track with stabilizing my weight. I will also need to overcome my past experiences of trying—and failing—to lose weight.

7. Solution: I need to think about this as different from my past weight-loss attempts by focusing on being healthy rather than just on losing weight. This should help overcome the issue of past failures. I also need to set myself up for success by buying only healthy foods for the house and purposely limiting serving sizes when I eat out.

8. Action milestones: I will weigh myself weekly just to make sure I am on track. Every 2 weeks, I will get a new BMI taken. I will also write down daily what I eat and track each lost pound. Once per month, I will reassess my progress and make further adjustments.

9. Overall target date: I would like to achieve my weight loss and healthier-eating goals within 12 weeks of starting this program. Accurate
