Appearance
The way we dress, walk, and talk says a lot about us. Physical appearance has to do with how a person grooms himself or herself. This narrows down the clothing and accessories one wears. Although appearance should not be how we judge a person, most of us get that habit from our family. Unfortunately, the reality is that people judge others by outer appearance.

As Brent Staples describes in his story, “Youngish black man-a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close.” (Staples 241) The woman walking by him was terrified of him. She was judging him by his appearance; by what he was wearing. Among other things, which form an individual’s appearance besides clothing is how one grooms. We have the tendency of assuming a person is a certain way because of their appearance. In comparison, how a person shaves, does their hair gives them a certain personality. Also the way they talk, move, and smile, says a lot about a person.

I have worked in the banking industry for five years and have learned a few things about people. As a result, working in the banking industry you get to see and meet different type of people. There was this one older lady that every morning would stop at the bank and have a cup of our complimentary coffee. She was never groomed her outfit was not up to date with todays fashion; It was like she has just gotten out of bed. First thing that came to my mind was “poor lady she must be homeless.” One day she came up to my desk and asked me to transfer some funds into her daughters account. Her daughter was away at college and was in need of money, I gladly said yes and went ahead with the transfer. It was until I entered her checking account that I found out that she was no poor lady. This lady was very wealthy. She had plenty of money to buy herself clothes and a cup of coffee. It turned out that she was a retired doctor, that was going through a rough patch in life. It immediately made me change my perception of people. I no longer “judge a book by its cover.”

Cheerleaders have a reputation as been a bunch of airheads that do not know much. They are considered valley girls because of the way they talk and act. The way we talk as well says something about us; in addition we start to judge people. In high school we where divided into our own little groups. There where the following stereotypical groups: nerds, jocks, freaks, preps and cheerleaders. We all stereotyped them assuming they where a certain way, since they hung out with certain groups. Once in class with them we realize that the cheerleaders where not dumb and a bunch of airheads. They actually they did have brains and used them.

Appearance can often be deceiving, even though it is easier to believe someone is a certain way by their appearance. Most people dress by how they are feeling that day. Thus it does not necessarily mean they are a certain way. An individual appearance varies from one individual to another. Therefore, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

In the essay, Barry juxtaposes men and women views of beauty by using the famous supermodel, Cindy Crawford, as the standard of apperance that women strive to achieve, even though that the women could never exactly look like Cindy Crawford, no matter how much or the way you apply the make-up. As for the men Barry uses the famous actor Bradd Pitt, as the strandard that men, not necessairly try to achieve, but as how a man is not suppose to be or act. He claims that men look at Brad Pitt as a pretty boy and that he would be ignorant to the tasks of a real man. Barry uses a different examples to juxtapose men and women view about beauty using Barbie and Action figures. He uses action figures for, of course, the men and that men not strive to look like the action, but how men uses action figures as a model of how a man is supposse to act and carry himself. In contrast Barry uses Barbie as women standard of apperance. Women want to look like Barbie, but women would have to be “seven feet tall and eighty-one pounds of which fifty-three of those pounds would be bosoms.’ Even though that was a bit of exaggerated, that is really what women are trying to achieve. Barry also juxtatposed the time that men and women spend on apperance. Men would...

Good vs. Bad Relationships

...Osas Odigie Mr. Aube Dec 11, 2012 Characteristics Of a Good and Bad Relationship 1. There are many factors that determine if a relationship could be considered either good or bad. Moreover, a good relationship can be determined by discovering the many factors that make it so. I believe that there are two stages to a good relationship: the beginning, and the ride. It is essential in every good relationship to have a good beginning. Every relationship begins with love and one does not need to be “in love” to be in a relationship; this is misunderstood between many couples. Anyway, love is the beginning of every relationship but in order for a relationship to be considered good, that love must remain constant or increase throughout the relationship. It is important for individuals to understand that in the beginnning, mistakes are prone to happen because there is no such thing as a flawless relationship. The ride of a relationship is basically everything else; the rest of the relationship. It is obvious that one does not show love through anger or hate and therefore there are specific ways in which love can be shown and these are what allows for a good ride in a relationship. Love can be broken down into five major parts. Respect, Trust/Support, Honesty, Responsibility and Romance. Respect is of the highest importance in every relationship. Individuals must view their spouse as equal to them and not greater or lesser. Couples must listen to to one another, valuing each other's...

Art Museum Paper

...Museum Paper Art 101 Starting my visit to the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum I was unsure of the artifact that I would choose to write this paper about. I have been to the Smithsonian museums countless times in my life strolling about taking the exhibits for granted like the many other people raised in the Washington metropolitan area having virtiously unlimited access to them. I was prepared for another mundane visit to the museums, however this visit was different I saw many exhibits that I have studied recently in this class such as the Lascaux caves and other prehistoric art. I found myself engaged as never before as I searched the old halls for what would be subject of this paper an ancient artifact of my very own choosing. I decided on the Cypruss crossroads of civilizations exhibit located on the museums second floor. I was drawn to this exhibit mainly due to the two large stone statues at opposing ends of it’s narrow entrance doors. Upon entry I was amazed at all of the ancient original pieces most of which I can recall learning about in this class. I decided that I would pick a piece and snap a quick picture of myself proudly standing next to it, get the dimensions and backround and be on my way to an A paper in no time. I pulled out my digital camera and began to power it up when I was immediately advised by the museum security guard that I was not authorized to take pictures inside the exhibit due to the delicate nature of the artifacts. I...
