...We are in love with this--Apple Pie Baked in the Apple. You will need 6 granny smith apples, 1 pie crust, 1/4 cup sugar and 1tablespoon brown sugar. Cut off the top of 4 apples off and discard. Remove the inside of each apple with a spoon very carefully, as to not puncture the peel. Remove skin from 2 additional apples and slice very thinly. These apple pieces will give you filling needed to fill the four apples you are baking. Mix sliced apples with sugars and cinnamon in a bowl. If you prefer more or less cinnamon and sugar, make adjustments as desired. Scoop sliced apples into hollow apples. Roll out pie crust and slice into 1/4 inch strips. You can also add a strip of pastry inside the top of the apple almost like a liner to add a little more texture/sweetness to the pie. Cover the top of the apple in a lattice pattern with pie crust strips. Place apples in an 8×8 pan. Add just enough water to the cover the bottom of the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and sliced apples are soft. ...What is it to be American? America. The land of the free, home of the brave. Live for apple pie and baseball! We sure do know how to appeal to the masses, right? Come live here and you’ll have so many freedoms and rights. But wait, you’re not a man? Hm, your chances for success are a little less. Oh, and your gay? Don’t plan to marry your partner, unless you move to only 5 of the 50 states that allow it. Oh wow, and you’re not white? Sorry, you may not find too many lucrative opportunities here. America is quite the facade. We are so fast faced and rely on Starbucks and energy drinks to get us through the day. We fool ourselves into thinking we are healthy just because we ate something “low-fat’. When we look in the mirror, we “really haven’t gained that much weight”. Our society teaches us ways to make excuses. “I haven’t had my coffee yet.” “There was traffic.” “My kids got up late.” “The dog ate my homework.” It’s always someone else’s fault; the responsibility is never on the individual. We lie to ourselves and others to make our lives seem so ey need to be and only growing… right along with our waistlines. We place restrictions on alcohol and marijuana, but not on fat content. If we took a moment to really evaluate the reasons we are so fat, then maybe we wouldn’t hold the title of fattest country. It really isn’t a noble honor. There are so many statistics and studies that have been done on this subject, but we’re not doing anything with it. Sure, there are places trying...

...“Where can I find the Murval tote bags and pumpkin spice potpourri?” It’s a question not often asked of a 17 year old male and, certainly, one I never thought I would be asked. That is, until I became a member of the green apron-wearing sales team at Sample House & Candle Shop, a local gift shop in my hometown. Offering soothing music and aromas that change with the seasons, we sell a potpourri of potpourri; everything from scented candles and soaps to fudgy-brownie mix in a jar and quirky cocktail napkins with quotes that our customers, typically women who could be my mother or grandmother, find laugh-out-loud funny. Similarly, my coworkers are all women. At first, given our obvious gender and generational differences, there was...

...‘Secrets’ and ‘The Taste of Watermelon’ are two short stories that are worth comparing. The two stories have many things that are similar when seen from faraway but have points that differ from each other when looked closely. One main thing they both have in common are that they are both stories which an incident completely changes the relationships with an elder. The different things are that how the main character reacts to the action he does and how he thinks of it at the end. Between the two stories, the relationship with the elder is something that differs from each other. In ‘Secrets’ the main character is very close and familiar to the elder, in this story it is referred as ‘Great Aunt Mary’. There is one scene that significantly shows this; Her grandmother had given it to her as a brooch and she had had a ring made from it. He would try to count back to see how old it was. Had her grandmother got it from HER grandmother? And if so what had she turned it into? This shows the main character’s interest towards the aunt and a want to know even know about his mysterious aunt. After breaking promises with the aunt and reading the letter though, the main character and the elder’s relationship breaks and is never made up, or nobody tried to make it up. The main character regrets of his action, it is shown by him not saying anything to the insults the elder tells him, for example telling him that ‘you are dirt’. However, even though the elder ‘struck him across the side...

...Kyimari Reeves Food & Culture Dr. Daryl White December 12, 2014 My Family’s Culinary History: A Multigenerational History and Autoethnography When you think of or smell a certain food, what comes to mind? On one hand, the sight or smell of that food might trigger hunger, or even a memory of the last time you shared that meal with a loved one. The smell or sights of our favorite foods trigger a different thoughts or feelings in each of us. This is an example of Semiotics. Semiotics is defined as "anything that can stand for something else." Roland Barthes was one of Europe's most renowned theorists of semiology. Barthes believed that in order to generate a complete sign, there were two parts that have to work together. These two parts are known as the signifier and the signified. A good example of this is the favorite food we thought of earlier, it would act as a signifier, and the thought that came to your head when thinking of this food would act as the signified. For some, that equates food memories. My family and I have created many food memories for us as well as followed the foodways crafted for us by previous generations. Coming from a rather diverse ethnic background, we have different variations of traditional African American foods. I have many memories of family reunions and all the interesting dishes my relatives would prepare. But when it came to certain meals my mother was very traditional in preparing it, and it had to be done a certain way or it...
