As part of Apple’s product launch they decided to partner with AT&T as the exclusive provider for the iPhone. This partnership required customers to sign a two-year commitment on top of paying at least $499 for the phone. After the introductory phase Apple decided to reduce the phone price by $100 which was not well received by the existing customer base and which created a dilemma with how to react as blogs, phone calls and emails were generating negative publicity. Steve Jobs decided to issue the same rebate to current customers, but they were still left with the dilemma of how to deal with customers being who were unhappy that they can only get service through AT&T (Solomn, Marshall, and Stewart, 2012). In fact, some customers have detailed plans on the internet on how one can modify the phone so that other service providers can be used versus AT&T. The important factors in understanding the decision is not only the domestic laws, but international laws as this will feed directly into the market development strategies when the iPhone is launched globally. By gaining an understanding of this Apple can define the boundaries in which they can build their strategies.
